One of the company's stated aims at its inception was to 'establish [Glasgow] as a major European jazz centre' (Williams, 1986b). Through a single, historical case study, the thesis attempts first to ascertain the extent to which this aim has been achieved, and second to determine the enabling and limiting factors acting upon the Festival in its attempts to effect change in its host city. The thesis finds that urban music festivals can, under the right circumstances, contribute to positive and lasting changes to the environment in which they exist. In the case of Glasgow Jazz Festival, this is evident in terms of both the physical infrastructure and educational opportunities which would be unlikely to exist today had the Festival not been their champion. A festival's ability to effect such change, however, can be severely curtailed by fluctuating levels of commitment from local and national authorities. 2 Contents List of Figures Of course, attempting to pinpoint an exact date would be a futile endeavour but nevertheless, what is clear is that jazz has evolved at a remarkable rate during its relatively short lifespan. This evolution, which encompassed many stylistic changes and innovations, was aided in no small part by the rapid technological advances of the twentieth century. Thus, what was initially a relatively localised music has been transformed into a truly global art form. Within a few short decades of the birth of the music, records, radio broadcasts and globe-trotting American jazz performers had already spread the music to a listening audience worldwide, and it was not long after this that musicians began to make attempts to ‘adapt jazz to the social circumstances and musical standards with which they were more familiar’.1 In the intervening decades, subsequent generations of indigenous musicians have formed national lineages that run parallel to those in America, and variations in cultural and social conditions have resulted in a diverse range of performance practices, all of which today fall under the broad heading of jazz. As a result, contemporary musicians and scholars alike are faced with increasing considerations of ownership and authenticity, ultimately being compelled to question whether the term jazz is still applicable to forms of music making that have grown so far away from their historical and geographic origins.

Though typically thought of as two distinct styles, both share common influences and stylistic characteristics. This thesis examines the emergence of both genres, identifies stylistic traits and influences, and analyzes the artistic output of eight different groups: Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis’s electric ensembles, Tony Williams Lifetime, Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, and Soft Machine. Through qualitative listenings of each group’s musical output, comparisons between genres or groups focus on instances of one genre crossing over into the other. Combined with historical conditions, it can perpetuate existing inequality through residential sorting. This dissertation contributes to the literature in residential sorting and hedonic valuation to understand how preference heterogeneity affects location decisions and social welfare. In chapter 2, I estimate the hedonic prices of particulate matter and nitrogen oxide using panel data from Glasgow, Scotland under a variety of functional form assumptions. I find that housing prices are the most elastic with respect to PM2:5 and the least elastic with respect to NOx. The hedonic price for all pollutants decreased from 2001 to 2011. At the median pollutant level, housing price elasticity of PM2:5, PM10, and NOx are -0.2 to -0.46, -0.17 to -0.48, and -0.05 to -0.3 respectively.

The making of the British Jazz Avant-Garde: 1968-1973 Introduction: Making British Jazz ... and Race In 1968 the Arts Council of Great Britain (ACGB), the quasi-governmental agency responsible for providing public support for the arts, formed its first ‘Jazz Sub-Committee’. Its main business was to allocate bursaries usually consisting of no more than a few hundred pounds to jazz composers and musicians. The principal stipulation was that awards be used to develop creative activity that might not otherwise attract commercial support. Bassist, composer and bandleader Graham Collier was the first recipient – he received £500 to support his work on what became the Workpoints composition. In the early years of the scheme, further beneficiaries included Ian Carr, Mike Gibbs, Tony Oxley, Keith Tippett, Mike Taylor, Evan Parker and Mike Westbrook – all prominent members of what was seen as a new, emergent and distinctively British avant-garde jazz scene. Our point of departure in this chapter is that what might otherwise be regarded as a bureaucratic footnote in the annals of the ACGB was actually a crucial moment in the history of British jazz.

We started a newsletter ‘The Footappers News’ that’s still published today. One of the revenue raising problems at the time was that we could not charge an entrance fee to the music room at the pub, the only income available was raffle tickets plus a donation from the Pub. Thanks to Dai Richards, a Cardiff City Council Counsellor at the time with a brief for promoting the Arts and an Artist himself, the PJS were given a helpful grant each year for as long a Dia had a say in things or at least until the Council changed-which it did after several years. None the less without Dia’s help things would been a difficult. The grant put the society on a sound financial footing and enabled a great range of bands from further afield to play at our gigs.
