  • Final Weeks of Popular Jean Renoir Retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release November 1994 FINAL WEEKS OF POPULAR JEAN RENOIR RETROSPECTIVE AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART The Museum of Modern Art's popular retrospective of the complete extant work of director Jean Renoir (1894-1979), one of cinema's great masters, continues through November 27, 1994. Presented in commemoration of the centenary of the director's birth, the exhibition comprises thirty-seven works, including thirty-three films by Renoir and a 1993 BBC documentary about the filmmaker by David Thompson. Twenty-three of the works by Renoir have been drawn from the Museum's film archives. Many of the remaining titles are also from the Cinematheque frangaise, Paris, and Interama, New York. The son of the Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Jean Renoir produced a rich and complex oeuvre that mined the spectacle of life, in all its fascinating inconstancy. In 1967 he said, "I'm trying to discover human beings, and sometimes I do." Although critics and scholars disagree on how to categorize Renoir's films -- some believe that his work can be divided into periods, while others argue that his films should be viewed as an indivisible whole -- there is no dissent about their integrity. His works are unfailingly humane, psychologically acute, and bursting with visual and aural moments that propel the narratives. - more - 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019-5498 Tel: 212-708-9400 Cable: MODERNART Telex: 62370 MODART 2 Highlights of the second half of the program include a new 35mm print of La Bete humaine (The Beast in Man, 1938), a powerful adaptation of a novel by Emile Zola, previously available in the United States only in 16mm.

boston live tom scholz download torrent Boston - Boston (1976) (WLP PBTHAL LP 24-96) [FLAC] Vtwin88cube. Boston is one of the best-selling albums of all time, and deservedly so. Because of the rise of disco and punk, FM rock radio seemed all but dead until the rise of acts like Boston, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen. Nearly every song on Boston's debut album could still be heard on classic rock radio decades later due to the strong vocals of Brad Delp and unique guitar sound of Tom Scholz. Tom Scholz, who wrote most of the songs, was a studio wizard and used self-designed equipment such as 12-track recording devices to come up with an anthemic "arena rock" sound before the term was even coined. The sound was hard rock, but the layered melodies and harmonics reveal the work of a master craftsman. While much has been written about the sound of the album, the lyrics are often overlooked. There are songs about their rise from a bar band ("Rock and Roll Band") as well as fond remembrances of summers gone by ("More Than a Feeling"). Boston is essential for any fan of classic rock, and the album marks the re-emergence of the genre in the 1970s. LASSETER May 2013 Copyright M.E. Lasseter 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This thesis traces the various physical and metaphorical journeys south of Chicago musician Andrew Bird. Using what historical record is publicly available, I examine Bird’s formal musical training. I then explore the years between 1995 and 2001, or what I call Bird’s period of apprenticeship. Next is an exploration of the canonical narratives surrounding the blues of the Mississippi Delta, especially the music of Charley Patton. When Andrew Bird encountered a canon, or dominant histories and meanings of Southern music that influence how musicians play and how audiences interpret that music, he began to react against that canon in his own compositions and performances.

Another noteworthy happening from that rich period in our country’s popular culture was the fact that Fran Cosmo, otherwise known as the former lead singer of Boston, got his first big music business break. In 1980, Cosmo (a.k.a. Francis Cosmo Migliaccio) was approached by Barry Gou- dreau, guitarist for Boston, about working on Goudreau’s debut solo album. Cosmo jumped at the chance to work with Goudreau, and three years later their collaboration led to the forma- tion of a new act, Orion the Hunter. The self-titled debut Cosmo and Goudreau released shortly thereafter might not have made Orion the Hunter a household name, but it did give radio listeners the hit single “So You Ran” and scored the group a tour of the U.S. with Aerosmith for their Back in the Saddle tour. Cosmo’s collaboration with Goudreau also got his foot in the door with Boston, at the time an unstoppable force in the world of classic rock, and seven years later Cosmo was invited to join Boston as lead singer, Brad Delp hav- FRAN COSMO ing left the band w/PARADISE to pursue other projects.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION ARTS AND SCIENCES IDENTITY AND HIP-HOP: AN ANALYSIS OF EGO-FUNCTION IN THE COLLEGE DROPOUT AND THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL LAURA KASTNER SPRING 2017 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Communication Arts & Sciences and Statistics with honors in Communication Arts & Sciences Reviewed and approved* by the following: Anne Demo Assistant Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences Thesis Supervisor Lori Bedell Senior Lecturer of Communication Arts & Sciences Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT In this thesis, I will be analyzing how Kanye West and Lauryn Hill create identity for themselves and their listeners in the albums The College Dropout and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, respectively. Identity creation will be analyzed using Richard Gregg’s concept of ego-function. By applying the three stages of the theory – victimization of the ego, demonization of the enemy, and reaffirmation of the ego – to both albums, I hope to uncover the ways that both West and Hill contribute to identity creation. I also discuss the ways in which they create identity that cannot be explained by ego-function theory. I also briefly address the following questions: (1) How does the language of ego-function differ between the artists? (2) How does their music speak to listeners of different ethnicities? (3) What role does gender play in ego-function? Does the language of ego-function differ between genders? ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Acknowledgements ………………………………………………………………......iii Chapter 1 Introduction ................................................................................................. 1 Kanye West: The Jerk and the Genius ............................................................................
