TEAM NOTES:

ASTON-REESE RETURNS Zach Aston-Reese scored a goal in his season debut on Thursday in New York after missing the first 11 games due shoulder surgery. Aston-Reese’s goal gives Pittsburgh 16 unique goal scorers this season, tied for the sixth most in the league:

Team Unique Goal Scorers Columbus 20 Washington 18 Edmonton 18 Toronto 17 Vancouver 17 Pittsburgh 16

IN RUST WE TRUST Winger Bryan Rust has been one of Pittsburgh’s most consistent performers through the first 12 games of the season. Rust has points in a team-best nine of 12 games this season (3G-7A) and his nine games with at least a point are tied for fourth-best in the East Division:

Player Games w/PT Brad Marchand 11 Nicklas Backstrom 10 10 Bryan Rust 9 Jakub Voracek 9 Mathew Barzel 9 David Krejci 9

Rust sits one assist shy of 100 in his career. Since making his NHL debut on Dec. 13, 2014, Rust ranks sixth on the Penguins in goals (81) and seventh in assists (99) and points (180).

HOME SWEET HOME The Penguins return home to PPG Paints Arena where they’ll play their next four games before departing on a four-game road trip. Pittsburgh (4-0-0) remains one of just four teams without a loss of any kind at home along with the (6-0-0), (4-0-0) and (3-0-0). Below is a look at the team’s stats at home and their NHL ranks:

Stat Total Rank Points % 1.00 T-1st Goals/GM 3.50 13th Power Play % 33.3 10th Shots Against/GM 27.3 T-6th Faceoff % 57.6 2nd

Bryan Rust (2G-2A) is the only remaining Penguin to record a point in every home game this season.

A RIVALRY OF GENERATIONAL TALENTS The 2020-21 season marks the 16th season that generational talents Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin face off. The two have taken part in 54 head- to-head matchups, where Crosby and the Penguins have gone 33-19-2 against Ovechkin and the Capitals. Below are their stats when facing each other in the regular season:

Player GP G A PTS Sidney Crosby 54 27 50 77 Alex Ovechkin 54 31 23 54

Not only is the Crosby/Ovechkin rivalry one of the NHL’s best, but it’s also one of the league’s longest-standing rivalries. Crosby and Ovechkin are two of just eight players in the NHL to play for the same team since the beginning of the 2005-06 season along with Patrice Bergeron (BOS), Dustin Brown (LAK), Ryan Getzlaf (ANA), Mark Giordano (CGY), Duncan Keith (CHI) and Brent Seabrook (CHI). Only Bergeron and Brown played for their current teams prior to the ‘05-06 season.

WASHINGTON WHIPPERS Penguins Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have consistently produced points throughout their careers against the Capitals. Despite not playing in the same division as Washington until 2013-14, the duo ranks first (tied) and third, respectively, in points versus the Capitals among all active players:

Player GP G A PTS PTS/GM Sidney Crosby 54 27 50 77 1.43 Eric Staal 83 32 44 76 .92 Evgeni Malkin 49 22 46 68 1.39 Joe Thornton 48 17 33 50 1.04 Claude Giroux 46 22 23 45 .98

No active players have more assists against Washington than Crosby (50) and Malkin (46), and they are also two of just five current players to score 20 or more goals versus the Capitals.

500 GAMES FOR WEBER Recently acquired defenseman Yannick Weber’s next game will be the 500th of his NHL career.

Weber, a third-round pick (73rd overall) by Montreal in the 2007 NHL Draft, has split his 13-year career between the Canadiens, Vancouver, Nashville and now Pittsburgh:

TEAM GP PTS Montreal 115 32 (5G-27A) Vancouver 159 38 (17G-21A) Nashville 223 24 (6G-18A) Pittsburgh 2 0 (0G-0A) Total: 499 94 (28G-66A)

The 32-year old Weber will be the fifth player on Pittsburgh’s roster (Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin, Cody Ceci) with 500 or more games under their belt.
