LEARMONTH & SON 9 KING STREET 1932 PREFACE. This collection of Modem Gaelic Poetry was first published in 1918 as a companion volume to Rosg Gaidhlig (1915; 2nd edn. 1929). In the present edition the entire work has been revised, and the Notes and Vocabulary extended. Indices of Place Names, Personal Names, and Names of Authors, which were omitted from the first edition owing to scarcity of paper at the time, have been added. It is satisfactory to know that the book has been widely used and appreciated. It is hoped that in the revised and enlarged form it will be found of still greater service. At the present time, when so much of our excellent Gaelic poetry is out of print and inaccessible to students and to the Gaelic people, nothing is more urgently needed than a comprehensive scheme of republication. We want a Scottish Gaelic Text Society or its equivalent. No language can live without a literature, and what is essential for the preservation of Gaelic as a living tongue is that its speakers should become also its readers. It is a pleasure to thank the Printers for the care and patience with which they have executed the difficult work of alterations and additions in regard to Notes and Vocabulary. W. J. W. In 1819 Robert Southey, the Poet Laureate, in company with Telford, the great engineer, made a compre- hensive tour through Scotland, and, being a true bookman, kept a record of the people met and the things seen during their journey. It bears a note by him to the effect that he purchased it in Keswick from the Rev. Mr Southey in August 1864. The exhibition of the manuscript on the occasion of the celebration, in June 1928, of the Centenary of the grant of a Royal Charter to the Institution—obtained largely through the instrumentality of Thomas Telford, its first President—drew attention to the interest of the Journal, not only as a contemporary account of the great works which Telford was then carrying out in Scotland, but also as the diary of a shrewd and travelled observer, depicting social and industrial conditions in Scotland in the early years of the nineteenth century.

Analysoimalla laulajien kuvauksia eri tekstilähteissä artikkelissa pyritään selvittämään mitä yhteyksiä folklaulajien representaatioilla on nostalgiaan ja kult- tuurisen muistin eri tasoihin. Keywords: cultural memory, folk music, folk singers, media representations, nostalgia 1 Introduction Nostalgia has a central part in the construction of a folk singer representation, as well as with the imagery connected to folk singers. The artist types for different genres of music are constructed through and preserved on the collective level of cultural memory; in folk music these types are particularly persistent, even though the artists may not ac- tively perform the stereotypical folk singer image. Thus, because of collective memory, if an artist is referred to as a folk singer it might bring to mind a long haired young woman, often alone on the stage playing the guitar and singing sad songs about lost love and heartbreak. This representation, constructed mostly during the 1960s folk revival by and for Joan Baez, Judy Collins and others, is still the prevalent public representation reserved for female folk singers. This article discusses nostalgic representations of female folk singers in different media sources such as digital publications of magazine articles, interviews, and concert and album reviews.

It covers the northern lower slopes of Aonach Mor, Carn Mor Dearg and Beinn Nebheis mountain massif. The 3,130ha national forest estate here is continuous with the forest of Killiechonate estate to the north and the re-establishing natural woodland of the former British Aluminium estate to the south and west. Its north western boundary is the Fort William to Spean Bridge railway line. The main forest acquisition of 3,058ha was in 1933 from the Law Debenture Corporation. Chapman Wood (164ha) to the south, in Coire Cul na Creige Duibhe, was acquired in 2007. A small area by Leanachan farm was sold in 2003. Current land use and key features Leanachan forest is a major recreation facility close to Fort William with access to the Nevis Range gondola, cycling and walking trails. There is an approved Masterplan for the development of further tourism facilities including accommodation within the forest. The forest is predominantly conifer plantation woodland. A fringe of native woodland has developed above the conifer tree line and represents a link to a tree cover predating the Forestry Commission’s work.

    Lochaber Eel Survey Final report 2010 Lochaber Fisheries Trust Ltd. Biologists: Diane Baum, Lucy Smith Torlundy Training Centre, Torlundy Fort William PH33 6SW 01397 703728 Funded through grants from Scottish Natural Heritage and Marine Scotland Summary This study is the first systematic survey of eel populations in Lochaber. Electrofishing was used to collect data on eel distribution and density across Lochaber between 2008 and 2010, and this was compared to incidental eel records from historical surveys (1996-2004). We found no evidence for a contraction in the distribution of eels across Lochaber. Eels were recorded in all the catchments surveyed with the exception of Morar. Eels are known to be present in Loch Morar and may simply prefer the loch habitat to tributary burns covered by this survey. Young eels were present on most catchments and estimates of eel age suggest recruitment of young eels has occurred on all but one of the catchments surveyed within the last 4 years. The oldest eel caught was estimated to be at least 28 years old, and could be over 40 years old if growth rates are low on our rivers. Eel densities tended to be higher on rivers entering the west coast (Moidart, Shiel, Inverie) than those draining into upper Loch Linnhe. This could reflect the relative ease of migration of elver to the west coast as opposed to the head of a long sea loch. We found no relationship between eel density or mean eel size and survey site characteristics, altitude and distance form the sea. Overall we found no evidence for a decline in eel distribution or abundance in Lochaber, but potential threats to the region’s eel population are discussed.
