Egypt. J. Agric. Res., 89 (2), 2011 535 POPULATION DYNAMICS OF THE GREEN SHIELD SCALE, PULVINARIA PSIDII (HEMIPTERA : COCCIDAE) ON GUAVA TREES AT SHIBIN EL-QANATER DISTRICT, QALUBIYA GOVERNORATE, EGYPT ELWAN, E. A., A. M. SERAG AND MAHA I. EL-SAYED Plant Protection Research Institute, ARC, Dokki, Giza (Manuscript received 5 January, 2011) Abstract The population dynamics of the green shield scale, Pulvinaria psidii (Mask.) (Hemiptera - Coccidae) was studied for two successive years (2008-2009) on guava trees at Shibin El-Qanater district, Qalubiya Governorate. The obtained results revealed that, P. psidii occurred on guava trees all the year round and has two overlapping generations a year. The 1st generation started from early March to early August/mid-August, peaked in mid-May (early summer) with duration of 5.0 - 5.5 months at field conditions of 20.7 - 21.3°C and 70.7 - 71.9%R.H. The 2nd generation occurred from early May to mid-November, peaked in mid-August (late summer) with duration of 6.0 - 6.5 months at 24.2 - 25.0°C and 69.4 - 70.4%R.H., respectively. The favorable time for abundance of P. psidii occurred in early and late summer during both high temperature and relative humidity. The adult population was relatively higher than nymphal population one in winter months and this may be due to the cold weather and most of the nymphs attained to the adult stage which sheltered on stems bark or in the stem cracks. Daily mean temperature and %R.H. were effective on both nymph and adult populations in 1st and 2nd generations in the two studied years, the population was correlated with the increase of temperature. -
Hydrostratigraphic Characterization of Groundwater Systems in Khatatba Area Using Vertical Electric Sounding and Well Log Data, Sw Nile Delta, Egypt
ISSN 2321 – 9149 IJAEES (2014) Vol.2, No.1, 39-50 Research Article International Journal of Advancement in Earth and Environmental Sciences HYDROSTRATIGRAPHIC CHARACTERIZATION OF GROUNDWATER SYSTEMS IN KHATATBA AREA USING VERTICAL ELECTRIC SOUNDING AND WELL LOG DATA, SW NILE DELTA, EGYPT Abdulaziz M. Abdulaziz Mining, Petroleum, and Metallurgical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt ( [email protected]) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ABSTRACT: The study area represents the western extension of the Nile Delta flood plain at the contact of the desert, where the importance of ground water is rising. This requires a thorough understanding to the developed groundwater systems, particularly the shallow aquifers. In this study, well log data was integrated to a Vertical Electric Sounding (VES) survey acquired using Schlumberger configuration at the Khatatba area to characterize the aquifer systems. The results were interpreted using the published stratigraphic data of the study area, and consequently the extension of the identified aquifers can be laterally correlated. Two aquifer systems separated by an aquitard or basaltic layer were mapped and characterized in details. The upper aquifer corresponds to El Khashab formation that produces fresh to brackish water and generally shows unconfined condition that could locally change to partially semi confined. The second aquifer is commonly confined -

Journal of Engineering Sciences, Assiut University, Vol. 37, No. 5, pp. 1193-1207, September 2009. EVALUATION OF GROUNDWATER AQUIFER IN THE AREA BETWEEN EL-QUSIYA AND MANFALUT USING VERTICAL ELECTRIC SOUNDINGS (VES) TECHNIQUE 1 2 3 Waleed S.S. , Abd El-Monaim, A, E. , Mansour M.M. and El-Karamany M. F.3 1 Ministry of Water Resources (underground water sector) 2 Research Institute for Groundwater 3 Mining & Met. Dept., Faculty of Eng., Assiut University (Received August 5, 2009 Accepted August 17, 2009). The studied area is located northwest of Assiut city which represents a large part of the Nile Valley in Assiut governorate. It lies between latitudes 27° 15ƍ 00Ǝ and 27° 27ƍ 00Ǝ N, and longitudes 30° 42ƍ 30Ǝ to 31° 00ƍ E, covering approximately 330 square kilometers. Fifteen Vertical Electrical soundings (VES) were carried out to evaluate the aquifer in the study area. These soundings were arranged to construct three geoelectric profiles crossing the Nile Valley. Three cross sections were constructed along these profiles to detect the geometry and geoelectric characteristics of the quaternary aquifer based on the interpretation of the sounding curves and the comparison with available drilled wells. The interpretation showed that the thickness of the quaternary aquifer in the study area ranges between 75 and 300 m, in which the maximum thicknesses are detected around Manfalut and at the west of El-Qusiya. INTRODUCTION During the two last decades, there is a continuous demand for big amount of water necessary for the land expansion projects in Egypt. So, the development of groundwater resources receives special attention, since the groundwater reservoir underlying the Nile Valley and its adjacent desert areas acting as auxiliary source of water in Egypt. -

SYNAXARION, COPTO-ARABIC, List of Saints Used in the Coptic Church
(CE:2171b-2190a) SYNAXARION, COPTO-ARABIC, list of saints used in the Coptic church. [This entry consists of two articles, Editions of the Synaxarion and The List of Saints.] Editions of the Synaxarion This book, which has become a liturgical book, is very important for the history of the Coptic church. It appears in two forms: the recension from Lower Egypt, which is the quasi-official book of the Coptic church from Alexandria to Aswan, and the recension from Upper Egypt. Egypt has long preserved this separation into two Egypts, Upper and Lower, and this division was translated into daily life through different usages, and in particular through different religious books. This book is the result of various endeavors, of which the Synaxarion itself speaks, for it mentions different usages here or there. It poses several questions that we cannot answer with any certainty: Who compiled the Synaxarion, and who was the first to take the initiative? Who made the final revision, and where was it done? It seems evident that the intention was to compile this book for the Coptic church in imitation of the Greek list of saints, and that the author or authors drew their inspiration from that work, for several notices are obviously taken from the Synaxarion called that of Constantinople. The reader may have recourse to several editions or translations, each of which has its advantages and its disadvantages. Let us take them in chronological order. The oldest translation (German) is that of the great German Arabist F. Wüstenfeld, who produced the edition with a German translation of part of al-Maqrizi's Khitat, concerning the Coptic church, under the title Macrizi's Geschichte der Copten (Göttingen, 1845). -

History of the Royal Marines 1837-1914 HE Blumberg
History of the Royal Marines 1837-1914 HE Blumberg (Minor editing by Alastair Donald) In preparing this Record I have consulted, wherever possible, the original reports, Battalion War and other Diaries, accounts in Globe and Laurel, etc. The War Office Official Accounts, where extant, the London Gazettes, and Orders in Council have been taken as the basis of events recounted, and I have made free use of the standard histories, eg History of the British Army (Fortescue), History of the Navy (Laird Clowes), Britain's Sea Soldiers (Field), etc. Also the Lives of Admirals and Generals bearing on the campaigns. The authorities consulted have been quoted for each campaign, in order that those desirous of making a fuller study can do so. I have made no pretence of writing a history or making comments, but I have tried to place on record all facts which can show the development of the Corps through the Nineteenth and early part of the Twentieth Centuries. H E BLUMBERG Devonport January, 1934 1 P A R T I 1837 – 1839 The Long Peace On 20 June, 1837, Her Majesty Queen Victoria ascended the Throne and commenced the long reign which was to bring such glory and honour to England, but the year found the fortunes of the Corps at a very low ebb. The numbers voted were 9007, but the RM Artillery had officially ceased to exist - a School of Laboratory and nominally two companies quartered at Fort Cumberland as part of the Portsmouth Division only being maintained. The Portsmouth Division were still in the old inadequate Clarence Barracks in the High Street; Plymouth and Chatham were in their present barracks, which had not then been enlarged to their present size, and Woolwich were in the western part of the Royal Artillery Barracks. -
