A History of the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania Kristie Bosko Mertz, Ph.D. “…the more I study the history of the Orthodox Church in this land, the more convinced I become that our task here is God’s task, that God Himself helps us.” 1 — St. Patriarch Tikhon, Farewell Address, March 7, 1907 Introduction The history of our archdiocese is inextricably bound to the larger history of Orthodoxy in America. What is now known as the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania began in 1916 with the tonsuring and consecration of Fr. Alexander Dzubay as Bishop Stephen, within the former North American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. His situation, in terms of being an immigrant of Carpatho-Russian ethnicity and a convert to Orthodoxy from the Byzantine Catholic (Greek Catholic) faith, was in no way unique at that time. However, it provides us with a glimpse of the evolving religious landscape and the foundation that was laid for the creation of the archdiocese and for its subsequent development. The Beginning of Orthodoxy in America Orthodoxy in America began in 1794, when Russian missionaries from Valaam Monastery arrived at Kodiak Island in the Aleutian Islands.1 The beginning of Orthodoxy in this country was found mainly in the future state of Alaska (which was a part of Russia) and in California, but very quickly grew up in the industrial areas of the United States such as Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, and West Virginia. The entirety of North America and Canada was one large diocese with very scattered Orthodox communities. -

A Brief Biography of Mikhail Sergeevich Konstantinov (compiled by Vladimir V. Krassovsky and presented at the 20th Annual Russian Orthodox Church Musicians' Conference in Seattle, October 4-7, 2007) Mikhail Sergeevich Konstantinov, a conductor, composer and singer was born on October 22, 1904 in the Fortress of Novo-Georgievsk, Russia. He made giant contributions to the sphere of secular classical music and even more so to the realm of Russian Orthodox liturgical music. His fate was both glorious as well as tragic, because he lived during the most treacherous times of his homeland’s history. After WW2, he became one the millions of compatriots who were forced to emigrate, which in turn rendered his talent and his creative life virtually unknown, even to the majority of his compatriots. Had the historical and social circumstances been different, the name of Mikhail Konstantinov undoubtedly would have taken its place among such giants as Kastal’sky, Chesnokov, Shaliapin, or Sobinov, all those who have richly embellished the history of Russian culture with their talents. Within the scope of this very short and by far not complete biographical overview, and using the limited amount of resources at my disposal, I will attempt to recreate the spiritual and creative make-up of Mikhail Konstantinov in order to allow future generations to familiarize themselves with the life and work of a most prominent and distinguished conductor, tenor, musicologist and composer, who by rights should be ranked among the finest musicians of Russia, as well as the Diaspora. And yet his career was already one of immense courage and holiness. In the 1940s he had suffered torture at the hands of the Japanese for refusing to bow to an idol in Harbin; in 1945 he was the only clergyman in the city who refused to accept a Soviet passport or commemorate the Soviet authorities that now took control of China; and in the 1950s he was subjected to torture by the Chinese communists, who unsuccessfully tried to blow him up but left him permanently injured. Involuntarily, after 1945 he found himself in the Moscow Patriarchate. But this burdened his conscience greatly, and he continued to denounce the Soviet Antichrist. Finally he got his chance to escape the nets of the communists and Soviet church: in 1961 he was able to leave China. “When, finally, with the help of God I managed to extract myself from red China, the first thing I did was turn to the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, Metropolitan Anastasy, with a request that he consider me again to be in the jurisdiction of the Russian Church Abroad. Vladyka Metropolitan replied with mercy and love, and immediately blessed me to serve in Hong Kong already as a priest of the Synodal jurisdiction, and pointed out that every church server passing into this jurisdiction from the jurisdiction of Moscow must give a special penitential declaration to the effect that he is sorry about his (albeit involuntary) stay in the Moscow jurisdiction. -

In our Sister Churches, Bishop Photii, who is one Archbishop Chrysostomos’ closest friends, is held in high esteem for his insights and for his humility. Dear Parishioners, Thank you for wearing your masks and striving to maintain social distance in church. I need your help in welcoming people into your pew. For the "on time" arrivals or maybe a few minutes late, those that wander up the aisle looking for a place to sit, if there is space, invite them into your pew. Slide in or are out and allow them to enter. Thank you! This past week we had a staff person exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 outside of our parish community. Our staff member is self-quarantined for 14 days with an estimated return date of October 2nd and has had no symptoms at this time. This has affected our "Hearts on FIRE", religious education for grades 1-5, which has been moved two weeks out, with a start date of Oct. 5. We are cooperating fully with local health officials in the tracing process. As always if you are experiencing any symptoms, please contact your medical provider and consider being tested. We will continue to strongly encourage everyone to take the precautions of wearing masks, observing social distancing, frequent hand hygiene, and sanitizing and disinfecting common areas and high touch surfaces. Please keep all those facing COVID-19 in prayer. Sept 29th is the feast of the Archangels. Angels (messengers from God) appear frequently in scripture, but only Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael are named. As we approach their feast day, I challenge you to know about the angels and to invoke their patronage. -

1 Rassophore Monk Angelos Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary Perpetual Embers: A Chronicle of ROCOR’s Missionary Efforts in India Introduction The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia,1 although founded as the church of the post-revolutionary Russian diaspora, also served as the custodian and guardian of the scattered pre-revolutionary Russian Orthodox missions in various parts of the world. From these, some quarters of ROCOR inherited and maintained a missionary spirit that has resulted in Orthodoxy flourishing in places where there had previously been no preaching of Christ’s saving message. Some of these missions have continued to blaze like a fire amidst the growing darkness of our secular age while others have remained ‘perpetual embers,’ steadily glowing through the toils of dedicated missionaries yet never reaching their full potential; God’s will for their full fruition seemingly delayed until He deems it meet. One such mission field is India: the great subcontinent, birthplace of two of the world’s most significant religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, home to one of its largest Muslim populations, and native land to one of the most ancient eastern Christian communities – the Saint Thomas Christians of Kerala.2 ROCOR has been present in India, to some extent, throughout most of ROCOR’s history, particularly in the years immediately before and after the Second World War. A number of ROCOR luminaries – including some who later became bishops and first hierarchs– were involved in the small Indian mission at one time or another, but few, with certain very notable exceptions, made India their home for any considerable period of time. -
