RESUMO A família Hesperiidae é usualmente referida como um grupo de espécies de difícil amostragem, sendo frequentemente omitida de estudos de biodiversidade especialmente em regiões de domínio de florestas tropicais. Adicionalmente, estudos faunísticos em regiões campestres, especialmente em campos de altitude são ainda escassos, e pouco se sabe sobre a distribuição dos organismos nessas localidades e quais os mecanismos responsáveis por tal. Desta forma, o presente estudo amostrou a fauna de Hesperiidae em três montanhas da Serra do Mar paranaense visando comparar sua riqueza sob diferentes perspectivas naturais e investigar padrões de composição, diversidade, riqueza e riqueza de endemismos relacionados à altitude e aos diferentes tipos vegetacionais relacionados. Adicionalmente a composição desta fauna amostrada foi comparada à de outros tipos vegetacionais campestres da América do Sul, objetivando verificar os possíveis mecanismos relacionados à sua distribuição. Mostrou-se que os Hesperiidae em geral foram coletados homogeneamente, tornando a riqueza de espécies passível de ser utilizada para comparações de assembléias. No entanto, a exibição

In view of the importance of sampling these areas, the present study conducted the first butterfly inventory of a coastal area in the state of Paraná. Samples were taken in the Floresta Estadual do Palmito, from February 2014 through January 2015, using insect nets and traps for fruit-feeding butterfly species. A total of 200 species were recorded, in the families Hesperiidae (77), Nymphalidae (73), Riodinidae (20), Lycaenidae (19), Pieridae (7) and Papilionidae (4). Particularly notable records included the rare and vulnerable Pseudotinea hemis (Schaus, 1927), representing the lowest elevation record for this species, and Temenis huebneri korallion Fruhstorfer, 1912, a new record for Paraná. These results reinforce the need to direct sampling efforts to poorly inventoried areas, to increase knowledge of the distribution and occurrence patterns of butterflies in Brazil. Since its unin- tentional arrival to the United States in 1989 and to Mexican islands in 2006, it has become a serious threat to the diversity of both wild and cultivated species of Opuntia Mill. in North America. The native ecological host range of C. cactorum has not been directly ascertained and host acceptance is unclear. Taxonomic nomenclature of Opuntia spp. has been confus- ing, contradictory, and rapidly changing, leading to inaccurate conclusions about host plant use by C. cactorum in its native South American range. This study was conducted to bet- ter understand the biology and ecology of C. cactorum in Argentina by evaluating, under laboratory conditions, the insects’ performance (survivorship, development time, potential fecundity) on 8 Opuntia spp. occurring in Argentina. Feeding trials were conducted on 5 Opuntia spp. native to Argentina and 3 Opuntia spp. native to Mexico. Sampling was carried out monthly between March 2008 and March 2009. After 204 net-hours of sampling effort, a total of 1,993 individuals from 253 species were recorded. With a single additional expedition, eight new species were added, reaching a total of 261 species recorded in the region of Porto Maua´.

SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA).

Abstract Exaggerated morphologies have evolved in insects as adaptations to nectar feeding by natural selection. For example, the suctorial mouthparts of butterflies enable these insects to gain access to floral nectar concealed inside deep floral tubes. Proboscis length in Lepidoptera is known to scale with body size, but whether extreme absolute proboscis lengths of nectar feeding butterflies result from a proportional or disproportional increase with body size that differs between phylogenetic lineages remains unknown. We surveyed the range of variation that occurs in scaling relationships between proboscis length and body size against a phylogenetic background among Costa Rican Hesperiidae. We obtained a new record holder for the longest proboscis in butterflies and showed that extremely long proboscides evolved at least three times independently within Europe PMC Funders Author Manuscripts Neotropical Hesperiidae. We conclude that the evolution of extremely long proboscides results from allometric scaling with body size, as demonstrated in hawk moths. We hypothesize that constraints on the evolution of increasingly long butterfly proboscides may come from (1) the underlying scaling relationships, i.e., relative proboscis length, combined with the butterfly’s flight style and flower-visiting behaviour and/or (2) developmental constraints during the pupal phase.

    Colombia A Greentours Reconnaissance Report 28th December 2018 to 18th January 2019 By Paul Cardy Daily report and systematic lists by Paul Cardy Day 1 Friday 28th December Arrival, to Pereira I arrived in Bogota, via Madrid, late afternoon, and checked in for the short internal flight to Pereira. There I was met at the small airport by my driver, and a short drive took us through the sultry Colombian evening to a comfortable hotel where I enjoyed a late dinner and slept. Day 2 Saturday 29th December Pereira, to Tatama National Park I had opted for a ten am departure after the long journey yesterday. Breakfast was a wide selection, the hotel full of Colombian families, this hotel obviously a fixture of a Saturday morning in Pereira. Rodrigo, who would be my driver for most of the recce, was there promptly to meet me. Leptotes blues flew in the gardens. Roadsides were pink with the flowers of Gliricidia sepium, widely planted here. Our drive took us over the Rio Cauca. The Andean topography in Colombia is rather complex, the chain splitting here into three cordilleras, the east and west slopes of each supporting a different biodiversity, between them inter Andean valleys and slopes. The isolated Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta has the highest coastal peaks in the world, and the great diversity continues with the pacific coast Choco endemic bird area, the eastern lowland Llanos, and the southern expanses of Amazonia. As we drove signs warned of various mammals which may have strayed onto the highway, the names given in latin, Dasypus novemcinctus for example (Nine-banded Armadillo), then Dasyprocta punctata (Central American Agouti).
