With 31 per cent of all international students outside of Brisbane, we have a unique opportunity to build diversified and sustainable communities through the growth of international education and training. In partnership with local government, Queensland Government will continue to support the sustainable growth of international education and training in Queensland’s regions. Since launching the Strategy in 2016, the regions have seen: • A total of 54 projects funded with a total of $2.5 million invested in projects which support the regions by enhancing their capability and capacity to grow their local international education and training industry • Partnerships with 10 local governments to enhance student engagement and sustain growth in the regions • Development of regional brand positions for seven destinations in Queensland, helping them to articulate their unique strengths as a study destination • A consistent network to share learnings and enhance knowledge, through the Regional Community of Practice, which meets three times a year • Major events hosted, including our flagship International Education and Training Summit DRAFT- Gold Coast 2017, Cairns 2018 and Townsville 2020

Under the Nurture Imperative, the Queensland Government will assist in delivering and supporting student-centric activities and initiatives which are designed to support, integrate and develop our global students during their time in Queensland, providing them with a meaningful and fruitful study experience. The Queensland Government will endeavour to ensure students who choose Queensland as their second home have access to facilities, support services and programs that facilitate positive experiences and help them build global networks. 3. Enhancing student support and community integration

The student hubs and their related initiatives are focused on providing amenity and basic needs and support, while also creating a central location and a community for engaging student activity. The Queensland Government will continue to facilitate the provision of support relating to other aspects of the student experience, including pre-study assistance and destination welcome information. Digital platforms will be a particular focus in these activities to allow a broad and universal reach. The Queensland Government will also continue to focus on its partnerships with other organisations to broaden the reach of services and ensure positive outcomes for students.

Case Study In just three years the student hub network in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Cairns has seen over 22,000 student visits. These visits play an important role in enhancing the student experience, whether they are fostering supportive social connections, obtaining visa or career advice or taking part in an innovation DRAFTworkshop.

4. Developing skills, incubating innovation and creating connections

Students will have access to a number of activities which will facilitate the development of their 21st century skills, build an innovation mindset and establish connections which support their career goals. These activities will give students the opportunity to push the boundaries of thinking within their fields of studies and their areas of interest. This will allow students to cultivate skills such as critical thinking, communication and creativity, which are all invaluable skills in an employment and entrepreneurship context. Initiatives will focus on complementing the existing employability experiences available to students across Queensland. In partnership with their institutions, the Queensland Government aims to encourage students to uptake those existing experiences to support sustainability of providers and generate strong, localised engagement.

Case Study gen[in] is an internationally-focused innovation challenge that aims to build the entrepreneurial skills and innovation- focused mindset of international and globally minded young people. Teams of students are invited to develop a viable concept and pitch for a start-up, business or public good innovation. In 2018 gen[in] helped 5000 students build their skills and innovation mindset. The activities offer students cross-cutting and state-wide models for engagement, to build on the skills, knowledge, and capabilities they learn at their institutions of study by having real engagement with the employment community. It will also focus on building employer awareness of the talent presented by the international education and training sector in Queensland, by showcasing the alumni talent pool that reaches global markets. The synergies created in this imperative by students and employers will enrich the state in more ways than just financial. This imperative is what will set Queensland apart to prospective international students, as well as the its ability to draw value from the industry.

5. Building employer networks and start-up platforms

A number of Nurture and Launch initiatives will not be possible without building strong, meaningful relationships with employers. As such, the Queensland Government proposes to dedicate resources to building and cultivating these connections. Through utilising its global employer network through the Trade and Investment Queensland Global Network, and its local networks across Queensland, the Queensland Government will provide students with meaningful experiences. The Queensland Government will also play a lead role in raising awareness of the international education and training sector amongst the business community and breaking down myths that hinder student and graduate employment opportunities. This includes business facing events across the regions as well as working closely with an Employer Champions Group to spread the good news about international education and training sector opportunities.

Case Study In 2019 the Study Queensland Talent Program was launched and provides an exciting opportunity to connect Queensland exporters with Queensland’s talented students. The program will provide the students with real-world opportunities and provide businesses with linkages abroad. It will also incorporate a mentoring network which will connect high performing international students with Queensland mentorsDRAFT in a structured program for mutual learning and benefit.

6. Meaningful alumni engagement

Students will have access to programs where they can interact with alumni and become part of a global talent pool of Queensland graduates, which is used around the world by offshore offices. It can also be used locally to help graduates gain employment and expand their professional networks, and ultimately lead to a more meaningful experience and positive outcome. Strong alumni networks will enable students to share their positive experiences with prospective students as well as seek future business opportunities in Queensland to maintain their positive relationships. The focus for generating business opportunities through alumni will include philanthropy, research and development and corporate partnerships. DRAFT
