The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will fin d a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -
Abstract a Case Study of Cross-Ownership Waivers
ABSTRACT A CASE STUDY OF CROSS-OWNERSHIP WAIVERS: FRAMING NEWSPAPER COVERAGE OF RUPERT MURDOCH’S REQUESTS TO KEEP THE NEW YORK POST by Rachel L. Seeman Media ownership is an important regulatory issue that is enforced by the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC, Congress, court and public interest groups share varying viewpoints concerning what the ownership limits should be and whether companies should be granted a waiver to be excused from the rules. News Corporation is one media firm that has a history of seeking these waivers, particularly for the New York Post and television stations in same community. This study conducted a qualitative framing analysis of news articles from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal to determine if the viewpoints expressed by the editorial boards were reflected in reports on News Corp.’s attempt to receive cross-ownership waivers. The analysis uncovered ten frames the newspapers used to assist in reporting the events and found that 80% of these frames did parallel the positions the paper’s editorial boards took concerning ownership waivers. ("Jodesha"), by its attorney, hereby submits its Comments in the above-captioned rule making proceeding. Jodesha is the proponent of the allotment changes proposed in this rule making proceeding. Its reasons for seeking the allotment changes are fully set out in its Petition for Rule Making and are incorporated herein by reference. Attached hereto is an Engineering Statement which contains the gain and loss area studies with respect to the proposed reallotment of Channel 249Cl to Oakville, Washington, and the replacement of Channel 289C2 with Channel 300A at South Bend, Washington, that the Commission requested be submitted by Jodesha. As a preliminary matter, it is pointed out that it is Jodesha's present intention to operate Station KFMY on Channel 249C1 as an Oakville station from the station's existing transmitter site and that it is Jodesha's present intention to continue to operate Station KJET on Channel 289C2 as a Raymond No. of Copies rec'd O<t Lf Ust ABCOE station from the station's existing transmitter site. Therefore, no actual gain or loss will result from the reallotment of either Channel 249C1 to Oakville or Channel 289C2 to Raymond. Nevertheless, in response to the Commission's request, the Engineering Statement does contain (i) a gain and loss analysis comparing the coverage of Station KFMY from its existing transmitter site with the coverage that the Station would realize if it were to operate from the Oakville Channel 249C1 reference site and (ii) a gain and loss analysis comparing the coverage of a station operating on Channel 300A at South Bend with the existing coverage of Station KJET. -

New America Foundation An Information Community Case Study: Seattle A digital community still in transition Jessica Durkin, Tom Glaisyer, and Kara Hadge, Media Policy Initiative June 2010, Release 2.0 Seattle, Washington, could be considered a city singularly suited to develop a healthy democracy in the digital age. The city government, citizens and business have created a productive environment for the next generation of information-sharing and community engagement. Years of economic growth and relative prosperity have fostered new, superior practices in news and information. Yet, losing a major print newspaper, as Seattle did when The Seattle Post-Intelligencer closed, adversely affects a community, by leaving it with one less place to provide public service journalism, stories about people and general community updates. In parallel, Seattle has been at the center of an explosion of alternative news outlets, especially online, which has created a critical mass of information portals for geographic and social communities. As the Knight Report, Informing Communities: Sustaining Democracy in a Digital Age, highlights, it is important to understand that there are three important elements to be considered as we analyze media and democracy in the 21st century: • availability of relevant and credible information to all Americans and their communities; • capacity of individuals to engage with information; and • individual engagement with information and the public life of the community. However, despite the relative vibrancy of the media scene, and even with all its demographic and other advantages, it is unclear how much of this innovation is sustainable. The local web is littered with websites that are no longer updated, and few of the startups boast anything like the journalistic firepower or profitability of the papers of the past. -

I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007. -
