Foreign Affinities Arabic Translations of English Poetry and their Impact on Modern Arabic Verse: A Discursive Approach Ghareeb Saedi Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD 2018 School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics SOAS, University of London Abstract This is the first discursive study to examine the Arabic translations of a number of major modern poems in the English language in particular T. S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land” and Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself”. These translations were done by the Arab translators who were themselves modernist poets, including Badr Shākir al- Sayyāb, to whom a separate chapter is dedicated as a case study. The thesis begins by underlining the relationship between translation and modernity by reviewing some critical studies and translational strategies. The framework allows me to approach the given poems comprehensively, since this study argues that poetry is not only a linguistic composition but also a socio-cultural construct. Thus, this study treats each of these translations as a discursive process comprising three contexts: situational, verbal and cognitive. The situational context highlights the background of these poems and each one’s importance in its own system. It also reveals the reasons why Arab modernists were drawn to these poems. The verbal context studies the Arabic translations of the selected poems. It provides a comparative analysis, although its aim is to emphasize specific stylistic issues which function more than others in the target system. The cognitive context underlines the impact of these English poems on Arabic modernity on formal, stylistic and thematic levels. Finally, the thesis covers the main trends in the translation of English poetry into Arabic, and in so doing it presents a new approach. writing, speaking, art, music, design and so on. All of them are regarded as forms of translation. We communicate with each other, whether artistically or ordinarily, by translating ideas, feelings etc. Literature and translation have always worked hand in hand. History shows us that these two activities have been practised in various ways in the classical world as ancient civilizations interacted with each other. Thus, the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh and other philosophic and scientific texts were translated into Babylonian languages. Greeks translated some Babylonian and Egyptian texts. Babylonians translated texts from Persia and so on. Translating literature was at the heart of their interaction since some sciences and philosophies were embodied or written in literary forms. Furthermore, the history of literature has shown us that many poetic movements have been based on translation. In the West, Roman poets ‘indirectly’ translated Greek literature into their works. For example, Homer’s the lliad resembles Virgil’s the Aeneid on thematic and stylistic levels. In an introduction to his translation of the Aeneid, David West notes that ‘the first words of the Aeneid are “I sing of arms and of the man …” (arma virumque cano). Since the lliad is the epic of war, and the first word in the odyssey is “man”, Virgil has begun by announcing that he is

Buescu It is arguable that, if world literature is also a mode of reading, as David Damrosch states, there may be special cases in which the choice of works to be read and/or to be translated has to be accounted for as a poetic gesture towards a planetary literary awareness. In such instances, the sense of literary estrangement is part of the reading process, and the project of its non- domestication (perhaps a stronger way to draw on Lawrence Venuti’s notion of foreignization) is very much at the centre of the hermeneutical process. In what follows I will be dealing with an interesting case of translation (or some- thing akin to it), from the point of view of a poet. It is not only that it is a poet who translates poems by others. It is also, as we shall see, that he translates them as a poet, that is, as part of his own poetic stance. What is (and what isn’t) a literary translation? That is the question that lies at the heart of this endeavour. As we shall see, it is also a case in which, through translation, cultural diversity and provenance are transformed into a clearly distinguished work: translating is a mode of reading, but it is also a mode of shifting socio- logical and aesthetic functions and procedures. This is why we may be able to say that world literature is not solely a mode of reading, but a mode that deals with the constant invention of reading—by reshaping the centre and the peripheries of literary systems, and by thus proposing ever-changing forms of actually reading texts that seemed to have been already read.

    A Grave for New York and New York 80: Formulating an Arab Identity through the Lens of New York Michelle Hartman From the skyscrapers of mid-town Manhattan to the Brooklyn Bridge, from the Statue of Liberty to the prostitutes of Time Square, from Harlem to Wall Street, images of New York City are some of the most potent representations of the United States around the world. This paper explores how two Arab authors use New York City as a lens through which they for- mulate an Arab identity in and for their literary texts and I am concerned in particular with the way in which gender and race are used in these formulations. The two works I discuss are Adonis’s Qabr min ajl new york (A Grave for New York)1 and Yusuf Idris’s New York 802, published in Arabic in 1971 and 1980 respectively, and both written in Arabic, for an Arab audience. There is no doubt that either work is anything but a scathing critique of New York, used as a metonym for the United States, and in particular its claim to technology and ‘advancement.’ Both pieces clearly advocate resistance to American hegemony in the world and harshly condemn the capitalist greed with which the United States has become syn- onymous throughout the world thus manifesting the political commitment of their authors and conveying a message of Third World solidarity.     Shanlax International Journal of English 1 Umberto Eco, Italy‟s most celebrated philosopher, semiotician, literary critic, linguist and novelist, is widely acclaimed for many of his influential scholarly works. His novels The Name of the Rose, Foucault’s Pendulum, Baudolino, An Island of the Day Before, Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana, The Prague Cemetery have gained much adulation from his readers. His recent novel Numero Zero has also earned greater Dr. B. Kathiresan popularity. Temporal distortion refers to a technique that the postmodern authors implement in their novels to convey the story. It includes employing features like fragmentation and non- linear narration. Fragmentation is the disarray of events whereas non-linear narration is the usage of distorted timeline in the portrayal of events. A novel, in general, usually incorporates a structure that assembles the compendium of information belonging to the story in an organized fashion. When this fabrication breaks, there is an interruption in the disposal of the events of the story, affecting the totality of meaning.

Abstract Here we present two unpublished essays by Hubert Jennings about the challenges of translating the poetry of Fernando Pessoa: the first one of them, brief and fragmentary, is analyzed in the introduction; the second, longer and also covering issues besides translation, is presented in the postscript. Having as a starting point the Pessoan poem “O que me doe” and three translations compared by Hubert Jennings, this presentation examines some aspects of poetic musicality in the Portuguese language: verse measurement, stress dynamics, rhymes, anaphors, and parallelisms. The introduction also discusses how much the English versions of the poem, which are presented by Jennings, recreate (or not) the musical-poetic dimensions of the original text. He left behind him a number of religious writings. Eliot’s mother was an enthusiastic social worker as well as a writer of caliber. His family background shaped his poetic sensibility and contributed a lot to his development as a writer, especially as a religious poet.

These manuscripts constitute MSS 2851-2874. Some items were deposited after 1985 and these, along with the manuscripts in the possession of the author at his death were purchased in 1996, with the aid of the National Fund for Acquisitions. These manuscripts constitute MSS 3124-3137. Further manuscripts were found by his family subsequently and were gifted in December 1997: these manuscripts constitute E97.67. This group is not sorted or listed and needs to integrated with MSS 3124-3137 as the material is closely linked with the material in this group, e.g. further mss and tss of his Oxford trilogy. Wain’s incoming correspondence and outgoing letters to Philip Larkin were purchased with the help of the National Fund for Acquisitions in 1999 (E99.01). These are included in MS 2875. The manuscript of his first novel, Hurry on Down (1953), has not survived, but notebooks, mss and typescripts of most of his later novels, short stories, poetry, plays and criticism are present. The list below was compiled at different times, and conventions regarding italicization, etc. are not consistent.
