The Fountain April 2021 THE FOUNTAIN The Parish Magazine serving the communities of the Fountains Group, Aldfield Sawley & Winksley (Fountains Parish), Azerley, Dallowgill, Galphay, Grantley, Grewelthorpe, Kirkby Malzeard, Laverton, Mickley & Studley 50p The Rectory Kirkby Malzeard, Ripon HG4 3SL Dear Friends What response does “Easter” get from you? Those who are working might heave a sigh of relief at the thought of a few days’ holiday. We may feel guilty because (despite the lockdowns) we haven’t started the DIY/gardening we meant to do last Easter, or we may start drooling at the thought of all that chocolate. Those who love Jesus will also be humbled at the thought of his Good Friday sacrifice and uplifted at the glories of his resurrection on Easter Sunday. It’s interesting to look at people’s reactions to the resurrection which are recorded in the four gospels. They may not all be quite what we expect. Different disciples were: afraid yet filled with joy (according to Matthew’s gospel) full of fear, trembling and bewilderment (Mark) disbelieving, mixed with joy and amazement (Luke) overjoyed and worshipping (John) What NO ONE was, was apathetic. If someone has been publicly executed and sealed in a tomb, yet then appears in indisputably live form – physically 1 alive, but mysteriously changed in ways that are more than physical – apathy just isn’t a runner. Everyone who heard about the resurrection had a strong reaction. Let’s make sure, among the chocolates, eggs and holiday weekend tasks, that we don’t slide into apathy about the very central fact of the whole affair. Whatever our gut feeling, let’s take it seriously and follow through this huge claim, which affects all human history and all our lives. Jesus, raised from the dead, makes a difference to the good times of life, the bad times, our strengths and our sicknesses, our hopes and fears, and every second of the future we can and cannot see. Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia! Ian Kitchen A verse to think about “Do not be afraid. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.” words of Jesus in Revelation 1:17-18 (New International Version) If you’re reading this copy of the Fountain online, why not check with your less internet-based neighbours if they would like to see it or have it printed for them? Church of England Services in Fountains Benefice April 2021 We have received no further guidance, since the government’s announcements of February 22nd, about the possible relaxation of coronavirus rules relating to church services, so we continue for now on a similar basis to the past few months. Please keep an eye open for posters, social media posts and the like which may contain alterations. Services in Holy Week and Easter Services held by Zoom – contact Ian Kitchen for the link to share in these: 2 Maundy Thursday, 1st April 7.30 pm ‘The start of a long night’ – We will see a short film tracing Jesus’ movements from the Last Supper, along the Kidron Valley to Gethsemane, with some input from New Testament specialist Dr Peter Walker, followed by Bible thoughts and prayer activities. Good Friday, 2nd April 10.30 am Stations of the Cross, using words, pictures and silence to trace the journey leading to Jesus’ crucifixion. 3.00 pm ‘the Last Hour’: readings and reflections from St John’s account of the crucifixion. Easter Morning, 4th April 10.00 am Our usual Sunday Zoom service will celebrate the joy and freedom brought by Jesus’ resurrection Services in Church (face coverings currently obligatory) Easter Morning, 4th April We will be holding short, said services of Holy Communion (sharing the bread only) at 6.00 am at the Chapel of the Resurrection, Dallowgill (we won’t be able to include all the elements of this service which have happened in previous years, but it will be a special way to begin our Easter celebration) 9.00 am at Aldfield Church 11.15 am at Grewelthorpe and Kirkby Malzeard Churches 12.00 noon at Winksley Church Services in Church in the rest of April Sunday 11 April 11.15 am Holy Communion at Sawley Church Sunday 18 April 11.15 am Holy Communion at Winksley Church 3 Sunday 25 April 6.00 pm Evening Prayer at Kirkby Malzeard Church We also continue our Sunday morning Zoom services (and other services at home) at 10 am – please contact Revd. Ian Kitchen on 01765 650369 if you would like to join us, or email [email protected] If you are not computer-savvy or you'd rather follow a service on your own we can let you have it via email or by paper through your letter box. A healthy number of people are doing this at 10 am each week to build the sense that we are all worshipping together. Email or telephone Ian for more details. Holy Communion at home is available for those who have an urgent need. If you have any questions about the services please contact Ian. Kirkby Malzeard verger and sexton After many decades of sterling service, often going way beyond the call of duty, Chris Slater has stepped down from his roles as verger and sexton. We are so very grateful for all that Chris has done in so many ways to look after the building and keep the life of the church flourishing. Sadly, we are constrained at the moment by the coronavirus restrictions, but we intend to show our appreciation to Chris in suitable ways when we are able to gather and mingle properly again. In the meantime, our best wishes go to Chris and Mary and, once again – Thank you so much! A listening ear from the hospice Even with the prospect of slowly exiting lockdown, many of us may be feeling low, isolated or anxious about the days and weeks to come. We want to let you know that our Just ‘B’ Hear to Help community line is here for you, seven days a week, from 8am in the morning to 8pm, with a team of experienced, caring volunteers ready to listen and support. Call us on 01423 856799. We’re all in this together and no concern is too small. The helpline is available for children, young people and adults across Yorkshire. The Just ‘B’ Hear to Help line is one of the services provided by North Yorkshire Hospice Care, a registered charity in England and Wales (518905) with a family of services operating as Herriot Hospice Homecare, Just ‘B’, Saint Michael’s Hospice and Talking Spaces. 4 Oberammergau Passion Play A Ripon Deanery Holiday to Austria and Oberammergau including the famous Passion Play: 3-10 June 2022 — This trip, which was postponed from last year, still has some spaces available. It is being led by Canon Michael Glanville-Smith, assisted by Canon Richard Cooper, two well-known and highly respected retired clergy who have long associations with the deanery. Richard was at one time vicar of Boroughbridge and Michael was Senior Residentiary Canon and Acting Dean at the cathedral. Both live in Ripon. Richard is acting as Tour Administrator and will be able to answer questions from anyone who may be interested. He is happy to be contacted at [email protected] or on 01765 600769. The Benefice Book Group This month we have been reading "The Black House" the first of a trilogy set on the Isle of Lewis by Peter May. We all thought that it was a good read with lots to like and much to provoke discussion - which we are not of course able to have face to face at the moment, although things do seem to be moving in the right direction. The descriptions of the Island and the Islanders are evocative and lively and the main characters are credible and convincing although not always likeable. We cared enough about them, however to want to understand them and to know what happened to them and why and so we read on. Although abuse of various kinds, violence and drug related problems are essential elements of the plot some of us thought that the author was tempted to dwell on 5 them with more detail than was strictly necessary. All in all, however, we agreed that we would be interested in reading the next two books in the trilogy. In March we will be reading "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" by Muriel Spark and we all have our fingers crossed that we may be able to meet face to socially distanced face. Anne Carrick Pyjama Preaching with Adrian Roberts This is a YouTube channel consisting of brief and informal talks on the Bible by Adrian Roberts. It goes out every Sunday, and follows the Anglican lectionary. You can access it by typing 'pyjama preaching adrian roberts' into YouTube. Aldfield Easter at St Lawrence’s We are delighted that socially distanced Services will resume in April. It seems the right time now that the infection rate has decreased and the vaccination process well underway. David and I are busy painting the gate and external lamp. Also re-varnishing the door so that it’s spruced up for Easter. There will be flowers in the church and David will play the organ before and after Services. It will be a welcome boost to moral after a long cold Winter and lockdown. We welcome to the church all who feel able to attend. A Happy Easter.

Case No. 18/01726/OUT Item No.05 Location: Land Comprising OS Field 5419 Galphay Road Kirkby Malzeard Proposal: Outline application for the erection of 2 no. dwellings with access considered Applicant: Mr & Mrs M Atkinson Access to the case file on Public Access can be found here:- view file Reason for report: This application is to be presented to the Planning Committee because the applicant is Councillor Atkinson SUMMARY The application site comprises an agricultural field outside of the village confines of Kirkby Malzeard. The proposal represents the expansion of Kirkby Malzeard into the open countryside in a way which would be detrimental to the protected landscape of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The modest contribution that two dwellings would make to the Council’s housing target would not outweigh the significant and demonstrable adverse impact the development would have on the landscape character and natural beauty of the countryside.
