  • Descriptions and Records of Oriental and Papuan Solitary Vespidae (Hym.)
DESCRIPTIONS AND RECORDS OF ORIENTAL AND PAPUAN SOLITARY VESPIDAE (HYM.). By Dr. J. VAN DER VECHT (Buitenzorg, Java). During my leave in Europe in 1933-34, I had an opportunity to examine the types of various Oriental and Australian Vespidae in the British Museum al London, the University Museum at Oxford, and the Museums at Leiden and Amsterdam. As is well known among the studente of Hymenoptera, our knowledge of the representatives of the order in this part of the world is still Very incomplete. This may be partly due to the fact that many of the species are loral or rare, but the study is especially complicated by the inadequate work of some of the previous authors, viz. F. Smith and P. Cameron, whose descriptions are as a rule so short or inexact, that it is often impossible to recognize their species from the descriptions alone. Most of the types of these authors have never been redescribed and I was thercfore very glad to have the opportunity of studying these valuable insects. In the present paper I have accepted the generic definitions as given by J. Bequaert in his excellent paper on the Vespidae of the Belgian Congo (Buil. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist. XXXIX, 1918, pp. 1-384). This includes the suppression of Rygckium as a separate genus and the acceptance of Pachymenes and Anrixtrocerus as distinct genera. In Pachymenes are brought together a few species in which the shape of the abdomen is intermediate between that of Eumcnes and of Odynerus; their first abdominal tergite has no tracé of a transverse carina.

The multi-celled mud nests were constructed on the interior walls of abandoned houses in dry and shaded places. Nests were composed of 1 to 4 layers with cens constructed in tw o paralle! series. The number of censper nest ranged from 3 to 62. Cells containing prey (larvae ofLepidoptera) numbered fram 4 to 29. B. dyscherus is a uniyoltíne species. Adults emerge from September to December, and nesting talces place at the beginning of the following year; however, the developmental period for some immatures with proloFlged diapause l3.Sted up to 596 days. The total duration of immature stages n nests collected in 1996 was less for males than for females. The sex ratio for the total populatíon was 1.5 males: 1 female with males emerging earher than females. Alife table was constructed, and details of lhe life cycle of the wasps and parasitoids are presented.

Beitr. 42/1 95-315 31.7.2010 A Catalogue of the Eumeninae (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) of the Ethiopian Region excluding Malagasy Subregion. Part II: Genera Delta de SAUSSURE 1885 to Zethus FABRICIUS 1804 and Species Incertae Sedis J.M. CARPENTER, J. GUSENLEITNER & M. MADL A b s t r a c t : The genera in alphabetical order from Delta de SAUSSURE 1885 to Zethus FABRICIUS 1804 and species incertae sedis are catalogued. Several taxonomic changes are proposed. K e y w o r d s : Vespidae, Eumeninae, Ethiopian Region, catalogue, taxonomy. Introduction This is the second part of a catalogue of the Eumeninae of the Ethiopian Region excluding Malagasy Subregion. The first part was published by CARPENTER et al. (2009) consisting of the genera in alphabetical order from Aethiopicodynerus GUSENLEITNER 1997 to Cyrtolabulus van der VECHT 1969, as well as a key to the genera. That paper should also be consulted for explanation of conventions we have followed. This second part deals with all the remaining genera and the species incertae sedis and thus brings the alphabetical catalogue to an end. As CARPENTER & MADL (2009: Linzer biologische Beiträge 41 (2): 1871-1935) recently published a catalogue of the Vespidae of the Malagasy Subregion, the Eumeninae of the whole Ethiopian Region have now been treated. The third part will include additions, corrections, an index and a systematic review. At least eight of the 26 genera are apparently nonmonophyletic: Zethus, Montezumia, Euodynerus, Odynerus, Pterocheilus, Stenodynerus, Leptochilus and Microdynerus. A key to the nearctic genera accompanies the text. Downloaded By: [American Museum of Natural History] At: 18:07 31 October 2007 Introduction The Eumeninae is the primary lineage of the Vespidae.

  • Vol. XVI, No. 2, May, 1957 269 Checklist of the Hymenoptera of Fiji
Vol. XVI, No. 2, May, 1957 269 Checklist of the Hymenoptera of Fiji D. T. FULLAWAY BOARD OF AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY HONOLULU, HAWAII {Presented at the meeting of December 10, 1956) It is unfortunate, in the writer's opinion, that a detailed and comprehensive study of the insect fauna of the Fiji Islands, similar to the one made by Buxton and Hopkins in Samoa or that of Perkins in Hawaii, has never been made, for it is realized that our knowledge of the Fijian insects up to the present is only fragmentary. Turner, in his report on the collections sent to the British Museum by Veitch, calls attention to this need, stating: "It is important that the fauna should be studied before it becomes too much changed by the ravages of cultivation and the competition of imported forms." The report by Mann of Harvard on the collection of ants made as early as 1917 also comments on the disappearance of the indigenous fauna in most sections where the native forest has been destroyed. My interest has been aroused by obtaining for study the Hymenoptera in the collections of Noel Krauss along with those of Bryan, Zimmerman, Muir, Lever, and others (unfortunately, many of the specimens could not be determined beyond genus status), and in working over these collections for the Bishop Museum I found it desirable to compile a list of the described and recorded species. This list is presented herewith. I have been to considerable pains to make it as complete as possible but I daresay omissions will be noticed.

  • Sphecos: a Forum for Aculeate Wasp Researchers
SPHECOS Number 6 - November 1982 A Newsletter for Aculeate Wasp Researchers Arnold S. Menke, editor Systematic Entomology Laboratory, USDA, ARS c/o U. S. National Museum of Natural History Washington DC 20560 Notes from the Editor This issue contains a lot of research news, quite a few travel reports, two obituaries, information on the Oxford Museum Collection, and a variety of other material. Please keep sending me reports of your activities for inclusion in the next issue or else Sphecos will gradually diminish in size. There will be a gathering of hymenopterists from all over North America at the Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America at Toronto, Canada, this December. The purpose of this meeting is to establish a society and journal for hymenopterists. Your editor will attend; a summary of the meeting will appear in the next issue of Sphecos. In the last issue I listed the names of approximately 100 people who had not returned the Sphecos questionnaire, noting that they had been dropped from the active mailing list as a result. The response to this list was underwhelming - only a handful of people listed sent in the questionnaire - so my task of putting issues in envelopes and afixing mailing labels has been reduced by quite a bit. I would like to thank Vivian Spriggs for typing most of this issue of Sphecos. Research News/Help Needed 0. W. Richards (89 ST. Stephen's Road, Ealing, London Wl3 8JA), has four papers in preparation dealing with the following: vespid larvae, Arabian Masaridae, Arabian Vespidae, and corrections and additions to his "Social Wasps of the Americas".
