This Is Our Music V.2-2
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by BCU Open Access 20/11/2015 16:38:00 This Is Our Music?: Tradition, community and musical identity in contemporary British jazz Mike Fletcher As we reach the middle of the second decade of the twenty-first century we are also drawing close to the centenary of jazz as a distinct genre of music. Of course, attempting to pinpoint an exact date would be a futile endeavour but nevertheless, what is clear is that jazz has evolved at a remarkable rate during its relatively short lifespan. This evolution, which encompassed many stylistic changes and innovations, was aided in no small part by the rapid technological advances of the twentieth century. Thus, what was initially a relatively localised music has been transformed into a truly global art form. Within a few short decades of the birth of the music, records, radio broadcasts and globe-trotting American jazz performers had already spread the music to a listening audience worldwide, and it was not long after this that musicians began to make attempts to ‘adapt jazz to the social circumstances and musical standards with which they were more familiar’.1 In the intervening decades, subsequent generations of indigenous musicians have formed national lineages that run parallel to those in America, and variations in cultural and social conditions have resulted in a diverse range of performance practices, all of which today fall under the broad heading of jazz. As a result, contemporary musicians and scholars alike are faced with increasing considerations of ownership and authenticity, ultimately being compelled to question whether the term jazz is still applicable to forms of music making that have grown so far away from their historical and geographic origins. -

A tremendously popular act at home in the UK, where they regularly play large-scale festivals and concert halls (as well as playing the typical club gigs that all musicians play), Sensible Shoes is their first recording to be released outside of the UK. The record will be accompanied by a full UK and European tour throughout the spring and early summer of 2009. Now fun may not be a word you expect to hear in relation to jazz, but it’s the addition of this playfulness that has over years seen Led Bib throw out any preconceptions and play for audiences who don’t consider themselves jazz fans or would not even necessarily know that they like jazz in the least. And would one really expect anything different from a group that originally named itself Lead Bib – which it claimed stood for the shield that dentists use to cover the body and protect their patients when giving them oral x-rays. -
Ingrid Laubrock – Chaos? Fokus! Dienstag, 29.09.2020, 21.00 – 22.00 Uhr, SRF 2 Kultur Samstag, 03.10
Jazz Collection: Ingrid Laubrock – Chaos? Fokus! So entstehen erste Aufnahmen. The Trade and Cooperation Agreement How to Help Musicians
The Trade and Cooperation Agreement – How to help musicians work in the EU after BREXIT 1 Introduction UK music industry generated £2.9 billion in exports in 2019, a 9% increase from £2.7 billion in 2018.1 Most musicians and performers rely on touring and performing in the European Union to make a living. Musicians, and other creative and cultural workers, have specific needs and it is crucial that visa and customs rules post-Brexit take this into account. An inability to maintain these exports due to restrictions on working in the EU will seriously damage Britain’s image and reputation as well. It will also lead to an increase in unemployment and reduce the sector’s contribution to the economy 2 What can you do? 2.1 Urge the Government to add musicians to the list of ‘Independent Professionals’ at the earliest opportunity. 2.2 Ensure the Government negotiates a reciprocal arrangement with the EU that will allow musicians to work freely and unhampered by red tape 2.3 Support the Musicians’ Union call on the Government and Parliament to back a Musicians' Passport for musicians working in the EU post-Brexit. 3 How it is – then and now The actual world of a musician. A note from Stan Sulzmann. Stan has worked as a musician for over 50 years and still teaches at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Stan has worked internationally all his life including the NDR in Hamburg, 10 yrs with James Last, extensive work with commercial music artists and as a BBC representative at European Broadcasting Union, jazz concerts in Molde, Norway and in Stockholm.
