This fund is established by a loving group of regulars in memory of Lil’s 35+ years of bi-weekly Friday night sings, “a breeding and feeding ground for many of today’s accomplished singers and musicians.”

By the time you read this column, I hope that the snow and cold weather will be gone, even if April does bring some rain. April also brings the Sea Music concert with Heather Wood & David Jones, the Folk Open Sing, the Chantey Sing, the Sacred Harp Sing and the children’s house concert with Takako Nagumo. Put Lissa Schneckenburger and Band on your calendar for May 4th and Don Friedman for May 5th. Don’t forget to put in your reservations for the Spring Weekend! Continued on next page - 6 - Letter from Joanne Davis To My Pinewoods Friends: As many of you know, I was hospitalized for several months following an elective surgery last July that was supposed to make ambulating much easier but instead led to the worst time of my life. A lot of you had become close friends over the years, and from the start you were there for me, to the extent that in more than two months at Presbyterian Hospital I was without visitors for only four or five days. A great many of my visitors were Pinewoods members. Some of you came from a considerable dis- tance, and I had phone calls (when you were able to find out which new unit I'd been sent to), cards, and more chocolate than even I could consume. Later on, after a notice about my situation appeared in the Newsletter, members I hadn't seen in years called or visited. You couldn't do much to improve my physical condition, but you provided an emotional cushion for me to lean on that was equally important, if not more so. After transferring to a Nursing Home for a couple more months of rehab I returned home in November. I'm working hard at physical therapy, hoping to get to a point where I can resume attending weekends and the occasional New York City concert (we live in Woodstock).....oh, and giving concerts again. I'm sporadically working on a "Hospi- tal Suite", for which I have a ton of raw material. I can never thank you enough for your support and affection. I always kind of figured Pinewoods was a family, but it seemed a bit touchy-feely to utter such a sentiment aloud. Not any more! Most sincerely, Joanne Davis USE IT OR LOSE IT ?? If you've attended one of our Spring or Fall club weekends, you've no doubt witnessed (or been part of) a No-Name-Yet-Gospel-Group performance during a Camper Con- cert. This enthusiastic gaggle of singers, led by Isabel Goldstein, doesn't quite out- number the audience, though it sometimes appears close. This is exciting, joyful mu- sic, a pleasure to hear and even more enjoyable to sing. The participants are of many religions (or no religion), and the words they sing are meaningful to some, but it's ALWAYS the music that draws everyone together. Every month or so the Club sponsors a gospel/Sacred Harp sing at the home of a Club member -- the locale varies. We go around the circle and each person can pick a favorite gospel or Sacred Harp piece, four-part music, from the large selection we have available. If it's familiar, we zip through it, or go over it a bit if necessary. Occasionally an unfamiliar gem will emerge; a pleasant surprise! There's lively chit-chat before the singing and a tasty potluck afterwards. A nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. In the past, lots of singers showed up, sometimes 30 plus, but the numbers have dwindled. We still have fun, but one day we might drop below critical mass and just become a treasured memory. Only YOU can help preserve this fine mini-institution (while hav- ing an enjoyable experience) by showing up from time to time. Next gathering will be Sunday, May 6 in an attractive Brooklyn apartment; near mass transit, and with passably easy parking. (Details elsewhere in this issue.) We look forward to singing with you. - Sol Weber From the Editor, Continued from page 6 Thank you to the volunteers who help to put out the newsletter each month and ensure that you get the word about what’s going on in the club and at events throughout the city. It's a moderated e-mail exchange list, also called a listserv, among people who host and/or produce folk music programs on the radio throughout North America. It also has a few participants beyond the continent in places as close as the US Virgin Islands and as far away as Australia and New Zealand. On a typical day, the Folk DJ List, which is one of many listservs hosted by Pennsylvania State University, disseminates more than two dozen new messages. People who are not folk DJs are welcome to join the listserv as long as their e mail messages are on-topic. That means the message must concern folk music as it relates to the radio, or the radio as it relates to folk music. Announcements of newly released folk CDs, for example, are considered on-topic and will be forwarded to the list. Announcements of upcoming live performances, however, are generally considered off topic and will be not be forwarded.
