Nel 2006 Asaf iniziò una collaborazione unica con il sassofonista e compositore acclamato Tim Garland, realizzando con lui quattro album: “If The Sea Replied” (The Lighthouse Trio), “Due North” (Northern Underground Orchestra), “The Mystery” (featuring Chick Corea and the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra), and “Libra” (Lighthouse project).). Asaf ha girato tutto il mondo con il progetto Lighthouse: Estremo Oriente, mercoledì 15 settembre 2010 Stati Uniti, Europa, ecc Con la sua band “Inner Noise” Asaf realizzò altri due album, “We Are Falling” (Konnex 2005) e “The Song ore 21.00 Entro” (SAM Productions / Egea 2007), che fu selezionato come uno dei migliori album del 2007 al “All About Jazz” web-site da John Kelman. auditorium “modernissimo” - nembro Mentre lavora sulle proprie composizioni, Asaf forma il “Trio Asaf Sirkis” nel 2007 con il chitarrista greco Tassos Spiliotopoulos e il bassista israeliano Yaron Stavi. Special Feature: Asaf Sirkis And The Road To Shepherd's Stories (2013/04/08) Rainlore on premier drummer/percussionist Asaf Sirkis, his music, and his Asaf Sirkis Trio's latest album, Shepherd's Stories. Edited 2013/04/08 My first encounter with Asaf Sirkis happened, as it The 1990s then already saw Sirkis in great demand, and were, quite unconsciously, about 1993, in the form of getting the kind of press that could be the envy of many, an album by Israeli luminary and 'father' of Israeli free especially at such an early age. He was already jazz (some would say, free improvisation) Harold critically acclaimed as Israel's greatest drummer and Rubin, Trialog, which featured a young Asaf Sirkis on percussionist who ought not be confined to Israel alone drums and Kobi Shefi on bass guitar in addition to but deserving of much wider international recognition. Rubin himself on clarinet. Naturally enough, for a drummer and percussionist of his caliber, Israel eventually proved too small and Sirkis impressed me greatly back then, but, always Europe or America beckoned. having had a bad memory for names, the name Asaf Sirkis somehow soon faded from my memory. The first 1998 finally saw Sirkis leaving for first The class drumming, as well as the album, did not though, Netherlands and then France, before finally settling in and I was of course delighted to be reunited with it last London in 1999. Sirkis very quickly established himself year. It still stands out and is timeless, and I can only as a part of the UK Jazz and world music scene and recommend you get hold of it.

PRESERVATION JAZZ SOCIETY ---1989 to Present The Preservation Jazz Society or PJS for short was founded by Brecon Jazz Festival favourites the Adamant New Orleans Marching Band and about a dozen of their friends in 1989. The object to promote Traditional New Orleans Jazz music in a six piece band ensemble in a club atmosphere. Starting at the Bottleneck Bar at the Philharmonic Pub in Cardiff with little money and after a quiet start we built up a solid audience with live traditional jazz bands each Tuesday evening. Journalist and Novelist Eric Reynolds was given the job of publicity and booking bands up to three months in advance to create a programme structure that be could be publicised well before the gigs took place . We started a newsletter ‘The Footappers News’ that’s still published today. One of the revenue raising problems at the time was that we could not charge an entrance fee to the music room at the pub, the only income available was raffle tickets plus a donation from the Pub. Thanks to Dai Richards, a Cardiff City Council Counsellor at the time with a brief for promoting the Arts and an Artist himself, the PJS were given a helpful grant each year for as long a Dia had a say in things or at least until the Council changed-which it did after several years. None the less without Dia’s help things would been a difficult. The grant put the society on a sound financial footing and enabled a great range of bands from further afield to play at our gigs.

Asaf Sirkis Trio “Shepherd’s Stories” Since settling in London in 1999 Israeli born drummer, percussionist and composer Asaf Sirkis has become one of the most in demand musicians on the UK jazz scene. He first came to prominence as a member of Gilad Atzmon’s Orient House Ensemble before eventually leaving to concentrate on both solo projects and other commitments. Sirkis has toured and recorded with a wide variety of UK based musicians and is currently a member of trios led by pianists John Law and Alex Hutton, guitarist Maciek Pysz and the high profile Lighthouse trio alongside pianist Gwilym Simcock and reeds player Tim Garland. As a leader Sirkis made his bow with The Inner Noise, a trio that explored the sonic possibilities of the church organ within a jazz/rock context, the keyboards being handled by Steve Lodder and with powerful guitarist Mike Outram completing the group. The group’s third (and to date final) album “The Song Within” (2007) represented the zenith of their achievements and is reviewed elsewhere on this site. Since 2008 Sirkis has concentrated on his current trio featuring his compatriot Yaron Stavi on electric bass plus the Greek born guitarist Tassos Spiliotopoulos.

JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL by LEE CAPLAN A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research written under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin and approved by ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Newark, New Jersey May,2017 ©2017 Lee Caplan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL By LEE CAPLAN Thesis Director Dr. Henry Martin Jazz Education in Israel is indebted to three key figures – Zvi Keren, Arnie Lawrence, and Mel Keller. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

Cold Comfort and Home Truths: Informing the review of jazz in England _________________________________________________________________________________________ Foreword and Summary by John Fordham The American-born art of jazz has been a vivid presence in English music for over 90 years - taking root in the country’s culture within a decade of the first jazz recordings being released in New York in 1917, and fascinating successive generations of players and fans ever since with variations on the original models that have told increasingly distinctive local stories. But the focus of this report is not a comprehensive history of jazz music’s evolution in England, intriguing though it has been. Our objectives are practical and contemporary - to enable the English jazz constituency to use its jazz-supporting resources as effectively as possible, and to help facilitate the promotion of all forms “Jazz has shown of jazz, and further its development.
