Time & Setting: During the quarantine, on a group call, a very strange time indeed. Runtime: 10 min.

Production Assistants: Asher Suski and Caley Cogbill Urinetown, the (home-video) Musical Director’s Note: The Covid-19 pandemic transformed the world in ways none of us ever could have imagined. KU Theatre was in the middle of rehearsals for Urinetown, The Musical when the pandemic halted live theatre in its tracks and forced us all to re-think the nature of public and private space. I was the dramaturg of that production, working in close collaboration with director Eric F. Avery. When the show was cancelled I mourned. Not just for the loss of seeing the vision realized on the stage, but for the opportunities for the young performers cast in the roles. I was particularly upset because the non-traditional casting that Eric had put together was allowing young performers to shine in ways that they often were excluded from. I wanted to give them even a shorter/smaller platform on which to be able to showcase their skill, and was delighted that so many of the original cast were able to perform in this little homage to our larger show, even some of our recent graduates came back: AnnaMarie, Kayla and Tinanshe. In addition to wanting to see these remarkably talented performers shine, I felt that the story the musical was telling, already relevant, had suddenly become relevant in new and strange ways. While we don’t have the time to tell you the full story, we did find a creative way to give you a sneak peek into the wild world of Urinetown, The Musical, through home-video and some fun, masked-up, outdoor shooting sessions. We hope you enjoy.
