Tomorrow’s Tulips This trio of Alex, Christina and Ford brings an absolute fearlessness to their stripped down pop that often revolves around subjects like flowers, happiness, love, haircuts, friends, and un-macho-ism. Tijuana Panthers The Tijuana Panthers got their name from a present from a neighbor, a little black ceramic panther, and their sound, which is bristles with hooks and three-part harmonies, from that strange and happy place where punk bands crash into pop music. The Tijuana Panthers come striding proudly out of their hometown of Long Beach. 77 FAIR DRIVE, COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA 92626 (714) 754-5288 • FAX: (714) 754-5330 • TDD: (714) 754-5244 • www.costamesaca.gov CITY OF COSTA P.O. BOX 1200, COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA 92628-1200 MESA FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS MANAGER Penguin Prison Gospel choir at 10, jingles by 11, punk rock at 12, Chris Glover got a quick start musically. As a guitarist he covered the tunes of American variety bands such as Green Day, NOFX and Bad Religion. In 2009, Glover became Penguin Prison and a debut album, chock-full of catchy hooks and classic pop choruses, quickly followed. MAIN STAGE Micah Brown This 20-something guitarist and singer-songwriter, based in Dana Point, blends his early influences of blues and folk. Micah co-produces and releases his solo work of original music with producer Lewis Richards from 17th Street Recording Studios in Costa Mesa. Little Hurricane This San Diego duo's bruised sound is rooted in restless rhythms and heated hooks. Drummer CC turned to Craigslist for collaborators. She found Tone, a songwriter, and they began crafting songs in CC's living room. This vibe is reflected in the vintage furniture (complete with built-in speakers) and lamps on stage with Little Hurricane. Wanda Jackson Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Wanda Jackson is known as “The Queen of Rockabilly” and is credited with being the first woman to ever record a rock and roll song, “Let’s Have a Party, in 1958. Her mainstream country hits include "Tears Will Be the Chaser for Your Wine", "A Woman Lives for Love" and "Fancy Satin Pillows." Berlin Berlin is an American New Wave/Synthpop band. The group was formed in Los Angeles in 1978 and first gained commercial success in the mid-1980s with singles including "The Metro," "Sex (I'm A...)," "No More Words" and the chart-topping single "Take My Breath Away" from the 1986 film “Top Gun.” SATURDAY, June 29 – Venues open at 3 p.m. and close at 11 p.m. FAIR STREET STAGE All-American Boys Chorus The All-American Boys Chorus consists of happy youngsters from more than 30 cities in Southern California. The groups have done 45 concert tours in Europe, Asia, Canada and throughout the U.S., making it one of the most widely traveled boy’s choirs in the world. More than one million people, including the pope and other dignitaries, have seen the boys’ live performances. Moonsville Collective Moonsville Collective is an old-time band whose sound is rooted in the various American musical styles found, and often left behind, in pre-World War II America. The songwriters work independently and collectively to create a unique batch of string band, folk, country, Dixie and New Orleans rag music. The Soft Pack The Soft Pack makes a racket that lies somewhere in between post-punk and post-Warren Zevon. In 2010, they released singles "Answer to Yourself" and "C'mon" and spent much of that year on tour. They have appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” Their latest album, “Strapped,” was released in 2012. Droog This DJ collective of Andrei Osyka, Brett Griffin and Justin Sloe has steadily built a reputation as one of the leading purveyors of forward-thinking dance music. Between 2007 and 2011, Droog held down a residency at Avalon Hollywood. In 2009 the trio made a leap into a new territory by launching the LA-based record label, Culprit. 77 FAIR DRIVE, COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA 92626 (714) 754-5288 • FAX: (714) 754-5330 • TDD: (714) 754-5244 • www.costamesaca.gov CITY OF COSTA P.O. BOX 1200, COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA 92628-1200 MESA FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS MANAGER Jacques Renault As a DJ, Jacques has held residencies at some of New York's famed venues and has been a guest venues such as Tokyo's Womb, Rio de Janeiro’s D-edge and London's Fabric and Plastic People. With his remixes, edits, original tracks and collaborative project Runaway, he has released music on internationally acclaimed labels. MAIN STAGE He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister This eclectic L.A. band featuring sibling vocalists – Robert and Rachel Kolar – and a tap dancing drummer exudes the earnestness of folk, the colorfulness of glam rock, the rawness of blues, the theatrics of cabaret and hip shaking of rock-a-billy. The White Buffalo The White Buffalo's song “Wrong” was featured in pro surfer Chris Malloy’s popular surf movie, “Shelter,” creating a burgeoning fan base and leading to further film scoring and composing work, with songs featured in FX's hit show “Sons of Anarchy” and HBO's “Californication.” The White Buffalo has a hard working, no frills approach. They load their own gear and pack it all up at the end of the night. Adam Green & Binki Shapiro This duo is cherished by indie fans for their off-kilter sensibility (him) and elegantly quirky style (her). Green first came to prominence as one-half of Moldy Peaches, which enjoyed belated mainstream success via the Grammy- winning soundtrack of the 2007 indie film “Juno.” Shapiro was with Little Joy, a breezy Brazilian-accented Los Angeles group that enchanted both critics and listeners with its eponymous 2008 debut LP. Dan Krikorian Dan's latest venture, "Windsor Blue" is influenced by various sources, including classic literature and Bob Dylan. Dan finds his own voice by mixing a unique blend of folk, Americana, blues and pop to explore everything from family and love to mortality and loss. Dan will perform his song, “Costa Mesa My Sweet Home.” the official song of Costa Mesa’s 60th anniversary celebration. To download a version of the song, go to www.costamesaca.gov/song Chevy Metal Featuring members of the Foo Fighters, Chevy Metal is a 1970s dirt rock cover band. Here’s how they describe themselves: “We play deep cuts off albums by Sabbath, Van Halen, Queen and The Stones, to name a few. If you want us to play your party, we'll do it for a million dollars.” Eric Burdon &The Animals Formed in Newcastle upon Tyne during 1962 and 1963 when Eric Burdon joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, they were dubbed "animals" because of their wild stage act and the name stuck. A rocking version of the standard “Baby Let Me Follow You Down” (retitled “Baby Let Me Take You Home”) was their first single. It was followed in June 1964 by the transatlantic No. 1 hit “House of the Rising Sun.” Burdon's howling vocals and the dramatic arrangement created one of the first folk/rock hits. The band was a headliner at the Newport Pop Festival in 1968, held in Costa Mesa. City fathers did not welcome the Festival back for 1969, so the 60th anniversary concert is a return trip for Eric and his Animal band mates. SUNDAY, June 30 – Venues open at noon and close at 9 p.m. FAIR STREET STAGE Boogaloo Assassins 77 FAIR DRIVE, COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA 92626 (714) 754-5288 • FAX: (714) 754-5330 • TDD: (714) 754-5244 • www.costamesaca.gov CITY OF COSTA P.O. BOX 1200, COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA 92628-1200 MESA FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS MANAGER The Boogaloo Assassins' name might hint at homicide, but their efforts are strictly life-saving. This Los Angeles nine-piece band is dedicated to re-creating and re-interpreting the boogaloo craze that swept East Harlem, the Latin Caribbean and South America from 1965 to 1969.

1 Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives BeachLife Music Festival Gets It Right Steve Gottfried · Wednesday, May 15th, 2019 The City of Redondo Beach hosted its first-ever BeachLife Festival with an eclectic lineup of 40 bands on three stages spread over three days from Friday May rd3 to Sunday May 5th. The festival promoters chose well with an impressive roster of headliners which included Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, Bob Weir, Willie Nelson, Jason Mraz and Sugar Ray as well as a wide array of local talent on the smaller Rip Tide Stage. The beauty of music festivals like this is you can pick and choose which performers speak to you and skip the others. And occasionally, the unexpected happens when you come across a band you’d never heard of that rings your bell. For me, the big draw was Jason Mraz, whom I’d never seen live. And the other was the ‘80s synth pop band Berlin, known for a string of hits like “No More Words,” “Metro,” “Sex” and “Masquerade” that left an indelible mark on the ‘80s music scene with its industrial Euro sound. Little did I know the band was comprised of SoCal natives by way of Orange County. Lead Singer Terri Nunn brought the magic of the ‘80s back like a bolt of lightning, stalking the stage like she stepped out of one of their vintage MTV videos. Dressed in a fashionable blue trench coat mini and knee-high black boots, Nunn unleashed the hits with powerful, crystal clear vocals. And the crowd loved every minute.

  • Roots Radical – Place, Power and Practice in Punk Entrepreneurship Sarah Louise Drakopoulou Dodd
Roots radical – Place, power and practice in punk entrepreneurship Sarah Louise Drakopoulou Dodd The significance continues to grow of scholarship that embraces critical and contextualized entrepreneurship, seeking rich explorations of diverse entrepreneurship contexts. Following these influences, this study explores the potentialized context of punk entrepreneurship. The Punk Rock band Rancid has a 20-year history of successfully creating independent musical and related creative enterprises from the margins of the music industry. The study draws on artefacts, interviews and videos created by and around Rancid to identify and analyse this example of marginal, alternative entrepreneurship. A three-part analytic frame was applied to analysing these artefacts. Place is critical to Rancid’s enterprise, grounding the band socially, culturally, geographically and politically. Practice also plays an important role with Rancid’s activities encompassing labour, making music, movement and human interactions. The third, and most prevalent, dimension of alterity is that of power which includes data related to dominance, subordination, exclusion, control and liberation. Rancid’s entrepreneurial story is depicted as cycles, not just a linear journey, but following more complicated paths – from periphery to centre, and back again; returning to roots, whilst trying to move forwards too; grounded in tradition but also radically focused on dramatic change. Paradox, hybridized practices, and the significance of marginal place as a rich resource also emerged from the study. Keywords: entrepreneurship; social construction; punk rock; paradox; marginality; periphery Special thanks are due to all the punks and skins who have engaged with my reading of the Rancid story, and given me so much support and feedback along the way, especially Rancid’s drummer, Branden Steineckert, Jesse from Machete Manufacturing, Kostis, Tassos (Rancid Punx Athens Crew) and Panayiotis.

NO BALLAD, NO CRY dele began writing new material for her follow- up record in April 2009. But not before she agreed to take a fl yer as an actress with a guest shot on the hit tele vi- sion sitcom Ugly Betty. It seemed like a harm- Aless diversion from all the drama and pressure in her life. She reasoned, how hard could it be to play herself? In the episode, Betty is dancing with her husband at their wedding when the couple is suddenly interrupted by Adele. Th ere is some harmless banter and the next thing we know Adele is up on stage singing the song “Right As Rain.” Adele realized that that kind of promotion in America was well worth the eff ort, but would later acknowledge in Vogue that the Ugly Betty experience cured her of any future acting aspirations. “I can’t watch it. I was so uncomfortable. I am the worst actress of all time.” But Adele was thankful for the momentary respite from Marc Shapiro her day job as singer-songwriter on the rise.

  • Psaudio Copper
Issue 116 JULY 27TH, 2020 “Baby, there’s only two more days till tomorrow.” That’s from the Gary Wilson song, “I Wanna Take You On A Sea Cruise.” Gary, an outsider music legend, expresses what many of us are feeling these days. How many conversations have you had lately with people who ask, “what day is it?” How many times have you had to check, regardless of how busy or bored you are? Right now, I can’t tell you what the date is without looking at my Doug the Pug calendar. (I am quite aware of that big “Copper 116” note scrawled in the July 27 box though.) My sense of time has shifted and I know I’m not alone. It’s part of the new reality and an aspect maybe few of us would have foreseen. Well, as my friend Ed likes to say, “things change with time.” Except for the fact that every moment is precious. In this issue: Larry Schenbeck finds comfort and adventure in his music collection. John Seetoo concludes his interview with John Grado of Grado Labs. WL Woodward tells us about Memphis guitar legend Travis Wammack. Tom Gibbs finds solid hits from Sophia Portanet, Margo Price, Gerald Clayton and Gillian Welch. Anne E. Johnson listens to a difficult instrument to play: the natural horn, and digs Wanda Jackson, the Queen of Rockabilly. Ken hits the road with progressive rock masters Nektar. Audio shows are on hold? Rudy Radelic prepares you for when they’ll come back. Roy Hall tells of four weddings and a funeral.

  • The Good News of Identifying Bad Religion
57 http://onfaith.washingtonpost.com/onfaith/panelists/willis_e_elliott/2008/05/the_good_news_of_identifying_b.html The Good News of Identifying Bad Religion As a pro-choice evangelical, I was saddened by the violentanti-choice (spun as “pro-life”) language of “an Evangelical Manifesto” on this culture-war issue: we on the other side are guilty of “assaults” on the unborn. The anti-choice position is political, aimed at legislation forbidding abortion. But the “On Faith” question emphasizes that this group of Evangelicals aims to “depoliticize the term ‘evangelical’”: Some Christian leaders issued “An Evangelical Manifesto” last week [May 7] to depoliticize the term ‘evangelical.’ “We Evangelicals are defined theologically, and not politically, socially or culturally,” they said. In your mind, what is the definition of an evangelical? 1.....I’m an evangelical theologically, but “not politically, socially or culturally.” In other words, I’m not an Evangelical (a capitalization the Manifesto insists on as descriptive of its position). The Manifesto’s subtitle sharpens the drafters’ identity and stance: “The Washington Declaration of Evangelical Identity and Public Commitment.” Their purpose is “to clarify the confusion” about the word “Evangelical” and “to explain where we stand on issues” involving “Evangelicals in public life.” 2.....Admirably, the Manifesto premises, we human beings must learn to live together with “religious differences” that are “ultimate and irreducible” – differences in “personal worldviews” and in “entire ways of
