Cereal crops are a major aspect of the Canadian prairie landscape. This chapter focuses on insects of small grain cereals (wheat, oats, barley, and rye), but not on larger grains such as corn, which are less abundant on the Canadian prairies. Settlement of the Canadian prairies resulted in the replacement of vast amounts of native prairie plants with cereal crops. Many native insects adapted and flourished in this new habitat. Many alien insect species have also been accidentally introduced and are now pests of cereal crops. Other insects have been purposely introduced to regulate the populations of insect pests of cereal crops. Insect species are presented in feeding guilds in this chapter. Insects within a feeding guild feed on the same or a similar resource and may at times compete for this resource. Changes in cropping practices and varieties can also have an impact on the insect communities on cereal crops. Such interactions will also be described. Résumé. Mike’s enthusiasm and amazing knowledge of ladybirds was, and is (through his books and papers), an inspiration. He was a wonderful mentor and friend and had a logical answer to any question about ladybirds, insects in general or pretty much any other biological topic. Very special thanks go to my other supervisors – Dr Helen Roy, Dr Julian Doberski and Dr Alison Thomas. Helen, with Mike, gave me the initial opportunity to work on this project by employing me to co-ordinate the Harlequin Ladybird Survey. Helen has been a constant source of encouragement and inspiration from the moment that she suggested I register for the PhD. This work would not have been completed without her enthusiasm, guidance and friendship. Julian was my undergraduate supervisor and is responsible for sparking my interest in beetles. His advice and questioning from the point of view of a non-ladybird ecologist was extremely useful. Alison has been a wonderful source of encouragement and guidance, particularly during the final year of this project. She also helped to broaden the scope of the thesis. They also provide the foundation for our future programming activities and technical support as we work with industry members to deliver the information and resources needed to enable customers to make the best use of Canada’s 6 Feature field crops. We are particularly excited about the upcoming launch of our biodiesel short courses in January 2007 where we will take our technical expertise and experience in program delivery Technology on the road to offer producers across the Prairies unique hands-on demonstrations of 10 biodiesel production as well as impartial insight into the biodiesel industry. In the months ahead our plans include tailoring this information to benefit international customers who use biodiesel, further promoting Canada’s ability to meet their needs in this area. Profile Also on the horizon is the potential to undertake specific activities in conjunction with 12 Canada’s potato industry, following a recent update to our funding agreement. All of these opportunities further illustrate CIGI’s versatility in designing programs and services targeted to a wide variety of needs and interests.
