Before our eyes, we see stadia being built; we see roads and airports being upgraded; and a range of other legacies - in arts and culture, in football develop- ment, in tourism infrastructure - which will remain with us long after the fi nal whistle. No one doubts we will be ready to give the world a won- derful African World Cup. The fi rst in history! Part of the task of Provincial government is to ensure that as many people in the Western Cape as possible will “touch the World Cup” - and this FanJol news is just one of the ways in which we want to bring the excitement of the tournament closer to you. The intention of this newspaper is to provide football fans and the general public throughout the Western Cape with a range of interest- ing and useful facts, fi gures and stories in the run-up to the Confederations Cup in June this year and for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The Province has a mandate to enable as many people as possible to “Touch the World Cup”. We are already doing that through a range of projects, such as Street Football; our Football Ambassadors running coaching clinics and appearing at major events; the “Stars in their Eyes” international exchange programme with the Netherlands; Football development and coaching clinics. In the run-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, we will have 175 activation events to be held throughout the Province, in every municipality. Also keep a look out for the numerous Fanjols which will be taking place in your area, where you can experience the excitement and thrill of big matches on the big screen in a fun-fi lled and safe environment. Fanjols will have extensive programmes for kids, cultural performances and a range of other fun-fi lled and educational activities, in addition to the matches being screened. Finally, so that everyone, even those without tickets to the stadium or too far from Cape Town can experience the tournament, the Province will be hosting Fanjols during the tournament in each of the fi ve Municipal Districts. These are just some of the ways that we will be enabling you to “Touch the World Cup”. Aaron Mokoena Born 25 November 1980 in Johannesburg The current South African captain plays for English Premier League side Blackburn Rovers as a defender or midfi elder. Known as Mbazo or The Axe, Aaron became the youngest ever player to have represented South Africa when he made his international debut at the age of 17 in 1999. In January 2008, Mokoena captained the South African side in the African Nations Cup. TOUCHING THE 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP Printed on environmentally friendly paper 3 Opening words HOW THE WORKS Fanjol is a GIANT TV SCREEN public viewing area for Afans to enjoy the atmosphere of a live sports game with fellow supporters. These public viewing areas are aimed at fans who are not near to stadiums or cannot get tickets to the big games. Fanjols are sponsored by the 2010 World Cup Unit of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, as part of an education programme in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The sports events screened at Fanjols in the run-up to the Confederations Cup and after it, will give spectators and soccer supporters a good idea about what to expect during the Confederations Cup and the World Cup. A TYPICAL FANJOL INCLUDES: Coaching Clinic: Each Fanjol runs a coaching clinic prior to the start of the big match. This involves kids of all ages and encourages them to play the sport and to develop their skills. Kidz Zone: We have an area especially for the younger kids (who must be accompanied to the Fanjol by an adult), where we erect jumping castles and slippy slides and ensure the children are supervised in a safe environment. Bar Zone: A wide variety of drinks including beer; coolers; wine and spirits are available at the bar zone. ACTSA has long been campaigning for democracy in Africa’s only absolute monarchy, and on page six we look at how a decline in rights and democracy in the country is compounded by a growing economic crisis.     Release list of up to 30 players Each association’s release list of up to 30 players was received by 11 May 2010 as per article 26 of the Regulations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. Mandatory rest period for players on the release list is from 17-23 May 2010 (except players involved in the UEFA Champions League final on 22 May). Each association must send FIFA a final list of no more than 23 players by 24.00 CET on 1 June 2010. Final list is limited to players on the release list submitted on 11 May 2010. Final list of 23 players will be published on FIFA.com at 12.00 CET on 4 June. Injured players may be replaced up to 24 hours before a team’s first match. Replacement players are not limited to the release list of up to 30 players.     SPORT & RECREATION 257 Pocket Guide to South Africa 2011/12 SPORT & RECREATION Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) is the national department responsible for sport in South Africa. Aligned with its vision of An Active and Winning Nation, its primary focuses are on providing opportunities for all South Africans to participate in sport; managing the regulatory framework; and providing funding for different codes of sport. The SRSA has a number of flagship programmes through which it implements its objectives. These programmes touch the lives of millions of South Africans, from schoolchildren participating in school sport, communities sharing in the benefits of mass participation pro- grammes and events, and organisations benefiting from the SRSA’s financial and logistical support. Initiatives Golden Games The 2011 Golden Games, part of the SRSA’s Older Persons Programme, were held in the Free State in October 2011 with the theme Celebrating Active Ageing. The Golden Games is a national event where persons older than 65 compete in various sporting codes at provincial level. Codes that form part of the Golden Games include soccer, athletics (800 m and 4x100-m relay), brisk walk, duck walk, passing the ball, rugbyball throw, jukskei and goal shooting. The Western Cape was crowned the 2011 Golden Games champion. All-Africa Games The 10th All-Africa Games took place in September 2011 in Maputo, Mozambique, and featured 20 sporting disciplines in which 53 countries participated. Events for people with disabilities also featured in swimming and athletics. Team South Africa finished first on the medals table, with 62 gold medals, 55 silver and 40 bronze, totalling 157 medals.
