  • Checklist of the Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) of British Columbia
Checklist of the Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) of British Columbia Scott Russell Spencer Entomological Collection Beaty Biodiversity Museum, UBC Vancouver, B.C. The family Pompilidae is a cosmopolitan group of some 5000 species of wasps which prey almost exclusively on spiders, giving rise to their common name - the spider wasps. While morphologically monotonous (Evans 1951b), these species range in size from a few millimetres long to among the largest of all hymenopterans; genus Pepsis, the tarantula hawks may reach up to 64 mm long in some tropical species (Vardy 2000). B.C.'s largest pompilid, Calopompilus pyrrhomelas, reaches a more modest body length of 19 mm among specimens held in our collection. In North America, pompilids are known primarily from hot, arid areas, although some species are known from the Yukon Territories and at least one species can overwinter above the snowline in the Colorado mountains (Evans 1997). In most species, the females hunt, attack, and paralyse spiders before laying one egg on (or more rarely, inside) the spider. Prey preferences in Pompilidae are generally based on size, but some groups are known to specialize, such as genus Ageniella on jumping spiders (Araneae: Salticidae) and Tachypompilus on wolf spiders (Araneae: Lycosidae) (Evans 1953). The paralysed host is then deposited in a burrow, which may have been appropriated from the spider, but is typically prepared before hunting from existing structures such as natural crevices, beetle tunnels, or cells belonging to other solitary wasps. While most pompilids follow this general pattern of behaviour, in the Nearctic region wasps of the genus Evagetes and the subfamily Ceropalinae exhibit cleptoparasitism (Evans 1953).

  • Evolution of the Suctorial Proboscis in Pollen Wasps (Masarinae, Vespidae)
Arthropod Structure & Development 31 (2002) 103–120 www.elsevier.com/locate/asd Evolution of the suctorial proboscis in pollen wasps (Masarinae, Vespidae) Harald W. Entomologie, Rosenstein 1, D-70191 Stuttgart, Germany Received 7 May 2002; accepted 17 July 2002 Abstract The morphology and functional anatomy of the mouthparts of pollen wasps (Masarinae, Hymenoptera) are examined by dissection, light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, supplemented by field observations of flower visiting behavior. This paper focuses on the evolution of the long suctorial proboscis in pollen wasps, which is formed by the glossa, in context with nectar feeding from narrow and deep corolla of flowers. Morphological innovations are described for flower visiting insects, in particular for Masarinae, that are crucial for the production of a long proboscis such as the formation of a closed, air-tight food tube, specializations in the apical intake region, modification of the basal articulation of the glossa, and novel means of retraction, extension and storage of the elongated parts. A cladistic analysis provides a framework to reconstruct the general pathways of proboscis evolution in pollen wasps. The elongation of the proboscis in context with nectar and pollen feeding is discussed for aculeate Hymenoptera. q 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved. We thank all of you. The bulk of the text was compiled by Sam Droege at the USGS Native Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab over several years from 2004-2008. We regularly update the manual with new information, so, if you have a new technique, some additional ideas for sections, corrections or additions, we would like to hear from you. Please email those to Sam Droege ([email protected]). You can also email Sam if you are interested in joining the group’s discussion group on bee monitoring and identification. Many thanks to Dave and Janice Green, Tracy Zarrillo, and Liz Sellers for their many hours of editing this manual. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Nidificação, mortalidade, parasitismo, Trypoxylon lactitarse, Auplopus militaris ABSTRACT - Temporal variation of solitary wasps and bees, nesting frequency, mortality, and parasitism were recorded from a remanent forest in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil.

  • Descriptions and Records of Oriental and Papuan Solitary Vespidae (Hym.)
DESCRIPTIONS AND RECORDS OF ORIENTAL AND PAPUAN SOLITARY VESPIDAE (HYM.). By Dr. J. VAN DER VECHT (Buitenzorg, Java). During my leave in Europe in 1933-34, I had an opportunity to examine the types of various Oriental and Australian Vespidae in the British Museum al London, the University Museum at Oxford, and the Museums at Leiden and Amsterdam. As is well known among the studente of Hymenoptera, our knowledge of the representatives of the order in this part of the world is still Very incomplete. This may be partly due to the fact that many of the species are loral or rare, but the study is especially complicated by the inadequate work of some of the previous authors, viz. F. Smith and P. Cameron, whose descriptions are as a rule so short or inexact, that it is often impossible to recognize their species from the descriptions alone. Most of the types of these authors have never been redescribed and I was thercfore very glad to have the opportunity of studying these valuable insects. In the present paper I have accepted the generic definitions as given by J. Bequaert in his excellent paper on the Vespidae of the Belgian Congo (Buil. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist. XXXIX, 1918, pp. 1-384). This includes the suppression of Rygckium as a separate genus and the acceptance of Pachymenes and Anrixtrocerus as distinct genera. In Pachymenes are brought together a few species in which the shape of the abdomen is intermediate between that of Eumcnes and of Odynerus; their first abdominal tergite has no tracé of a transverse carina.
