Captain Brian Walden, Honor Band Conductor Captain Brian O. Walden, a native of Trenton, South Carolina comes to Samford from Marshall University where he was the Director of Bands, Coordinator of Music Education, and Program Coordinator of the Graduate Conducting Program following his 2015 retirement as Commanding Officer and Conductor of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D. C. He has an extensive recording resume’ as a conductor and has commissioned and premiered important works for the wind ensemble medium. He has conducted international recording artists live and for television performances with Neil Patrick Harris and other artists such as Jason Mraz, James Taylor, Colbie Caillat, Take 6, Phillip Phillips (American Idol winner), Isaac Slade of the rock band “The Fray,” Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Branford Marsalis (former Director of The Tonight Show Band with Jay Leno) and many other artists. He has guest-conducted ensembles and performed as a instrumentalist on every continent except Antarctica.

In 2012 he was awarded the Outstanding Alumni Award by the Alumni Council of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. At the time of his retirement from active duty, Captain Walden was the senior musician/conductor in the Department of Defense and President awarded Captain Walden the distinguished Legion of Merit for his 35 years of service to the nation.

Dr. Christopher Chapman, Honor Band Conductor Dr. Christopher Chapman is the Director of Bands for the Central Michigan University School of Music, where he conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and coordinates the wind band conducting area. His ensembles have gained notoriety and praise from composers and audiences alike and have been featured in performance sites from Carnegie Hall to concert halls on the west coast of the United States as well as Japan, and Taiwan. Recent commercial recording projects include: The Five Changes; Currents; and Scenic Meditations with the Oregon State University Wind Ensemble, produced by Mark Records. This year, that ensemble will release David Maslanka's Mass for wind ensemble, full chorus, children's choir, and soloists. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Chapman holds degrees in music from The Ohio State University, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the University of Washington. Dr. Chapman has appeared as a conductor, clinician and lecturer throughout the United States. He has also been a contributing author in A Composer's Insight: Thoughts, Analysis and Commentary on Contemporary Masterpieces for Wind Band, a series of books on contemporary wind band composers for Meredith Music Publications, a subsidiary of the Hal Leonard Corporation and Teaching Music through Performance by GIA Publications. Dr. Chapman's wind band compositions and , published by Timberline Publications, are receiving performances across the United States. In 2015, Dr. Chapman was elected to the prestigious American Bandmasters Association. He has been the Northwest Division president the College Band Directors National Association and Northwest Divisional Chair of the National Band Association. An inductee into the Phi Beta Mu honorary Bandmasters Fraternity, he is also an honorary member of the Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity where he has served as the Co-Governor of the Western District, and an honorary member of the Tau Beta Sigma honorary band sorority. Other organizations include the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, Oregon Band Directors Association, National Association for Music Educators, and Oregon Music Educators Association. Dr. Chapman has also served as the Musical Director of the Oregon Brass Society, a British-style brass band in Springfield, Oregon, the Portland Wind Symphony, a semi-professional adult band in Portland, Oregon, and the Clock Tower Wind Orchestra, a professional concert band.

Mr. James Seda, Honor Band Conductor James O. Seda is currently the Director of Bands at Southwest Dekalb High School. He is a product of the Atlanta Public School System, having graduated from Southside Comprehensive High School. Mr. Seda received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education from Florida A&M University. While there, he studied conducting with Dr. William P. Foster and Dr. Julian E. White. He was also in the trumpet studio of Dr. Marty Robinson. Mr. Seda is currently enrolled in the Masters of Music Education Program at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Illinois.

Mr. Seda has been the Director of Bands at Southwest Dekalb High School since 2001. Prior to that he served as Assistant Director of Bands at Chapel Hill Middle School for two years, the primary feeder school to Southwest Dekalb High School, also assisting with the band program at Southwest Dekalb simultaneously. Mr. Seda is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, The International Trumpet Guild, Georgia Music Educators Association, Music Educators National Conference, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the Screen Actor’s Guild and MACE. Mr. Seda was The STAR Teacher for Southwest Dekalb High School in 2005-2006 and has been recognized and honored by Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers multiple times.

While attending Florida A&M University, Mr. Seda was a very active musician. He held the principal trumpet chair in the FAMU Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, and the lead trumpet chair in the FAMU Jazz Ensemble. As a member of the world famous ‘Marching 100′ Mr. Seda served as trumpet section leader for two years, as well as being elected business manager, vice-president, and president in consecutive years. Mr. Seda has performed in Paris, France, The Montreaux Jazz Festival in Montreaux, Switzerland and the North Seas Jazz Festival in The Haag, Holland. He has also performed in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

Television and radio features are also to his credit as CNN displayed his talents in a television documentary on the life of jazz musician Jesse Stone. He has done studio sessions for television and radio commercials, as well as short films and movies. Mr. Seda also worked on the 20th Century Fox motion picture DRUMLINE as a music arranger, band organizer, instrumentalist, and actor extra. Mr. Seda is active as a trumpet and band clinician and an adjudicator. He is also maintaining an active performance schedule, frequenting the jazz scene throughout the southeastern United States. Music has impacted and molded Mr. Seda’s life, and he feels that he should share and expose his knowledge and experiences with his students so they may have the same opportunities. His educational philosophy is to foster a true understanding and appreciation of music by exposing his students to its many styles, therefore making them competitive and adaptive in any musical situation.

Mr. Jon Bowman, Honor Band Conductor Jon Bowman serves as Director of Bands and Fine Arts Department Chair at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia. While serving as Director of Bands at Lowndes High School the numbers of the Marching Band have grown as high as 480 members while placing emphasis on the concert band programs. Mr. Bowman oversees all aspects of the program, which include the Lowndes High “Georgia Bridgemen” Marching Band, the Lowndes Wind Symphony, the Lowndes Symphonic Band, the Lowndes Concert Band, the Jazz Band, Varsity and Junior Varsity Winter Guards, Percussion Ensemble and the Lowndes Steel Pan Ensemble, “Viking Steel”. During Jon’s tenure as Fine Arts Department Chair he is overseeing the completion of a state of the art Performing Arts Center being built on the campus of Lowndes High School that will be completed in the summer of 2020.

Mr. Bowman previously served as Director of Bands at Prattville High School in Prattville, Alabama. While at Prattville, Mr. Bowman directed the “Pride of Prattville” Marching Band, the Prattville High School Wind Symphony, the Symphonic Band, Concert Band and the Jazz Ensemble. Before his tenure at Prattville High School, Mr. Bowman also served as Director of Bands at Tallassee High School in Tallassee, Alabama and Beauregard High School in Opelika, Alabama where he also served as the assistant baseball coach.

Mr. Bowman is a 2000 graduate of Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, having received a Bachelor of Music Education degree. In 2002, Jon received his Masters of Music Education from Auburn University. While at Auburn University Jon was a member of the Auburn University Marching Band, the Auburn University Symphonic Band, the AU Percussion Ensemble and Steel Drum Band, the Auburn Community Orchestra, the Auburn Concert Choir and a member of the Auburn University Singers. Mr. Bowman has performed with the Columbus Symphony, the LaGrange Symphony and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Jon has performed in many venues in the Southeast, Lincoln Center in New York, New York and several countries in Western Europe.

His professional affiliations include the Georgia Music Educator’s Association, the National Band Association and NAFME. Mr. Bowman is also an Educational Artist for System Blue Brass Instruments.

Jon is married to his beautiful wife Angee and has five children.

Mr. Brandon Poiroux, Honor Band Conductor Brandon Poiroux has been the Director of Bands at Deane Bozeman School since 2009. His responsibilities comprise overseeing all bands on campus from grades 5-12 including the 5th Grade Band, Beginning Band, Intermediate Band, Concert Band, "Heat Wave" Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, and "Sound of Roaring Thunder" Marching Band. Mr. Poiroux holds Bachelor and Master's degrees in Music Education from Troy University. In addition, he will complete an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Liberty University in May of 2020.

Mr. Poiroux has served as a guest clinician and conductor across the Southeast as well as District 2 Chairman of the Florida Bandmasters Association. In addition, he has been awarded the prestigious Florida Bandmasters Association "Tom Bishop" Award, been recognized as a Florida Music Education Association Emerging Leader, and was elected the 2010 Deane Bozeman School Teacher of the Year.

His professional affiliations include Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, National Association For Music Education, Florida Music Educators Association, and the Florida Bandmasters Association. Mr. Poiroux currently resides in Lynn Haven with his wife Crystal and their two sons, Vincent and Maxwell.

Dr. Larry Blocher, Honor Band Conductor Dr. Larry Blocher is Dean of the College of Communication and Fine Arts, Professor of Music and Director of the School of Music at Troy University in Troy, Alabama. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Blocher serves as an associate conductor with the university bands and teaches undergraduate and graduate music education courses. Dr. Blocher served as Associate Director of Bands and Director of Music Education at Wichita State University in Wichita, for 10 years. He received his BME and MM degrees from Morehead State University in Kentucky and his Ph.D. in Music Education from The Florida State University.

Dr. Blocher is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Band Research and the Board of Directors of the National Band Association. He has served on the editorial board of the Music Educators Journal and the Advisory Board to the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. He is a past president of the Kansas Bandmasters Association.

Dr. Blocher has been a guest clinician/conductor/adjudicator in 33 states and 11 countries. His original music for concert band is published by Wingert-Jones. He is a co-principal author of the Teaching Music through Performance in Band series (GIA).

Dr. Mark J. Walker, Honor Band Conductor Dr. Mark J. Walker serves as Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Troy University where he conducts the Troy University Symphony Band, the nationally renowned “Sound of the South” Marching Band, teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting, marching band techniques, measurement and evaluation, and wind literature.

In addition to his teaching duties, Dr. Walker serves as Chairman of the Southeastern United States Clinic and Honor Bands, Executive Director of the Middle School Southeastern United States Band Clinic and Honor Bands, and is the Director of the “Sound of the South” Summer Music Camp and Director’s Clinic. He also serves as Co-Chair of the National Band Association’s Hall of Fame of Distinguished Band Directors. Dr. Walker is a published author, whose articles appear in various music education publications and is the editor of the book The Art of Interpretation of Band Music published by GIA. He is a contributor to The Euphonium Source Book, published by Indiana University Press. Additionally, Dr. Walker is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Band Research.

Bands and students under Dr. Walker’s direction have received many honors at the regional and state level in , where he taught middle school and high school band. In addition, Dr. Walker keeps an active guest conducting and clinic schedule, and has appeared as conductor, clinician and adjudicator in Canada and throughout the United States. Recently, Dr. Walker was a guest conductor with the United States Air Force Band and the United States Navy Band. He conducted the Troy University Symphony Band in the opening concert of the 80th Annual Convention of the American Bandmasters Association. In 2009, Dr. Walker received the honor of conducting both the Royal Hawaiian Band and the Marine Forces Pacific Band, located in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2015 and 2016, Dr. Walker appeared as a guest conductor with the Oregon Symphonic Band and the California State University Long Beach Wind Symphony, respectively at the American Bandmasters Association Convention, as well as the Desert Winds at the 2016 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Conference.

Dr. Walker is an elected member of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, and his past and present professional affiliations include Phi Beta Mu, CBDNA, National Band Association, NAfME, Alabama Music Education Association, Alabama Bandmasters Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Delta Kappa, Tau Beta Sigma, Sigma Alpha Iota, Texas Bandmasters Association, and World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles.

Dr. Walker is married to Jessica Walker, who teaches sixth grade at Goshen Elementary, and resides in Troy with their daughter, Emily.

Dr. John M. Long Director of Bands Emeritus & Distinguished Professor Emeritus

Dr. John M. Long is Distinguished Professor of Music Emeritus at Troy University. He is past president of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, honorary President of the National Band Association and a honorary life member of the American Bandmasters Association. He is active as a guest conductor, speaker, clinician and adjudicator throughout the United States, Europe, Canada and Mexico.

Dr. Long’s Robert E. Lee High School band is the only high school in Alabama listed in the Sousa Foundation’s Roll of Honor of great high school bands before 1960. His Troy University band played for many national conventions including the American Bandmasters Association, the College Band Director’s National Association, and the Music Educator National Association. His marching band has been seen on N.B.C., C.B.S., A.B.C. television and has played for four Presidential inaugurations in Washington, D.C.

In 1977, he was elected to the Alabama Bandmasters Hall of Fame and was the first active bandmaster to be elected. He received the National Kappa Kappa Psi Distinguished Service to Music Award in 1979. In 1984, Dr. Long was selected as the Outstanding Music Educator of the year by the Alabama Music Educators Association; the first person to be so honored, and was also selected for “Who’s Who in America.” In February 1996, he was inducted into the National Band Association’s Hall of Fame of Distinguished Band conductors, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed on an American bandmaster. In December 1998, he was awarded the Sudler Gold Medal of Honor, which is the highest honor given by the Sousa Foundation. In the same year the Blue-Gray Association dedicated the nationally televised football game to him for 42 years of service as halftime director.

In 2000, he received the Academy of Winds and Percussion Arts Award (AWAPA) from the National Band Association. In 2003, he was given the Governors’ Award by the Alabama Council of the Arts for his contributions to band music. He is the only band director ever given this award.

In 2005, Dr. Long was honored by the Alabama Music Educators Association with the organization’s annual Barbara Odom Leadership Service Award. In the same year, he was honored with the Al G. Wright Award, a national award of distinction presented by the Women Band Directors International. Dr. Long has served as President of the Troy Chamber of Commerce, President of the School Board, President of the Rotary Club and was past Commander of Post 96, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Montgomery, Alabama. He also served twenty four years on the Alabama Historical Commission. He is very honored to be included on both lists in the historical book, Troy 1838 - 2006, by Bill Rice, Sr., as one of the twenty eight most famous people and one of the twenty eight most influential people who has ever lived in Troy.

On March 22, 2012 the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. presented Dr. Long with the Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award, as one of the top ten teachers in the United States. Each teacher received a $10,000 cash award and he was the only one in the field of music, as the other nine were in other academic fields selected from elementary, high school and college teachers. Troy University has two buildings named for Dr. Long, and in 1998, the Troy University Board of Trustees renamed the School of Music the “John M. Long School of Music.”

In 2007 Dr. Long was elected to the Alabama Music Educators Hall of Fame which is the fifth Hall of Fame he has been elected to. In 2009 he received Scouting’s highest honor, the Golden Eagle Award and he is also a distinguished Eagle Scout.

In 2011 C.B.S. National news with Scott Pelley featured Dr. Long’s long career as an outstanding band director. , reporter, visited Troy to interview former students and highlight his over fifty years of teaching and organizing the Southeast Alabama Community Band. This segment was aired several times on the national news and “Good Morning America” program.

The Alabama Sports Foundation presented their 2013 “Healing Hands Award” to Dr. Long at their opening ceremonies of the statewide televised games.

On March 28, 2014 the new nine million dollar “John Maloy Long” building was dedicated. At this time the City of Troy announced a street had been named “Dr. John M. Long Avenue”.

Dr. Long is married to Mary Lynn for sixty-four years and they have two children, one granddaughter and two great grandsons.
