'~ '· APOLLO 14 STATUS REPORT Apollo 14 astronaut crew activities include physical examination at MSC, guidance and navigation system briefing, contingency (one-man) EVA simulation on January 5; lunar descent flight simulations with flight controller participation on January 6; lunar orbit and descent orbit insertion simulations with the flight controllers on January 7; EVA simulation with the flight controllers on January 8; and press interviews on January 9 at MSC Hypergolic propellants-- those which ignite spontaneously when the fuel and oxydizer meet-- will be loaded in the Apollo 14 spacecraft and in the auxiliary propulsion system of the Saturn third stage from January 4 to 8. Then RP-1 fuel will be loaded aboard the Saturn V first stage on January 9. Also during the week, spacecraft pyrotechnics will be installed, Saturn first stage engines will be leak-checked. and flight stowage of the modularized equipment stowage assembly in the lunar module descent stage will be accomplished. Preparations of the Apollo 14 space vehicle continue to proceed satisfactorily for a scheduled launching January 31 from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39. Fifteen potential Skylab astronauts are scheduled to visit Sacramento Peak Observatory, Sunspot. New Mexico for solar telescope training on January ' and 7. The second stage for the 13th Saturn V rocket departed the NASA Mississippi Test Facility December 30 aboard the barge Poseidon for the Kennedy Space Center. The stage is scheduled to arrive January 5 and go into temporary storage in the VAB The stage is planned for use in the Skylab program as part of the Saturn V rocket to place the orbital workshop into Earth orbit in late 1972. -

Dear Parent, Hope you are well, As part of our Science and Technology Week, we are pleased to inform you that we will be hosting special events and activities for all students. One of the highlighted activities is a visit by a special guest speaker, Astronaut Nicole Stott. Nicole Stott is an American engineer and a retired NASA astronaut. She worked for NASA for 27 years in various positions and is one of very few women who conducted a spacewalk. Astronaut Stott served as a Flight Engineer on ISS Expedition 20 and Expedition 21 and was a Mission Specialist on STS-128 and STS-133. Please find attached her biography which denotes her very impressive career as an engineer, astronaut and director of missions. Nicole is the first person to tweet from space, and is an artist who has created several paintings while in space. She represents a perfect example of why we believe art must be integrated into the world of STEM to inspire creativity and innovation. This celebrated astronaut will be interacting with all of our students virtually starting May 3rd until May 6th 2020. National Aeronautics and Space Administration Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center Houston, Texas 77058 April 2021 E. Michael Fincke (Colonel, U.S. Air Force, Ret.) NASA Astronaut Summary: E. Michael Fincke was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1996. The Pennsylvania native is the veteran of three spaceflights, Expedition 9 in 2004, Expedition 18 in 2009, and STS-134 in 2011. For Expedition 9, Fincke served as Science Officer and Flight Engineer during his six-month stay onboard the International Space Station. While there, he performed four spacewalks. For Expedition 18, Fincke served as Commander, where he and his crew prepared the station for future six-person crews. For STS-134, he served as Mission Specialist and completed three spacewalks. Col. Fincke has logged more than a year in orbit, with nine space walks. After working with NASA’s Commercial Crew Program to develop and bring two new crewed spacecraft online, the Space-X Crew Dragon and the Boeing CST-100 Starliner, Fincke was selected to serve as the Joint Operations Commander on the first crewed experimental test flight of the Starliner. Riding on the Atlas V launch vehicle, this will be Mike’s third rocket and spacecraft combination to orbit. He is currently preparing for his fourth spaceflight, scheduled to launch to the International Space Station later this year. Personal Data: Born March 14, 1967, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but considers Emsworth, Pennsylvania, to be his hometown. Married to the former Renita Saikia of Houston, Texas. They have three children. In addition to time with his family, Col. Fincke enjoys travel, geology, astronomy, learning new languages and reading. -

NASA JOHNSON SPACE CENTER ORAL HISTORY PROJECT ORAL HISTORY TRANSCRIPT VANCE D. BRAND INTERVIEWED BY REBECCA WRIGHT HOUSTON, TEXAS – 25 JULY 2000 WRIGHT: Today is July 25th, the year 2000. This oral history is being conducted with Vance Brand at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The interviewer is Rebecca Wright with the Johnson Space Center Oral History Project. Thank you again, Mr. Brand, for visiting with us today. In 1975, on July 15th, there was a historic moment in space when the two world superpowers for space exploration came together. You were very much a part of that. We’d like to visit with you about that role today. Could you tell us when you first became aware that the United States and USSR [Union of Soviet Socialist Republics] were going to have this mission, and what your thoughts were at that time when you heard about this never-before mission being planned? BRAND: Well, the agreement to have the mission was made between President [Richard M.] Nixon and [Soviet Premier Alexei N.] Kosygin of the Soviet Union in 1971. So sometime shortly after that, I became aware that there would be such a mission. I became increasingly aware because people like [Vladimir A.] Shatalov, [Alexei S.] Yeliseyev, senior cosmonauts from the then Soviet Union, came over. They looked at our facilities and met us. They were taken out to ranches nearby. Of course, this was in the middle of the Cold War, and there was a lot of tension between the Soviet Union and the United States, so this was all a very unique sort of thing. -

Dr. Sandra H. Magnus Executive Director American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Dr. Sandra H. “Sandy” Magnus is the Executive Director of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the world’s largest technical society dedicated to the global aerospace profession. Born and raised in Belleville, Ill., Dr. Magnus attended the Missouri University of Science and Technology, graduating in 1986 with a degree in physics and in 1990 with a master’s degree in electrical engineering. She also holds a Ph.D. from the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech (1996). Selected to the NASA Astronaut Corps in April, 1996, Dr. Magnus flew in space on the STS-112 shuttle mission in 2002, and on the final shuttle flight, STS-135, in 2011. In addition, she flew to the International Space Station on STS-126 in November 2008, served as flight engineer and science officer on Expedition 18, and returned home on STS-119 after four and a half months on board. Following her assignment on Station, she served at NASA Headquarters in the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate. Her last duty at NASA, after STS-135, was as the deputy chief of the Astronaut Office. While at NASA, Dr. Magnus worked extensively with the international community, including the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), as well as with Brazil on facility-type payloads. She also spent time in Russia developing and integrating operational products and procedures for the International Space Station. Before joining NASA, Dr. Magnus worked for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company from 1986 to 1991, as a stealth engineer. -
Testing of the Z-2 Space Suit at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory

Meginnis,1 Richard A. Rhodes,2 Kristine N. Larson,3 and Amy J. Ross4 NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX, 77058 The Z-2 space suit is the product of the last fifty years of NASA’s space suit research and testing experience. The Z-2 suit was originally developed as an exploration space suit for use on a planetary surface, such as the moon or Mars. However, Z-2 could also be used in microgravity at the International Space Station (ISS) to supplement or replace the existing extravehicular mobility unit (EMU). To evaluate the microgravity performance of Z-2 for compatibility at the ISS, the suit was tested in NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL), which is the primary simulated microgravity testing environment for space suits. Seven test subjects, including five astronauts, performed various tasks that are representative of the tasks performed at the ISS. Test subjects performed tasks in the Z-2 suit and the EMU so that relative comparisons could be drawn between the two suits. Two configurations of the Z-2 space suit were evaluated during this test series: the EMU lower torso assembly (ELTA) configuration and the Z-2 lower torso assembly (ZLTA) configuration. The ELTA configuration, which was the primary test configuration, is comprised of the Z-2 upper torso and the EMU lower torso. The ZLTA configuration is comprised of the Z-2 upper torso and the Z-2 lower torso, which contains additional mobility elements. -

Three decades ago, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, I met the first man to walk in space. As a broadcaster, I was, at that time, a member of the on-air crew of Boston's Kiss 108 morning radio show. Entering the studio, I was greeted by the show's producer, Rocky (the late Richard "Rocky" Buono), who informed me that Russian hero and cosmonaut, Alexei Leonov, was set to visit our studio that day. Rocky knew that I was a lifelong space enthusiast who would be thrilled to meet General Leonov, and he had purposely not let me know in advance, as he had wanted this space legend's visit to be a surprise. It was a surprise, all right. For some inexplicable reason, earlier that morning, while dressing for work, I had abandoned my nearly-constant wardrobe of plain black clothing, and had chosen to wear a bold red, white and blue outfit that had been presented to me at a radio promotion. I looked, said Rocky, "like a walking American flag" on the day that a Russian icon would be visiting us. For the radio crew, my uncharacteristic fashion choice was a source of general hilarity. For me, it was a nightmare. As a proud American, I respect others who feel pride in their own nation, and would never wish to signal otherwise. I was about to meet a Russian hero... and I was concerned that my loud red, white and blue outfit might, inadvertently, send an unwelcoming message to a great man for whom I held tremendous admiration.
