Agnes Borsody Scholarship 2021 INFORMATION SHEET AGNES BORSODY SCHOLARSHIP The Public Education Foundation’s Agnes Borsody Scholarship provides financial assistance to refugee or immigrant girls, or daughters or granddaughters of refugees or immigrants, in need attending NSW selective/specialist schools and schools with selective streams. The scholarship was established in 2017 in memory of Agnes Borsody. Agnes arrived in Australia as a refugee in 1957 and attended North Sydney Girls High School. Agnes gained degrees in psychology and law, before embarking on a successful career sitting on legal tribunals in NSW and Victoria, including the Social Security Appeals Tribunal, Veterans’ Review Board and the Refugee Review Tribunal. The Agnes Borsody scholarship was designed to assist students in financial need who may otherwise not have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Up to 5 scholarships are available for eligible female students enrolled in Years 8-11 in 2021 at a NSW public selective high school, a NSW public specialist high school, or the selective stream of a NSW partially selective high school. (see basic eligibility criteria section for complete list of eligible schools). Each scholarship consists of a bursary of $2,000 per year for two years (total $4,000) and is to support the students studies whilst enrolled in the broader selective/specialist school setting. The scholarship is to cover educational expenses such as: . Laptop, iPad or similar device . Subject or study related software, printer, stationary and textbooks . Uniforms and equipment . Excursions and camps . Curricular and extra-curricular learning opportunities . Furniture for study such as desk, chair, lamp etc . Home wifi for study . Face-To-Face Tutoring or Online Tutoring If a student leaves a selective or specialist public high school before completion of the scholarship period, the scholarship will lapse. Any unspent monies at the end of the scholarship period must be refunded to the Public Education Foundation scholarship fund. The selection panel will include representatives of the Public Education Foundation and independent experts. After considering all applications, the selection panel will recommend the selected applicants for the approval of the Public Education Foundation’s Board. The successful applicant will be notified in December 2020. Applicants will be notified of the outcome via email. If successful, the scholarship recipient’s school principal will also receive notification directly. HOW TO APPLY To apply for the Agnes Borsody Scholarship, students can access the link to the online portal via the Foundation’s website - http://www.publiceducationfoundation.org.au/scholarships Please note that all applications are now received via the Foundation’s online portal. You will need to sign up for a FluidReview account to access the form. Prior to starting your application, you should compile the following information ready to submit: Applicant details including: o full name o gender o date of birth o phone number o address o email (please ensure you nominate an email account you regularly access) Residence status (copy of residency Visa or Citizenship certificate is a requirement) When you came to Australia (if applicable) Number of years in formal education before coming to Australia (if applicable) Parent/guardian details (at least one but up to two) o name o phone number o relationship to student o email address School details: o name of school o address o principal name o email School Point of Contact – the person at the school who you would like correspondence sent to – name, phone number and email 3 | Page Agnes Borsody Scholarships Basic information about you / your family: o whether you are Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, or Pacific or South Sea Islander o who is the primary caregiver at home o highest education qualification of your immediate family o if you are from a Non-English-Speaking Background o country of origin of your parents and yourself o which languages you speak and are spoken at home o if you have a diagnosed disability or learning difficulty o whether you have been in out-of-home care o socio-economic background o how you found out about the scholarship A statement outlining why you are a suitable candidate for this scholarship and how you meet each of the selection criteria. (Maximum 400 words) A brief outline of your plans after you have completed your HSC (maximum 150 words) Briefly outline how you feel you meet the criteria in relation to financial need/disadvantage (maximum 150 words) A copy of all pages of your most recent school report ready to upload A personal reference from someone who knows you. It could be a teacher, coach, family friend or an employer. (PDF or Word format, maximum 400 words) A supporting statement from your Principal which addresses the selection criteria (the applicant must initiate a request via the online application to the Principal. This will result in an email being sent to the Principal asking them to complete a statement of support online) Note for Principals: Please be aware that your statement is a critical component of the application form and your feedback is given considerable weight in the process of panel deliberations. The panels are looking for feedback that goes well beyond simple confirmation that the student is enrolled in your school. SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION Once you have finalised your application and all elements are complete (including references and supporting statements as required) you can submit it for review.     FEBRUARY 2016 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Taking every opportunity that comes your way It has been a great start to the term and already I can see many students taking the big steps to grow their potential. Every experience, every success, every failure builds our ability to grow. Action fuels fulfilment, unpacks experiences and provides colour and texture to our lives. I challenge all students to set a goal of refining and improving one area of their subjects every week. Striving for your best will inspire others! Schools are places that successfully manage a huge number of individual students…1100 in fact here! We endeavour to build self‐regulation in students and the skills it takes to work cooperatively in the real world that is defined by boundaries and rules. Work Health and Safety is a modern boundary to protect all people at work and school. Thank you to the vast majority of parents who have supported our shoe policy. We are very grateful. As a school we have set our standard and you have ensured that your child understands the need to have the correct footwear.
