His musical vision and vocabulary reflects his rich geographical heritage. Arun’s Indo-Jazz Group plays original music of South Asian origin with a contemporary jazz attitude, rocking urban beats and the passion of punk. Sweet and timeless melodies give birth to soaring improvisations and raag explorations, driven by a heady mix of dub-reggae bass, tabla trickery and ferocious drum explosions. Arun Ghosh released his debut album “Northern Namaste” on camoci records in 2008 to critical acclaim and the opening track on “Northern Namaste” entitled “Aurora” also appears A charismatic on Gilles Peterson’s compilation album “Brownswood Bubblers Three”. figure with a The band rocked the Southbank Centre at future. their debut gig at the London Jazz Festival The Guardian in November 2007 and has since lit up the British jazz scene with intense and cathartic performances at clubs, festivals and melas in London and around the country. Winners of the BBC Jazz Award 2008 for their debut album “All Is Yes” (Cake/Candid), Get The Blessing are currently one of the UK’s most exciting live bands. Featuring bassist Jim Barr and drummer Clive Deamer from trip-hop legends PORTISHEAD, plus the twin horns & electronics of saxophonist Jake McMurchie and trumpeter Pete Judge, GTB have forged a unique signature sound that defies easy classification, yet never loses sight of thumping tunes, monstrously infectious beats, or joyous collective spontaneity. Their punk attitude towards jazz and their quirky live performances have impressed audiences from Glastonbury the to Jazz Vitoria-Gasteiz and from The Big Chill to The heavyweights Cheltenham Jazz Festival. In fact, one of their tracks was selected for a compilation CD to celebrate the best acts of the that have appeared since The Big Chill’s inception. contemporary Their second album, “Bugs In Amber”, perhaps best described as the post-jazz soundtrack to jazz scene. an imaginary low-budget James The Independent Bond movie remade by Tarkovsky and starring Buster Keaton, also received widespread critical and popular acclaim. Composer, arranger, producer, musical director and saxophonist Jason Yarde writes music that has been described as powerful, spiritual, evocative, rhapsodic, hair-raising and formidable. He composes across variety of styles (progressive jazz, classical, hip-hop fusion, free improvisation, broken beats, R&B, reggae, soul, song writing) and for a variety of media (orchestras, chamber ensembles, Powerful, big band, dance, film, electro-acoustic and midi). His potential and originality is such that he was nominated for the Bird Award at spiritual, the 2004 North Sea Jazz Festival and for the Jazz on 3 Innovation Award for the evocative, 2005 and 2006 BBC Jazz Awards. rhapsodic, In contrast to playing in the big bands of Andrew Hill, McCoy Tyner, Sam Rivers, Hermeto Pascoal, Roy Ayers, Manu Dibango and his own Acoutastic Bombastic... hair-raising and Trio WAH! is a chance to hear Yarde’s playing and compositions in an intimate and stripped down setting. From tight and constantly shifting rhythmic patterns formidable. to free flowing rhapsodic episodes. Trio WAH! can cover the calm and the storm within a few bars never losing the important elements of rhythm, melody and even harmony in this exposed format. The trio features Larry Bartley on Double Bass and Mike Pickering on Drums. ‘My Duo’ with Andrew McCormack showcases a vastly different set of music with lush piano harmony complementing Jason’s saxophone playing. Andrew was the winner the BBC Jazz Award for ‘Rising Star’ in 2006 and his first album with Jason has been incredibly well-received by British jazz critics. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by BCU Open Access 20/11/2015 16:38:00 This Is Our Music?: Tradition, community and musical identity in contemporary British jazz Mike Fletcher As we reach the middle of the second decade of the twenty-first century we are also drawing close to the centenary of jazz as a distinct genre of music. Of course, attempting to pinpoint an exact date would be a futile endeavour but nevertheless, what is clear is that jazz has evolved at a remarkable rate during its relatively short lifespan. This evolution, which encompassed many stylistic changes and innovations, was aided in no small part by the rapid technological advances of the twentieth century. Thus, what was initially a relatively localised music has been transformed into a truly global art form. Within a few short decades of the birth of the music, records, radio broadcasts and globe-trotting American jazz performers had already spread the music to a listening audience worldwide, and it was not long after this that musicians began to make attempts to ‘adapt jazz to the social circumstances and musical standards with which they were more familiar’.1 In the intervening decades, subsequent generations of indigenous musicians have formed national lineages that run parallel to those in America, and variations in cultural and social conditions have resulted in a diverse range of performance practices, all of which today fall under the broad heading of jazz. As a result, contemporary musicians and scholars alike are faced with increasing considerations of ownership and authenticity, ultimately being compelled to question whether the term jazz is still applicable to forms of music making that have grown so far away from their historical and geographic origins.

The record will be accompanied by a full UK and European tour throughout the spring and early summer of 2009. Now fun may not be a word you expect to hear in relation to jazz, but it’s the addition of this playfulness that has over years seen Led Bib throw out any preconceptions and play for audiences who don’t consider themselves jazz fans or would not even necessarily know that they like jazz in the least. And would one really expect anything different from a group that originally named itself Lead Bib – which it claimed stood for the shield that dentists use to cover the body and protect their patients when giving them oral x-rays.

So entstehen erste Aufnahmen. • The Trade and Cooperation Agreement How to Help Musicians
The Trade and Cooperation Agreement – How to help musicians work in the EU after BREXIT 1 Introduction UK music industry generated £2.9 billion in exports in 2019, a 9% increase from £2.7 billion in 2018.1 Most musicians and performers rely on touring and performing in the European Union to make a living. Musicians, and other creative and cultural workers, have specific needs and it is crucial that visa and customs rules post-Brexit take this into account. An inability to maintain these exports due to restrictions on working in the EU will seriously damage Britain’s image and reputation as well. It will also lead to an increase in unemployment and reduce the sector’s contribution to the economy 2 What can you do? 2.1 Urge the Government to add musicians to the list of ‘Independent Professionals’ at the earliest opportunity. 2.2 Ensure the Government negotiates a reciprocal arrangement with the EU that will allow musicians to work freely and unhampered by red tape 2.3 Support the Musicians’ Union call on the Government and Parliament to back a Musicians' Passport for musicians working in the EU post-Brexit. 3 How it is – then and now The actual world of a musician. A note from Stan Sulzmann. Stan has worked as a musician for over 50 years and still teaches at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Stan has worked internationally all his life including the NDR in Hamburg, 10 yrs with James Last, extensive work with commercial music artists and as a BBC representative at European Broadcasting Union, jazz concerts in Molde, Norway and in Stockholm.
