Klaus Crew performance, including both accommodation and utilization factors, is an integral part of every human spaceflight mission from commercial space tourism, to the demanding journey to Mars and beyond. Spacecraft were historically built by engineers and technologists trying to adapt the vehicle into cutting edge rocketry with the assumption that the astronauts could be trained and will adapt to the design. By and large, that is still the current state of the art. It is recognized, however, that poor human-machine design integration can lead to catastrophic and deadly mishaps. -

Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas 77058 In support of the Space Shuttle Program, as well as NASA’s other human space flight programs, the Mission Operations Directorate (MOD) at the Johnson Space Center has become the world leader in human spaceflight operations. From the earliest programs - Mercury, Gemini, Apollo - through Skylab, Shuttle, ISS, and our Exploration initiatives, MOD and its predecessors have pioneered ops concepts and emphasized a history of mission leadership which has added value, maximized mission success, and built on continual improvement of the capabilities to become more efficient and effective. MOD’s focus on building and contributing value with diverse teams has been key to their successes both with the US space industry and the broader international community. Since their beginning, MOD has consistently demonstrated their ability to evolve and respond to an ever changing environment, effectively prepare for the expected and successfully respond to the unexpected, and develop leaders, expertise, and a culture that has led to mission and Program success. MOD Background To better understand the evolution and successes of MOD during the Shuttle program, one must first understand the MOD’s current roles and responsibilities. MOD’s responsibilities traditionally fall into four categories: flight design and planning, crew and flight controller training, real-time flight execution, and facility operations. -
New Pad Constructed for Smaller Rocket Launches
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS • JULY 2015 At NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Ground Systems Development and Operations (GSDO) Program Office is leading the center’s transfor- mation from a historically government-only launch complex to a spaceport bustling with activity involving government and commercial vehicles alike. GSDO is tasked with developing and using the complex equipment required to safely handle a variety of rockets and spacecraft during assembly, transport and launch. New Pad Constructed for Smaller Rocket Launches NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida took another step forward in its transformation to a 21st century multi-user spaceport with the completion of the new Small Class Vehicle Launch Pad, designated 39C, in the Launch Pad 39B area. This designated pad to test smaller rockets will make it more affordable for smaller aerospace companies to develop and launch from the center, and to break into the commercial spaceflight market. Kennedy Director Bob Cabana and representatives from the Ground Systems Development and Operations (GSDO) Program and the Center Planning and Development (CPD) and Engineering Directorates marked the completion of the new pad during a ribbon-cutting ceremony July 17. Working out Minerva: Narrative Formulation of Religious Divinity in Ovid’S Metamorphoses
Working Out Minerva: Narrative Formulation of Religious Divinity in Ovid’s Metamorphoses Scholarship on the Arachne narrative in book 6 of Ovid’s Metamorphoses focuses on the meta-poetic or meta-political implications of the two tapestries. Barbara Pavlock (2009), for example, suggests that one can identify Ovid’s poetic persona within Arachne’s weavings. Ellen Oliensis (2004) suggests that the competition between Arachne and Minerva represents a contest between Ovid and the Augustan regime. This paper will examine the link between Minerva’s religious affiliation to weaving and crafting, and Ovid’s narrative structure of the Metamorphoses. For this presentation, I will argue that the organization of Minerva’s tapestry reflects the narrative organization of other stories in the Metamorphoses where Minerva’s divinity is mentioned. Ovid was well aware of Minerva’s association with weaving and crafts—in the Fasti he refers to “the goddess of a thousand crafts” (3.833), a loose translation of the title of Athena Ergane who received cult worship from craftsmen and weavers alike at a shrine located on the Athenian acropolis (cf. Mikalson 2005). I will argue that Ovid’s ekphrasis of Minerva’s tapestry in Metamorphoses reflects her divine status as the goddess of crafting. In contrast to Arachne’s tapestry, Ovid frames Minerva’s work in a pattern which William Anderson (1972: 162) calls a “perfectly centered, balanced, and framed” formulation. Ovid begins the ekphrasis with the description of the tapestry’s centerpiece. The ekphrasis starts with the twelve Olympians being present during the certamen between Minerva and Neptune (6.72-72). -

Behrens Specialist in Energy Policy Resources, Science, and Industry Division The International Space Station and the Space Shuttle Summary The International Space Station (ISS) program began in 1993, with Russia joining the United States, Europe, Japan, and Canada. Crews have occupied ISS on a 4-6 month rotating basis since November 2000. The U.S. Space Shuttle, which first flew in April 1981, has been the major vehicle taking crews and cargo back and forth to ISS, but the shuttle system has encountered difficulties since the Columbia disaster in 2003. Russian Soyuz spacecraft are also used to take crews to and from ISS, and Russian Progress spacecraft deliver cargo, but cannot return anything to Earth, since they are not designed to survive reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. A Soyuz is always attached to the station as a lifeboat in case of an emergency. President Bush, prompted in part by the Columbia tragedy, made a major space policy address on January 14, 2004, directing NASA to focus its activities on returning humans to the Moon and someday sending them to Mars. Included in this “Vision for Space Exploration” is a plan to retire the space shuttle in 2010. The President said the United States would fulfill its commitments to its space station partners, but the details of how to accomplish that without the shuttle were not announced. The shuttle Discovery was launched on July 4, 2006, and returned safely to Earth on July 17. -

Earthrise, seen for the first time by human eyes On Christmas Eve 1968 three American astronauts were in orbit around the Moon: Frank Borman, James Lovell, and Bill Anders. The crew of Apollo 8 had been declared by the United Nations to be the ‘envoys of mankind in outer space’; they were also its eyes.1 They were already the first people to leave Earth orbit, the first to set eyes on the whole Earth, and the first to see the dark side of the Moon, but the most powerful experience still awaited them. For three orbits they gazed down on the lunar surface through their capsule’s tiny windows as they carried out the checks and observations prescribed for almost every minute of this tightly-planned mission. On the fourth orbit, as they began to emerge from the far side of the Moon, something happened. They were still out of radio contact with the Earth, but the on- board voice recorder captured their excitement. Borman: Oh my God! Look at that picture over there! Here’s the Earth coming up. RECOVERY HELICOPTERS By John Stonesifer The planning throughout the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) programs to recover astronauts from a water landing after returning from space was to use helicopters operating from a carrier-type ship positioned in the Planned Landing Area. Early Mercury flights (Shepard, Freedom 7; Grissom, Liberty Bell 7; Glenn, Friendship 7) were supported by Marine squadrons using UH34D helicopters (Photo #1) operating from carrier-type ships for the Atlantic ocean recoveries. Carpenter’s flight, Aurora 7 following Glenn’s orbital flight, was again planned to land in the Atlantic and be supported by the Marine helicopters aboard the USS Intrepid. Recovery support for Carpenter’s landing rapidly changed when it was learned the spacecraft landed approximately 250 miles downrange from the Planed Landing Area. The landing was beyond the range for the Marine helicopters to immediately depart for the landing area. Aboard the Intrepid was a squadron of the larger, faster, greater- range SH-3A Sea King helicopters (Photo #2) that were just recently introduced to the fleet. Their mission during this deployment was primarily to practice their role of anti- submarine warfare while at sea en route to the assigned recovery station. However, when information became available that Carpenter was a considerable range downrange, decisions were made to utilize the SH-3A helicopters rather than the UH34D helicopters to fly to the landing. The swim teams and photographers quickly transferred their gear to the SH-3As and they sped to the scene. At the scene, pararescue jumpers had already parachuted from an Air Force plane to install the flotation collar and render assistance to Carpenter in his raft.
