  • PRESERVATION JAZZ SOCIETY a Short History
PRESERVATION JAZZ SOCIETY ---1989 to Present The Preservation Jazz Society or PJS for short was founded by Brecon Jazz Festival favourites the Adamant New Orleans Marching Band and about a dozen of their friends in 1989. The object to promote Traditional New Orleans Jazz music in a six piece band ensemble in a club atmosphere. Starting at the Bottleneck Bar at the Philharmonic Pub in Cardiff with little money and after a quiet start we built up a solid audience with live traditional jazz bands each Tuesday evening. Journalist and Novelist Eric Reynolds was given the job of publicity and booking bands up to three months in advance to create a programme structure that be could be publicised well before the gigs took place . We started a newsletter ‘The Footappers News’ that’s still published today. One of the revenue raising problems at the time was that we could not charge an entrance fee to the music room at the pub, the only income available was raffle tickets plus a donation from the Pub. Thanks to Dai Richards, a Cardiff City Council Counsellor at the time with a brief for promoting the Arts and an Artist himself, the PJS were given a helpful grant each year for as long a Dia had a say in things or at least until the Council changed-which it did after several years. None the less without Dia’s help things would been a difficult. The grant put the society on a sound financial footing and enabled a great range of bands from further afield to play at our gigs.

  • Cold Comfort and Home Truths: Informing the Review of Jazz in England ______Foreword and Summary by John Fordham
Cold Comfort and Home Truths: Informing the review of jazz in England _________________________________________________________________________________________ Foreword and Summary by John Fordham The American-born art of jazz has been a vivid presence in English music for over 90 years - taking root in the country’s culture within a decade of the first jazz recordings being released in New York in 1917, and fascinating successive generations of players and fans ever since with variations on the original models that have told increasingly distinctive local stories. But the focus of this report is not a comprehensive history of jazz music’s evolution in England, intriguing though it has been. Our objectives are practical and contemporary - to enable the English jazz constituency to use its jazz-supporting resources as effectively as possible, and to help facilitate the promotion of all forms “Jazz has shown of jazz, and further its development. This report thus extraordinary surveys an English jazz community, currently in excellent creative fettle amidst severe economic powers of survival hardship, from the starting point of two key questions: and self-renewal “Where are we now? And where do we want to be?” inside a society not The parameters of ‘Cold Comfort and Home Truths’ begin where the fairly healthy economics and self- designed for it.” sustaining fusion of jazz and pre-rock commercial and dance styles left off over 60 years ago. Jazz, which Eric Hobsbawm dominated the sounds of mass-entertainment in the first ‘Uncommon People’ half of the 20th century, moved aside for Elvis Presley and The Beatles, and thus closer to art-music - with its enthusiastic but inevitably smaller audiences, and the concomitant necessity for investment and support beyond the means of box-offices or record shops alone.

Such coverage was monitored for a two month period at the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008. The principal conclusion of the report is that, despite the growth of interest in jazz, as evidenced by increases in festival and club audiences, the music is still treated as inferior to classical music in the press and on the air. Previews and reviews of jazz in the press and on radio and television are strongly London- centric.

This makes it something of a veteran for a festival, but in human years, it’s an age with the future all still ahead. Our title of ‘The Spirit of the Festival’ refers to a history. Everyone who knows and loves Brecon Jazz will understand that it is t his e ssenc e of the festival, its ups and downs of music and ‘clouds’, their meanings and memories, which endures. Brecon Jazz is a unique and creative expression of a particular genre of music, but in the involvement of so many in the community, of musicians and stakeholders, it is a ‘magic’ widely shared and experienced across the whole town. We have worked to sustain this spirit, specifically from 2016 to the present, with the support in particular of the Town Council, its previous and current Mayors. Our thanks go to them, to the amazing, loyal audience, supporters, funders, teams, suppliers, volunteers – and of course the musicians.
