This collection was compiled by pianist and musicologist, Dr. Helen Walker-Hill. PROCESSING INFORMATION The Helen Walker-Hill Collection was processed with funding provided through a Preservation and Access Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The collection was processed by and this finding aid was created by Margaret Gonsalves in 2006. Additional acquisitions donated in 2008 and 2012 were processed by Laurie Lee Moses in 2014. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Helen Siemens Walker-Hill was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on May 26, 1936 to George and Margaret (Toews) Siemens. Walker-Hill received her early musical training from her mother, Margaret Siemens, and continued piano studies with Emma Endres Kountz in Toledo, Ohio. In 1957 she received a Bachelor of Art degree in Spanish, German, and French languages and literature from the University of Toledo, Ohio. Walker-Hill was a certified secondary teacher in the state of Ohio. From 1957–1958 she was a Fulbright fellow, studied with Nadia Boulanger, and received a Diplome from École Normale de Musique in Paris in 1958.

Allegro Spumante program notes Proclamation | Ernest Bloch Ernest Bloch (born July 24, 1880 in Geneva, Switzerland; died July 15, 1959 in Portland, OR) was a naturalized (1924) American composer, conductor and teacher. His education spanned from Geneva to Brussels, Frankfurt, Munich, and Paris. He moved to the United States in 1916. Bloch was a founding director of the Cleveland Institute of Music (1920-1925) before he moved to become the director of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (1925- 1930). He continued to travel in Europe until World War II opened up negative political sentiments. Bloch was openly Jewish— his publishing trademark was the Star of David with his initials. After Europe essentially closed its doors to him, he settled at the University of California, Berkeley (1940-1952), and earned numerous awards including the Gold Medal in Music from the National Association for American Composers and Conductors. Proclamation (1955) is dedicated to Bloch’s friend Samuel Laderman, who was also Jewish and connected in part to the Chicago Bloch festival in 1950. Bloch was well loved in the North American Jewish community: he was the composer most esteemed by Albert Einstein and received the Frank L.

It is actually quite simple if one has access to the right concepts and patterns. During my years as a high school director I had the opportunity (and necessity) to observe and develop rehearsal techniques that allowed the jazz ensemble at Miami High to achieve the authentic sound that my students so much enjoyed sharing through many venues. However, it was only after my later experiences as a clinician, conference speaker and adjudicator that I actually made an attempt to collate and organize the principles and techniques I (sometimes unconsciously) applied with my students throughout my time as a director. This handout contains some basic principles and rehearsal suggestions that I hope will help any director/student unfamiliar with some of the major styles in this genre (and perhaps those a bit more familiar as well) to begin to teach and explore this infectious brand of music with more vigor and authenticity.
