Many explanations have been proposed to explain this tendency. This study critically examines these theories through historical and musicological analyses and concludes that the prevalence of the downbeat is a mixture of Jamaican folk and African-American popular music influences in its earliest incarnation, but was later deliberately emphasized in an attempt to create a unique new musical style.

Based on extensive ethnographic research in Ethiopia between 2015 and 2017, this project examines the ways in which repatriated Rastafari use music to transform their Promised Land into a reality amidst various challenges. Since they are denied legal citizenship, Rastafari deploy reggae in creative and strategic ways to gain cultural citizenship and recognition in Ethiopia. This research examines how reggae music operates as a productive mechanism, that is, how human actors use music to produce social and tangible phenomena in the world. Combining theories on music’s productive capabilities with Rastafari ideologies on word-sound, this research further seeks to provide deeper insight into the ways Rastafari effect change through performative arts. I examine how Rastafari mobilize particular discourses that both challenge and reproduce hegemonic systems, creating space for themselves in Ethiopia through music. Rastafari use reggae in strategic ways to insert themselves into the contested national narratives of Ethiopia, and participate in the practice of space-making in Addis Ababa and Shashemene through sound projects.

(A later version of this essay appeared as ‘Chris Blackwell and ‘My Boy Lollipop’: Ska, Race and British Popular Music’ in Journal of Popular Music Studies, vol 22, no 4, 2010, pp. 436-465.) Chris Blackwell and “My Boy Lollipop”: Ska, Race and British Popular Music Ska evolved in Jamaica around 1960. I shall talk a little more about its development later. In 1964 there were three hits in the British top ten that utilized a ska beat. On March 14 Millie reached number 2 with “My Boy Lollipop.” A week later, the Migil 5’s ska version of “Mockin’ Bird Hill” reached number 10, its highest position. In December, Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames got to number 1 with the jazz track, “Yeh Yeh,” to which they gave a soft ska influence. Discussions of ska, and reggae, have tended to focus on the music’s Jamaican origins and have emphasized its qualities as black music. In this article my interest is in the relationship between ska and British popular music of the early 1960s. How did ska enter white Britons’ musical consciousness such that, by the late 1960s there were numerous ska hits and, by the late 1970s, there was a ska revival with groups such as Madness and the Two Tone groups including the Specials and Selector having chart hits? To this end I shall concentrate on the most popular of the three 1964 ska hits, Millie’s “My Boy Lollipop.” This song was first recorded as a rhythm and blues song in New York by Barbie Gaye about whom little is known other than that she was not black.

Website Preface As a lot of people reading this will already know, the first book published by S.T. Publishing was Spirit Of ‘69 - A Skinhead Bible back in 1991. Originally, a mainstream publisher in London, UK, was going to release it, but after a few months of pissing me about, I decided to do it myself. At the time, I knew sweet Fanny Adams about the publishing game, but it’s amazing what you can achieve when a lorry turns up at your front door with a mountain of books and you know every last penny you have (and then some) is riding on the fact that you can shift them. I wrote Spirit Of ‘69 - A Skinhead Bible not because I think I’m some sort of expert on skinheads, but because I passionately believed that the history of the cult, warts and all, had to be written from the inside. Before Spirit Of ‘69, there had only ever been one skinhead book that sought to act as a guide to the skinhead cult – Nick Knight’s Skinhead (Omnibus Press). First published in 1982, it was largely meant as a vehicle for photographer Nick Knight’s skinhead portraits, but was padded out with a few pages on skinhead origins, music, dress, behaviour and the like. What really makes it worth having though is the section on fashion by Jim Ferguson, something that to this day is held in very high regard by skinheads all over the world, and particularly by those who choose to dress in the original skinhead style.

Exchanges flowed across the city’s ethnic frontier, bridging black and white youth together in an ‘oppositional’ and musical movement. While migrants enacted their Jamaican ethnicity in places where reggae was played, many non-Jamaicans satisfied a curiosity in the music of their migrant friends. This study examines the process of migration of people and music as seen from both the migrant and the host’s perspective. It is as much about black Jamaicans as it is about white Torontonians. Twenty Jamaicans and twenty non-Jamaicans were interviewed for this project. Though reggae became an expected part of Toronto’s musical vernacular, the Canadian version meant different things to different people. Indeed, sometimes the only thread that tied the varied experiences together was that Toronto was the place where reggae happened. Still, as a hybrid, reggae had rather evolved outside of place. It was a transnational musical form, constantly updated by influences traversing the ‘Black Atlantic’ in an on-going and triangular musical conversation.

A Guide to Reggae Worksheet
ORIGINS & INFLUENCES The term ‘Reggae’ is really only supposed to cover the period in Jamaican music from 1969 to about 1979. There are several other very important genres of Jamaican music (or at least, genres that originated from Jamaica) that appeared prior to the style we call ‘Reggae’ today. Once again, blues and R&B are very important influences, not just musically but also socially: both reggae and blues originated as musical expressions of hardship. It only took until the 1940s for Jamaicans to become familiar with the sound of dance hall R&B, both in terms of the jazzy rhythms and the instrumentation. Exposure to this style came through radio and home made ‘sound systems’. The traditional calypso Jamaican folk music – mento – ‘cross pollinated’ with these R&B forms giving birth to Ska, the precursor to Rocksteady and Reggae. Reggae is often associated with the Rastafari movement, which influenced many prominent reggae musicians in the 1970s and 1980s. Very generally, the subject matter of reggae songs deals with many subjects other than Rastafari, with love songs, sexual themes and broad social commentary being common. SKA ORIGINS & influences Ska is the first major local Jamaican genre, flourishing from 1961 or 62 to around 1966. The genre gave birth to Rocksteady and then Reggae in around 1968. Ska can be divided into three waves. Ska's popularity has gone up and down since its original creation, and has had revivals of note in England in the 1980s and another wave of popularity in the 1990s. First Wave When New Orleans-style R&B fell out of favor by 1960, Jamaican artists began recording their own version of it, and this became Ska.

Jamaica Jamaica Jamaica is één van de bekendste eilanden in het Caribisch gebied. Op dit eiland zijn mento, ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, ragga en dancehall ontstaan. De Jamaicaanse muziek heeft haar weg over de hele wereld gevonden. Zij heeft op veel muziek haar stempel gedrukt. MENTO (Jamaica) Mento onstaat in de jaren 1940 en 1950 op het eiland Jamaica uit de traditionele volksmuziek. Mento is de eerste muziek die op 78 toeren platen bewaard blijft. Er wordt dan natuurlijk al eeuwen muziek gemaakt, maar die muziek is nooit in opnames vastgelegd. Mento combineert de muziek van de lokale bevolking met invloeden van Amerikaanse bigbands en calypso muziek. Soms wordt mento 'Jamaicaanse calypso' genoemd omdat het wel een beetje op deze carnavals- en feestmuziek lijkt. Mento is dansmuziek. Mentobands spelen aanvankelijk alleen op bruiloften en feesten.
