Nest boxes are sheltered bundles of hollow plant stems, bamboo or reeds, and holes drilled into wood or cavities made of other materials such as glass or polystyrene. -

JAQUES Almost everyone has noticed the round holes nearly a half inch across cut in the leaves of many plants. Rose leaves very frequently show this mutilation. The casual observer is usually without infor mation, however, as to how it all comes about unless he has chanced to see a leafcutter bee providing herself with one of the round oval pieces of leaf she uses in lining a burrow in rotton wood or in hollow plant stems. One must watch quickly and closely if he is to see this performance. -

La primera población, provenía de Xalapa, México, y fue originalmente colectada y criada sobre pupas de la Mosca Mexicana de la Fruta, Anastrepha ludens Loew (Diptera: Tephritidae). La segunda población, originaria de Athens, Georgia, fue colectada y criada sobre prepupas de avispas de barro, Trypoxylon politum Say (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae). Estudios de PCR de la región ITS2 confi rmaron que ambas poblaciones del parasitoide pertenecen a la misma especie; lo que nos provee de un perfi l molecular taxonómico muy útil debído a que las hembras de las diversas especies de Melittobia son superfi cialmente similares. La amplifi cación del gen de superfi cie de proteina (wsp) de Wolbachia confi rmó la presencia de este endosimbionte en ambas poblaciones. -

Three years of pan trap collections from 16 sites yielded a rich assemblage of bees from vacant lots and urban farms, with 98 species documented. We collected a greater bee abundance from vacant lots, and the two forms of greenspace supported significantly different bee communities. Plant–pollinator networks constructed from floral visitation observations revealed that, while the average number of bees utilizing available resources, niche breadth, and niche overlap were similar, the composition of floral resources and common foragers varied by habitat type. Finally, we found that the proportion of impervious surface and number of greenspace patches in the surrounding landscape strongly influenced bee assemblages. At a local scale (100 m radius), patch isolation appeared to limit colonization of vacant lots and urban farms. However, at a larger landscape scale (1000 m radius), increasing urbanization resulted in a greater concentration of bees utilizing vacant lots and urban farms, illustrating that maintaining greenspaces provides important habitat, even within highly developed landscapes. -

Os Hymenoptera foram coletados por meio de ninhos-armadilha dispostos em três tamanhos de área (25, 100 e 400 m2). De fevereiro a novembro de 2004, coletou-se o total de 137 ninhos fundados por 11 espécies de abelhas e vespas. A maioria (75%) foi fundada por vespas. As armadilhas apresentaram picos de ocupação nos meses de março (25%) e setembro (26%). O mês em que ocorreu menor ocupação foi junho (2%). Excetuando-se Trypoxylon (Trypargilum) lactitarse Saussure, não foram observadas correlações significativas entre o número de ninhos ocupados e as médias mensais de temperatura e pluviosidade. O total de 48% dos ninhos apresentou mortalidade de imaturos e 13% deles foram parasitados. As taxas de mortalidade e parasitismo foram diferentes para abelhas e vespas, i.e., ninhos de vespas apresentaram maior mortalidade.
