The adductor pectoral fin muscle in post-spawning females of the white croakerMicropogonias furnieri (Desmarest, 1823) is described from a morphological, histochemical and morphometric perspectives. A description of the morphological characteristics was conducted after dissections in different layers, down to the deep layer. Five muscles were found: superficial, medial, radial and deep adductors, and dorsal arrector. Their fibers were studied after applying histochemical techniques: succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) to reveal mitochondria, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) for glycogen, Sudan black for lipids, myosin adenosinetriphosphatase (mATPase) to reveal the types of fibers, and modified mATPase to evidence the capillaries. Fiber diameters were measured and the number of capillaries was counted. Fiber subtypes named small, medium and large were found within red, pink and white fibers, the latter prevailing. Staining homogeneity was observed in white fibers after alkaline pre-incubations. The number of capillaries decreased from red to white fibers. Due to the prevalence of white fibers, the adductor muscle of the pectoral fins appears to be capable of rapid and discontinuous movements, which are important to body stabilization during subcarangiform swimming. The homogenous staining of white fibers observed in this research corresponds to the post-spawning gonad stage studied. -

PATRICIO OJEDA* Departamento de Ecologfa,'Facultad de Ciencias Biol6gicas, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Casilla 114-D, Santiago, Chile ABSTRACT Structural and functional restrictions hindering the development of efficient mechanism for cropping and ingestion of algal material could constitute an explanatory hypothesis for the observed low diversity of herbivorous fishes. In this study, the cephalic structures of the herbivorous kyphosid fish Girel/a laevifrons (Tschudi 1844) are described, in- cluding a functional analysis of its alimentary apparatus. This species can be characterized by having: (i) a great freedom of movement between the dentary and articular-angular, (ii) a double insertion of the muscle adductor mandibulae A1 in both faces of the maxilla, (iii) specialized teeth, long and flexible with a peculiar articular condyle at their an- terior base, (iv) a mobile articulation between ceratohyal and dorsal hypohyal, and (v) a well developed branchio- stegal system. A mechanism based on a mandibular manipulation associated with a slow suction of a large volume of water is proposed. This mechanism would allow the ingestion of large amounts of algae (as long stripes) in a continuous fashion. The combined activity of both an oral manipulation and buccal suction systems are possible by the existence of a decoupling of the anterior and posterior regions of the buccal cavity involving the jaw and the hyoid arch. -

INTRODUCTION The classification of fishes is not straightforward since they do not form a natural scientific grouping like the other vertebrate classes, i.e. the amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Indeed, fishes can be considered by exclusion to be vertebrates that are not tetrapods (see Chapter 25: Introduction to Vertebrates). They are aquatic, gill- bearing, ectothermic ('cold-blooded') animals with a distinguishable head and, when present, digit-less limbs. Traditionally, fish have been arranged into three groups: ➵ Agnatha 1, the jawless fish (Myxini [hagfishes] and Hyperoartia [lampreys]); ➵ Chondrichthyes, the cartilaginous fish (sharks, skates and rays); ➵ Osteichthyes, the bony fish (Actinopterygii [ray-finned fishes] and Sarcopterygii [lobe-finned fishes]). This classification is adequate for general purposes, although Agnatha is paraphyletic and includes several groups of extinct jawless fishes.
