  • Final Weeks of Popular Jean Renoir Retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release November 1994 FINAL WEEKS OF POPULAR JEAN RENOIR RETROSPECTIVE AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART The Museum of Modern Art's popular retrospective of the complete extant work of director Jean Renoir (1894-1979), one of cinema's great masters, continues through November 27, 1994. Presented in commemoration of the centenary of the director's birth, the exhibition comprises thirty-seven works, including thirty-three films by Renoir and a 1993 BBC documentary about the filmmaker by David Thompson. Twenty-three of the works by Renoir have been drawn from the Museum's film archives. Many of the remaining titles are also from the Cinematheque frangaise, Paris, and Interama, New York. The son of the Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Jean Renoir produced a rich and complex oeuvre that mined the spectacle of life, in all its fascinating inconstancy. In 1967 he said, "I'm trying to discover human beings, and sometimes I do." Although critics and scholars disagree on how to categorize Renoir's films -- some believe that his work can be divided into periods, while others argue that his films should be viewed as an indivisible whole -- there is no dissent about their integrity. His works are unfailingly humane, psychologically acute, and bursting with visual and aural moments that propel the narratives. - more - 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019-5498 Tel: 212-708-9400 Cable: MODERNART Telex: 62370 MODART 2 Highlights of the second half of the program include a new 35mm print of La Bete humaine (The Beast in Man, 1938), a powerful adaptation of a novel by Emile Zola, previously available in the United States only in 16mm.

  • Renoir in the '30S Instructor: Michael Fox Tuesdays, 10 Am-12:30 Pm
Renoir in the ‘30s Instructor: Michael Fox Tuesdays, 10 am-12:30 pm, Sept. 24-Oct. 29, 2019 [email protected] The greatest filmmaker in the world, according to both Orson Welles and Francis Truffaut, Jean Renoir began making movies in the silent era. With the introduction of sound, the writer, director and occasional actor embarked on his most productive and greatest period. The remarkable body of work he produced in the 1930s, from the still-innovative La Chienne through the reviled and rediscovered The Rules of the Game, encompasses melodrama, social realism, tragicomedy, historical epic and farce. This lecture and screening class explores the genius and contradictions of a humanist who combined effortless artistry with accessible social critique. The son of the great impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Jean Renoir made his mark in the early thirties with an anarchic send-up of the bourgeoisie (Boudu Saved From Drowning) and a popular-front Gorky adaptation (The Lower Depths). He closed the decade with two critical humanistic studies of French society—Grand Illusion (celebrated in its time) and The Rules of the Game (trashed by critics and audiences, and reassessed much later)—that routinely make the lists of the greatest movies ever made. After a brief, unfulfilling Hollywood stint during World War II, Renoir traveled to India to make his first Technicolor film, The River, and returned to Europe in the early fifties to direct three visually impressive explorations of theater, The Golden Coach, French Cancan and Elena and Her Men. After completing The Little Theater of Jean Renoir, comprised of three short films, in the late sixties, he dedicated himself to writing.

  • Profondeur De Champ in Jean Renoir's the Golden Coach
Profondeur de champ in Jean Renoir’s The Golden Coach By Barry Nevin Fall 2012 Issue of KINEMA ARTIFICE IN DEPTH: THE EVOLUTION OF PROFONDEUR DE CHAMP IN JEAN RENOIR’S THE GOLDEN COACH The ideal response to the problem posed by colour is to completely avoid […] the vérité extérieure and work entirely in studio décor. [… ] The vérité intérieure is often hidden behind a purely artificial environment.(1) - Jean Renoir […] Realism in art can only be achieved through artifice.(2) - André Bazin The Golden Coach (1953), filmed in the aftermath of Renoir’s American experience and the production of The River, can appear somewhat anomalous within the context of his career: the deep, singular hues of the Indian environment and the British family’s residence in The River (1951 [cf. Figs. A - B]) are sacrificed for the multicoloured commedia dell’arte costumes worn by Camilla and the rest of the theatre troupe. Figure 1: Figures A - B. Two examples of use of Technicolor in The River (1951): the first conveys the simplicity of the colour palette. The second exemplifies the deep, saturated hues favoured by Renoir for this film. Most surprisingly, the relational complexities created by the intricate organisation of space for which Renoir’s work of the 1930s was championed by the critics of Cahiers du Cinéma (most notably André Bazin)(3) and continues to be lauded to this day, are largely renounced. Strikingly absent in The Golden Coach is Renoir’s use of the mobile camera. Nowhere in this vivid reflection on the theatrical are we reminded of the constant swooping of the camera and the lateral depth of field granted by the much-debated 270º pan during the climatic murder sequence of Le Crime de Monsieur Lange (1935).

• Dvd Press Release
DVD & Blu-ray press release French Cancan A film by Jean Renoir After bursting on to cinema screens in August, in a new Digital restoration, the BFI now releases Jean Renoir’s exuberant French Cancan in a Dual Format Edition (DVD & Blu-ray discs together), accompanied by an hour-long documentary on the making of the film. This Technicolor tour-de-force, set in the Paris of the belle époque, brings to ravishing, dazzling life the world of Jean Renoir’s father, Pierre Auguste, and other Impressionists such as Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec and Manet, in one of the great films about the complex relationship between life and the theatre. French Cancan is loosely based on the founding of the world famous Parisian cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Henri Danglard (Jean Gabin) is a brilliant impresario whose life is fraught with romantic entanglements and financial problems. Falling in love with Nini (Françoise Arnoul), a pretty young laundry girl from Montmartre, he decides to make her the star of his latest venture – a club called the Moulin Rouge which will offer ‘high life for modest purses’. Its principal attraction will be the cancan, an old working-class dance which Danglard plans to revive and revamp. Along the way, however, his dream is threatened by the jealousy of his belly-dancer lover Lola (a flamboyant performance from Mexican star María Félix). This was the film that marked Renoir’s return to France following a fifteen-year exile in Hollywood, reuniting him with his favourite Jean Gabin (Les Bas-Fonds, La Grande Illusion, La Bête Humaine) and with the Montmartre where he was born in 1894.

  • Barnes Foundation Presents Major Exhibition Exploring Artistic Relationship Between Filmmaker Jean Renoir and Painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: BARNES FOUNDATION PRESENTS MAJOR EXHIBITION EXPLORING ARTISTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FILMMAKER JEAN RENOIR AND PAINTER PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR RENOIR: FATHER AND SON/PAINTING AND CINEMA May 6 through September 3, 2018 Philadelphia, PA, January 17, 2018—Premiering May 6, 2018, at the Barnes Foundation— home to the world’s largest collection of paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir—is a major exhibition examining the artistic exchange between the renowned impressionist painter and his son, celebrated filmmaker Jean Renoir. Renoir: Father and Son/Painting and Cinema brings together over 120 works, including paintings, films, drawings, ceramics, costumes, photographs, and posters—many never before shown in the US—for an illuminating exploration of Pierre- Auguste’s role in his son’s oeuvre and the relationship between painting and cinema. The exhibition is curated by Sylvie Patry, Consulting Curator at the Barnes and Chief Curator/Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs and Collections at the Musée d’Orsay, and is organized by the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, and the Musées d'Orsay et de l'Orangerie, Paris, in collaboration with La Cinémathèque française, Paris. Renoir: Father and Son/Painting and Cinema is sponsored by Comcast NBCUniversal, and is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Acclaimed director Jean Renoir (1894–1979) is perhaps best known for such films as La Grande illusion (The Grand Illusion) (1937), Partie de campagne (A Day in the Country) (shot in 1936, released in 1946), and La Règle du jeu (The Rules of the Game) (1939), all of which are considered milestones in the history of 20th-century art.
