Personalities and Perceptions: Churchill, De Gaulle, and British-Free French Relations 1940-1941 By: Samantha Sullivan Advised by: Drs. Steven Zdatny, Andrew Buchanan, and Meaghan Emery University of Vermont History Department Honors College Thesis April 17, 2019 Acknowledgements: Nearly half of my time at UVM was spent working on this project. Beginning as a seminar paper for Professor Zdatny’s class in Fall 2018, my research on Churchill and De Gaulle slowly grew into the thesis that follows. It was a collaborative effort that allowed me to combine all of my fields of study from my entire university experience. This project took me to London and Cambridge to conduct archival research and made for many late nights on the second floor of the Howe Library. I feel an overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment for this thesis that is reflective of the work I have done at UVM. -

Il Caso De Gaulle (1958-1965) Brizzi Riccardo
ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITA’ DI BOLOGNA DOTTORATO DI RICERCA IN STORIA DELL’ETA’ CONTEMPORANEA NEI SEC. XIX-XX XIX CICLO – “F. -

Reviewed by Leland Barrows (Voorhees College) Published on H-French-Colonial (January, 2010) Commissioned by Jyoti Mohan Myths and Realities: Conflicting Perceptions of French Colonial History and Postcolonialism Postcolonial studies came later to the Francophone than to the Anglophone world probably because of the trauma associated with much of French decolonization. There was also a felt need in France to come to terms with the Vichy era before turning to the almost as traumatic end of French rule in Algeria. But by the 1990s, French colonial studies were rapidly coming into vogue. The two books under review, Cultured Force, a revisionist history of the French empire that stresses a biographical approach to historical narrative, andMemory, Empire, and Postcolonialism, which publishes the proceedings of an interdisciplinary conference on cultural memory, are good examples of the varied types of writing that the rekindled interest in the French empire is spawning. “Biographical study,” the authors ofCultured Force inform their readers, “provides a relatively painless way to introduce people to an era’s subtleties,”enabling them to develop an awareness of the relativity and the contradictions of received truths, particularly those reflecting the history of modern imperialism and colonialism (p. -

The Role of Rhetoric in Anglo-French Imperial Relations, 1940-1945
1 Between Policy Making and the Public Sphere: The Role of Rhetoric in Anglo-French Imperial Relations, 1940-1945 Submitted by Rachel Renee Chin to the University of Exeter As a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History In September 2016 This thesis is available for library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other university. Signature: 2 Abstract The long history of Anglo-French relations has often been acrimonious. After the German defeat of France in June 1940 the right to represent the French nation was contested by Philippe Pétain’s Vichy government and Charles de Gualle’s London-based Free French resistance movement. This thesis will examine the highly complex relationship between Britain and these two competing sources of Frenchness between 1940 and 1945. It will do so through a series of empire-themed “crisis points,” which contributed to a heightened state of Anglo-French tension affecting all three actors. This study uses rhetoric as a means to link decision makers or statesman to the public sphere. It argues that policy makers, whether in the British War Cabinet, de Gaulle’s headquarters at Carlton Gardens, or Pétain’s ministries at Vichy anticipated how their policies were likely to be received by a group or groups of individuals. -
