EMW - Workshops EMW 2005 EARLY MODERN WORKSHOP: Jewish History Resources Volume 2: Jews and Urban Space, 2005, University of Maryland Rural Jews in Alsace Debra Kaplan, Yeshiva University, USA ABSTRACT: From 1348/9-1477, the Jews of Alsace were expelled from the cities in which they had lived throughout the Middle Ages. While many opted to leave the Empire for centers in Eastern Europe and Italy, some Jews remained, moving to the towns and villages in the countryside. By the 1470's, the majority of Alsatian Jews lived in rural areas. Quotas often dictated residential policies in towns and villages, so it was not uncommon to find one or two Jewish families per village/town. The following documents detail the relationship of rural Alsatian Jews, as represented by their communal leaders, with two Alsatian cities, Strasbourg and Hagenau. zeitenblicke 1 (2002), Nr. 2 Gabriele Jancke Selbstzeugnisse in transkultureller Perspektive [*] <1> The following will be divided into two parts: at first, I will outline a research project we are planning at the Free University in Berlin. Secondly, I shall draw on my own work on early modern autobiographical writings [1], in order to point out some of the aspects we intend to explore in this project on a more general and larger scale. I. Research project "Selbstzeugnisse in transkultureller Perspective" <2> In the beginning phase there were several scholars at the Free University working on "Selbstzeugnisse" - Claudia Ulbrich and Gudrun Wedel, for example, to name just some fellow-historians, but there were far more. We discovered that there were scholars doing research on egodocuments in the classics department as well as in medieval, early modern and modern history, and even in japanology, Arabic studies and turkology. <3> The other starting point was university politics. Two years ago, in the course of restructuring faculties and making them much larger than before, there were several different subjects lumped together into one large "faculty of historical and cultural studies" ("Fachbereich Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften"), and - more important - encouraged to work together ("encouraged" means that there is some money and organizational help involved). It was then that we had the first meetings and started to think about a joint project. A first presentation took place in a session organized by Claudia Ulbrich (Berlin) and Kaspar von Greyerz (Basel) at the Historikertag in Aachen in 2000. Contributors were Desanka Schwara (Leipzig), Gerhard Wedel (Berlin), and Natalie Zemon Davis (Toronto). -

Gennady Estraikh Sholem Aleichem and Qumran: Jewish-Related Scholarship in the Soviet Union, 1953–1967 The Jewishacademic centers established in the earlySoviet state functionedal- most exclusively in Yiddish and had eclipsed or subdued the remnants of Jewish studies pursued at academic and independent organizations of the pre-1917pe- riod. In Kiev,the most vigorous of the new centers developedultimatelyinto the Institute of JewishProletarian Culture(IJPC), astructural unit of the Ukrainian AcademyofSciences.By1934, the IJPC had on its payroll over seventy people in academic and administrative roles.Two years later,however,the Stalinist purgesofthe time had consumed the IJPC and sent manyofits employees to prison to be later sentenced to death or gulag.¹ In Minsk, the authorities similarly destroyed the academic Institute of National Minorities, which mainlydealt with Jewish-related research.² By this time, all Jewish(in fact,Yiddish-language) ed- ucational institutions,includinguniversity departments, ceased to exist.Some scholars moved to otherfields of research or left academia entirely. Soviet school instruction and culturalactivity in Yiddish emergedinthe territories of Poland, Romania, and the Baltic states,forciblyacquiredin1939and 1940,but after June 22, 1941, all these disappearedinthe smoke of World WarII. However,the IJPC had an afterlife: in the fall of 1936,the authorities permit- ted the formation of asmall academic unit named the Bureau(kabinet)for Re- search on Jewish Literature, Language, and Folklore. The Bureauendured until 1949,when it fell victim to acampaign that targeted the remainingJewish insti- tutions. 2000.03.07. CEU 1 SPLIT IN TWO OR DOUBLED? Zsuzsa Hetényi The title is taken from an article by Iosif Bikerman published in 1910.1 There it is presented as a statement (‘not split in two but doubled’), but I shall consider it as a question because the history of Russian Jewish literature is not only a thing of the past: Russian Jewish authors began to ask questions that we continue to ask even today and that we cannot yet answer. My purpose in this paper is threefold: to discuss some theoretical questions, to give a short survey of the 80 years of Russian Jewish literature, and finally to analyse a short story by Lev Lunz. First, I would like to say something about how I arrived at this topic. In 1991 I published a book on Isaac Babel’s Red Cavalry,2 a collection of 35 stories based on the writer’s experiences with Budenny’s Cavalry in 1920. The main issue for me was what problems led Babel to this unusual form of self-expression. The most important layer of this cycle of stories is Babel’s duality, which is expressed in various ways. ‘I am an outsider, in long trousers, I don’t belong, I’m all alone’, he writes in his diary of 1920.3 Babel is ambivalent about his Jewishness – he belongs organically to his people and at the same time he finds them repellent. Sometimes he lies to his fellow Jews, hiding his Jewishness. When going to the synagogue, he is moved by the service but unable to follow it in his prayer book. -

Die Autoren dieser Beiträge sind der russisch-jüdische Altphilologe, Übersetzer und Publizist Shimon Markish (VEK), Genf, und der russische Philosoph und Kulturhistoriker Boris Paramonov (Zvezda), New York. Martin Luther's remarks as noted above were directed to the princes and nobles of Germany. Four hundred years later a German prince named Adolf Hitler wrote, "I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord."2 It is a sad fact that the Nazi propaganda experts fOllnd much in Luther's writings to weave the net of hatred that so readily engulfed the German people. -

Transue In his Introduction to this collection of original essays, Professor Kittelson notes that the university is one of the few institutions that medieval Latin Christendom contributed directly to modern Western civilization. An export wherever else it is found, it is unique to Western culture. All cultures, to be sure, have had their intellec tuals—those men and women whose task it has been to learn, to know, and to teach. But only in Latin Christendom were scholars—the company of masters and students—found gathered together into the universitas whose entire purpose was to develop and disseminate knowledge in a continu ous and systematic fashion with little regard for the consequences of their activities. MarkétaKabůrková Edom versus Edom Echoes of the Lutheran Reformation in Early Modern Jewish Writings Five hundred years have passed since Martin Luther stepped out publiclywith his Ninety-five Theses and launched the Reformation.¹ This movecarried far- reachingconsequences not onlywithin Christian circlesbut also for European Jewry.Itwas onlynatural that the Jews of the period evinced a “great interest in Luther,who seemed to wield the shovel digging the graveofChristianity’sbur- ial”² Jewishauthorswereinterested in the Protestant Reformation, in the person and teachingsofMartin Luther,and in the theological schism within Christen- dom as well. Unsurprisingly,they judgedthe religious struggle between the new sect and the CatholicChurch from their own frame of referenceand no sin- gle ‘Jewish’ view manifesteditself, but avariety of perspectivesselectively favor- ing different groups and religious doctrines instead emerged. This topic has rather escaped scholarlyattention.
