Tech Talk March Technical 2021 High School PRESENTATION DAY PRINCIPAL Speech day was extremely successful this year and it was the first occasion whereby this ceremony was simultaneously delivered live to our student NEWS body and via social media to our community. I was acutely aware of the far- reaching effect this livestream meant to family, relatives, alumni and friends as we were able to gather and celebrate our student success on a global level. We warmly welcomed back Sam Dando, ex-Deputy Principal, who was responsible for creating the “Sydney Technical High School Wall of Fame” in 2005. Mr Dando delivered a lovely speech about formally celebrating the achievements of our “Old Boys”. Mr Dando’s lovely memoirs of our alumni demonstrated high achievement in many diverse areas including: “inventors, surgeons, medical specialists, musicians, artists, dancers, architects, academics, administrators, economists, businessmen, educators, writers, politicians, engineers, media producers and personalities, sportsmen, Steven So sports administrators, and military Principal commanders”. This is a wonderful testament to the diverse success of our Alumni which is underpinned by the strong educational foundations provided at Sydney Technical High School. L-R: Jerry Mouzakis, Daniel Nemani (School I would like to thank the large team of Captain) and Sam Dando staff and students who made this event possible and acknowledge the never ending support of the Parents and Citizens Committee. I would like to publicly thank Trevor Trotman, Cheryl Feigen, Shane Gamage and Julie Ryan for their outstanding contributions in making the day exceptional. More photos of Presentation Day will be in the next edition of Tech Talk.

Letters will be sent home to inform parents of students who are causing concern due to their lack of preparation and progress. INTERIM REPORTS For several years now, STHS has provided the students and parents of Year 7 with an interim report at the end of Term 1. While this is not a comprehensive record of student achievement like that of the Semester Report which will follow at the end of Term 2, the interim report gives parents an indication of the progress their son has made, in his transition to high school, in terms of his organisation, attendance, socialisation and engagement. A similar process also takes place for Year 11 as they will have interim reports completed by their teachers and provided to their parents indicating how they have commenced in their first term in the senior school. The Year 11 interim Alison Preachey report will communicate a student’s dedication to their studies, organisation, Deputy Principal attendance and appropriateness of the subject selection. The Year 11 interim report acknowledges the steep learning curve some students experience in their first term of the Preliminary HSC and how communication between school and home can support student achievement and wellbeing. These will be sent home to families at the end of this month. SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS School Photographs will be taken for Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 on Tuesday 23 March in the auditorium. The founder of The Big Brother Scholarship, Mr Ananthan Ambikairajah, is an alumnus of Sydney Technical High School. Ananthan is a neuroscientist, educator and science communicator who has taught in both high school and university environments. He has had extensive experience in mentoring, motivating and engaging students. This led to the conceptualisation of The Big Brother Scholarship, which has been running since 2018. The goal of The Big Brother Scholarship is to provide support for a student who is in need of some form of mentorship in their lives. This support will include a $500 stipend, in addition to monthly mentoring sessions, to help students with either their personal or professional lives. These monthly mentoring sessions will broadly be focused around goal setting activities, in addition to developing the skills to establish a strong professional and/or personal network so that students can achieve their goals. Further information and application form: https://ananthanambikairajah.com/#thebigbrotherscholarship Applications close: 5pm, 15 April 2021 Note: The Big Brother Scholarship is not an initiative of Sydney Technical HS. It has been designed, maintained and led by Mr Ananthan Ambikairajah.

A shade sail in this area, therefore, is a very important requirement for protection from the elements. In early 2020 we experienced a ferocious storm that damaged these shade sails beyond repair. Luckily mid-2020, our wonderful P&C applied for a NSW Government Community Building Program grant to replace our shade sails and were successful. Chris Minns MP advised us late last year that we were now able to replace our shade sails and we arranged their installation in February. Mr Minns MP visited the school on Friday 19 February and it was a great opportunity to challenge him to a table tennis duel. Page 10 March 2021 Tech Talk How do I research for assignments/assessments? It is important for our boys to enter high school understanding that they need to use more sophisticated research methods than just looking up a topic on Wikipedia. All of our students are encouraged to join the NSW State Library for free online access to thousands of ebooks, academic journals, archives, maps and magazines. Our seniors especially need to be using these resources for projects, research assignments and further reading on topics discussed in classes. The next step is ensuring that students can spot reliable, credible and factual articles and tell the difference from "fake news" and questionable, biased sources. We teach students about the CRAAP method - Is the articlecredible /true? Is it from a reliable source who is an authority on the subject? Is the information timely and still accurate? What is the purpose of the article - to inform or to persuade? Answering these questions can help students to clarify and understand which articles to use as sources for their academic research.

TERM 1 BOOK CLUB Our student-run book club meets on Monday 22 March at 1:20pm. All ages are welcome to join this club who meet to discuss popular and thought-provoking Young Adult books of a variety of genres while they eat their lunch in the library. PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE (PRC) 2021 The PRC is usually open to students from Years 3-9 - however in 2021 it has been extended to Year 10 to enable past participants who were unable to get a medal last year due to the effect of Covid-19 to have another chance. The PRC is not a competition between students but a challenge that each student sets to read 20 books within a year. Books read must be from a reading list on the PRC site but students are allowed a few of their own choice. Reading logs open in March but students can include anything they’ve read since 2020’s PRC closed on August 30 of last year. Get reading!

This is an excerpt of the speech to honour Sam Dando. “Every year 150 boys leave Sydney Tech and go on to achieve greatness in their adult lives. The reach and possibilities afforded to Sydney Tech alumni are immeasurable with ex-students reaching the pinnacle in their respective fields, both locally and globally. Some examples of these achievements are Adam, who is working at Oxford developing a COVID vaccine, Nick, who is now a partner at a law firm in the CBD… To Richard, whose Tech startup now has a net value of billions of dollars, or Imants who represented Australia at the Venice biennale, even though, early in his career to appease his parents he enrolled in Architecture at Sydney University and finished with a university medal. But how will current students know and be inspired by these exploits? How can we showcase the great deeds and achievements of our alumni? Stroll around the corridor. Read their stories and dream big. Today we honour and thank Sam Dando” Jerry Mouzakis Rel Careers Adviser

With four wickets for seven runs from four overs, Jalaj’s pacey inswingers caused all sorts of trouble for the valiant South Sydney team. Despite Jalaj’s impressive bowling, South Sydney’s captain proved impossible to dislodge and he finished South Sydney’s innings not out on 149 runs. Vibhu Karthikayan also bowled well with his crafty off-breaks proving largely unplayable for two consecutive maiden overs. Roshan Bhat lived up to his name, top scoring for Tech with 71 runs before lofting an easy catch to the covers. Minol Jayawardana contributed strongly with 47 runs before an attempted slog over cow corner resulted in his stumps being obliterated. Nevertheless, Tech still managed to win comfortably with six wickets and fourteen overs to spare. The team is looking forward to their next challenge against Caringbah High School Roshan Bhat and Lalit Sahni sometime in the next few weeks.
