Avoid risk areas in thunder storms and be prepared for all different weather eventualities. Take care in strong winds and on wet surfaces. STUDY YOUR ROUTE CAREFULLY BEFORE SETTING OUT. Always know where you are on the map. Judge your pace and progress accordingly. Obey road signs and take care on narrow roads. HAVE A WELL PREPARED SADDLEBAG. Pack enough water for the day (2 litres + per person, more in hot weather). Have a small FIRST AID kit to hand. Be prepared for cold, windy and stormy weather, as well as sun and heat. Insurance Before you embark on this holiday you must be fully insured. You should always have your insurance details and their emergency number at hand should you need to con- tact them. Mobile Phones & Coverage In remote areas, there are still zones where there is little or no coverage. We ask you to supply us with a mobile phone number should we need to contact you whilst on the terrain. Page 4 General Information Your Cycling Holiday Map Reading The routes in general are well easy to follow; a useful application is IphiGeNie which shows IGN topographic maps and localised GPS positioning. Cash & Cards Please have enough cash on you for the more rural areas where bank cards are not accepted. There are cash machines in larger towns only. Page 5 Food & Drink As with Corsica itself, the island's cuisine is best described as somewhere between French and Italian but there are also many aspects which are distinctly Corsican. The earthy style of hearty food takes its inspiration from the land, with sun-loving fruits and vegetables, charcuterie and cheeses. Dietary Requirements We have informed all accommodations and restaurants of any special dietary re- quirements you may have but we suggest you do remind them on arrival. Please note Vegetarian, Gluten & Lactose free options will be limited in smaller villages. Breakfasts Breakfast is served from 8h00 onwards, if you need to get away early you should con- firm the time of breakfast the night before with your hotel. Breakfast is generally simple and continental with French bread, croissant, jams, butter and a hot drink eg. strong black coffee. Evening Meals Where included, your Half Board Evening Meal is normally a 3 course affair, with normally soup or charcuterie as a starter, a local main course, cheeses, and / or des- sert. The evening meal is generally served from 19h30 /20h00 onwards. Evening meals may be taken in local restaurants a short walk away. Please note drinks are not included with the meal and should be paid for locally. Meat Dishes Wild boar is possibly the island's most celebrated dish - look out for Sanglier on the menu. Pork is common as pigs are bred throughout Corsica. Meat dishes may be served with pasta or polenta, made of chestnut flour. A lot of the dishes are stews. Other dishes you may see • Veau aux olives – pink Veal with local olives in a thick tomato stew • Cabri de lait – roasted young goat / kid Page 6 Fish Dishes In the mountains you’ll find mountain trout on menus. On the coast you will find a good selection of fish and seafood although prices can be fairly high in harbour side restaurants. Look out for red mullet (rouget), sea bream (loup de mer) and crayfish (langoustine). Cheese Much of the mountain cuisine is based around the locally produced dairy products and in particular ewe's cheese which is similar to goat's cheese. Local cheeses are varied and you will find locally made cheese in most of the moun- tain villages, occasionally served with fig jam. Brocciu is a Corsican whey cheese much like ricotta. Charcuterie Cured meats are very popular and a wide selection is usually available on Cor- sican menus. Lonzu & Coppa similar but are made from different parts of the pig, Lonzu is leaner. Prisuttu - Corsica dried ham. Figatellu – a long liver sausage, served grilled. Desserts Traditional Corsican desserts are generally milk or egg based or “à la Chataigne” – made with chestnuts Fiadone - soft brocciu cheese and lemon tart. Beignets - chestnut flour doughnuts, sometimes stuffed with brocciu cheese. Picnics Picnics are generally not included and you can purchase provisions from the village shops. Shops are generally open from 8h30 – 12h00 then from 14h00 – 18h30 some- times staying open later in the summer months. On Sundays and Monday mornings shops could be closed, if in doubt, you should buy supplies the night before and ask at your hotel for the local opening times. Page 7 Snack Food We advise you to have a stock of snack food with you, for extra energy along the way. Corsican Wine & Beers Corsica produces several very good wines, which are only recently known outside the island. The grape harvest is still often cut by hand and also there are a number of BIO or organic wines. James Boswell was an aficionado, writing in his Tour of Corsica published in 1782: "The flavours of wines differ all over the island. It is a true marvel that such a slight difference in soil and exposure generates such considerable diversity." Some wines are made with traditional Corsican varieties of grape, such as the deli- cious white Vermentino, Nielluccio, the basis of the esteemed Patrimonio red, and several excellent rosé wines. As a quick guide, wines from Patrimonio (Clos Teddi, Orenga de Gaffroy, etc), Calvi (Alzipratu, Landry, etc), Ajaccio (Peraldi, Abbatucci) and from near Sartène (San Michele, Saparale) are outstanding. Also worth tasting are the local fortified wines, such as Muscat made from the delicious pale Muscat grape, or the darker, thick and sweetish herb-rich Cap Corse. Home-produced, dusky coloured, high alcohol “diges- tif” drinks made with flavours of herbs such as myrtle, may be offered at the end of the meal. There are three brands of beer produced in Corsica, Pietra has a range of beers which include chestnuts among their ingredients, Serena and Colomba, are ‘German style’ wheat beers. Page 8 A little bit about Corsica... History When you arrive you will be instantly aware of the differences between the island and mainland France. The Corsicans are a people rich in traditions, proud, hospitable and generous and away from the busier coastal towns you will find a way of life that is authentically Corsican. Brimming with history, the earliest evidence of Neolithic human inhabitation of the island comes in the form of ‘Dame de Bonifacio’ human remains dating back to 6570 BC. Corsica is also home to many standing stones and dolmens, traces of the Tor- réens, a Bronze age people who lived here around 2000 BC. Corsica has also preserved the memories of the many nations who conquered the island - a truly European saga that includes the Greeks, Romans, Vandals and Ge- noese and Papal armies.

    West Coast From the famous Calanches de Piana until the bay of Calvi, walking along the coastline of Corsica's Regional park This hike sets o# from the calanques of Piano near Calvi, the coastal side of the regional park of Corsica. It follows the most beautiful stages of the Mare e Monti but also incorporates other interesting paths. The hike includes crossing the gulf of Porto and the Scandola nature reserve, which is classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Each day provides a new source of amazement. As the route is between the sea and mountains, this hike o#ers a wide variety of countryside: the famous sculptured rocks known as the calanches of Piana, paths zigzagging through the Corsican maquis and crossing former chestnut plantations, the chemin des douaniers (literally the customs path), which follows the ragged coastline of Corsica. Furthermore, your evenings will be spent in charming Corsican villages such as Piana and Ota where the houses made of red granite create an exceptional sight. The highpoint of the trip is arriving in Calvi; pottering around the cobbled streets of the citadel is a must. In spring, you will be delighted by the smells and the flowering of the maquis. In autumn, you will be dazzled by the lights. And for those seeking pleasure, there is the possibility to swim in the sea every day. Level of di&culty The walks are on good footpaths and trails, the terrain is varied but often rocky. You need to be used to walking and take regular exercise to enjoy this holiday.

    Study of the Presumed Cranium of Sampiero Corso (1488-1567) Gérard Lucotte1, Stephan Borensztajn2, Raoul Perrot3 1Institute of Molecular Anthropology, Paris, France 2Institute of Physics of the Globe, Paris, France 3Laboratory of Anatomical Anthropology and Paleopathology, Lyon, France Abstract: We have studied by classic anatomical methods the presumed cranium of Sampiero Corso (1498-1567), who was the first Corsican nationalist. This cranium corresponds to that of a male individual, aged at least of 50 years ; there are many similarities between the cranium face and the one that corresponds to his portrait. The vertical fracture, observed on the cranium left side of the forehead, corresponds probably to the stab sword that caused Sampiero Corso’s death. The 14C radiodating of a bone fragment located at the cranium basis gives a calendar 1450-1510 years interval (at 95% of probability) of age. He is, with Napoléon Ier and Pascal Paoli, one of the famous Corsican and is generally considered as the first Corsican nationalist. He was ambushed and decapitated by rival Corsican mercenaries (who was a member of his own family) on the 17th of January 1567. His head was exposed on the ramparts of Ajaccio and his cranium was kept later on (for more than forty years) in a wall of the Santa Barbara (in Cauro, Corsica) church.

    Christian Allies of the Ottoman Empire by Emrah Safa Gürkan The relationship between the Ottomans and the Christians did not evolve around continuous hostility and conflict, as is generally assumed. The Ottomans employed Christians extensively, used Western know-how and technology, and en- couraged European merchants to trade in the Levant. On the state level, too, what dictated international diplomacy was not the religious factors, but rather rational strategies that were the results of carefully calculated priorities, for in- stance, several alliances between the Ottomans and the Christian states. All this cooperation blurred the cultural bound- aries and facilitated the flow of people, ideas, technologies and goods from one civilization to another. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Introduction 2. Notes Citation Introduction Cooperation between the Ottomans and various Christian groups and individuals started as early as the beginning of the 14th century, when the Ottoman state itself emerged. The Ottomans, although a Muslim polity, did not hesitate to cooperate with Christians for practical reasons. Nevertheless, the misreading of the Ghaza (Holy War) literature1 and the consequent romanticization of the Ottomans' struggle in carrying the banner of Islam conceal the true nature of rela- tions between Muslims and Christians. Rather than an inevitable conflict, what prevailed was cooperation in which cul- tural, ethnic, and religious boundaries seemed to disappear. Ÿ1 The Ottomans came into contact and allied themselves with Christians on two levels. Firstly, Christian allies of the Ot- tomans were individuals; the Ottomans employed a number of Christians in their service, mostly, but not always, after they had converted.

Scott Rutherford University of Washington Abstract Publishing information about a transit agency’s stops, routes, schedules, and status in a variety of formats and delivery methods is an essential part of improving the usabil- ity of a transit system and the satisfaction of a system’s riders. A key staple of most transit traveler information systems is the trip planner, a tool that serves travelers well if the both origin and destination are known. However, sometimes the availabil- ity of transit at a location is more important than the actual destination. Given this premise, we developed an Attractions Search Tool to make use of an underlying trip planner to search online databases of local restaurants, shopping, parks and other amenities based on transit availability from the user’s origin. The ability to perform such a search by attraction type rather than specific destination can be a powerful aid to a traveler with a need or desire to use public transportation. Background Publishing information about a transit agency’s stops, routes, schedules, and status in a variety of formats and delivery methods is an essential part of improving the ease of use of a transit system and the satisfaction of a system’s riders. No longer the domain of just simple printed schedules, transit traveler information systems have grown to include route maps and timetables, trip planners, real-time track- ers, service alerts, and others tools made available across cell phones, web brows- ers, and new Internet devices as driven by rider demand (Multisystems 2003).
