TEAM NOTES:

EXTRA TIME EXPERTS For the seventh time this season, Pittsburgh saw a game go past regulation, tied for the second most in the NHL. A little under two minutes into the extra session, Kasperi Kapanen’s game-winning goal gave the Penguins their sixth overtime win (OT+Shootout), most in the NHL:

Team Wins Pittsburgh 6 Boston 5 Chicago 5 Three Teams 4

Per NHL PR, Pittsburgh improved to 8-0-0 in their last regular-season games against Washington that have gone past regulation dating back to Jan. 22, 2012. Since the 2016-17 season, the Penguins lead the NHL in wins past regulations with 48 despite playing in the fourth most overtime games (84). In that span, Sidney Crosby is tied for the second most overtime goals in the NHL with nine.

NOT JAKE-ING AROUND With his team-high tying fourth multi-point game (1G-1A) of the season on Tuesday night, Jake Guentzel pulled into a tie for the most points on Pittsburgh with 15 (6G-9A). Prior to this season, Guentzel had seven points (3G-4A) in nine games against Washington spread across four seasons. This season alone playing the Capitals, Guentzel has recorded a league-leading eight (3G-5A) points in five games, the most points one player has tallied against Washington since Nick Foligno’s eight points during the 2014-15 season.

Guentzel has points in six of his last seven games (4G-6A) against Washington and his 15 career points (6G-9A) versus the Capitals are his second most against one team:

Team Points Columbus 16 (8G-8A) Washington 15 (6G-9A) Vancouver 14 (9G-5A) NY Rangers 12 (2G-10A) Philadelphia 12 (4G-8A)

ROUNDING INTO FORM Goaltender Tristan Jarry was exceptional over his last five starts, helping Pittsburgh win four of the five contests. Since that five-game span began on Feb. 14, Jarry is tied for the NHL lead in wins (4), and has the seventh-best (tied) save percentage (.932) and eighth-best (tied) goals-against average (2.20) among all goaltenders with at least three starts during that time frame.

Jarry is 2-1-0 against the Capitals this season with a 2.67 goals-against average and .916 save percentage.

A RIVALRY OF GENERATIONAL TALENTS The 2020-21 season marks the 16th season that generational talents Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin face off. The two have taken part in 57 head- to-head matchups, where Crosby and the Penguins have gone 35-20-2 against Ovechkin and the Capitals. Below are their stats when facing each other in the regular season:

Player GP G A PTS Sidney Crosby 57 28 51 79 Alex Ovechkin 57 31 24 55

Not only is the Crosby/Ovechkin rivalry one of the NHL’s best, but it’s also one of the league’s longest-standing rivalries. Crosby and Ovechkin are two of just eight players in the NHL to play for the same team since the beginning of the 2005-06 season along with Patrice Bergeron (BOS), Dustin Brown (LAK), Ryan Getzlaf (ANA), Mark Giordano (CGY), Duncan Keith (CHI) and Brent Seabrook (CHI). Only Bergeron and Brown played for their current teams prior to the ‘05-06 season.

D.C. DOMINATORS Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have consistently produced points throughout their careers against the Capitals. Despite not playing in the same division as Washington until 2013-14, the duo ranks first (tied) and third, respectively, in points versus the Capitals among all active players:

Player GP G A PTS PTS/GM Sidney Crosby 57 28 51 79 1.41 Eric Staal 83 32 44 76 .92 Evgeni Malkin 52 23 46 69 1.33 Joe Thornton 48 17 33 50 1.04 Claude Giroux 46 22 23 45 .98

No active players have more assists against Washington than Crosby (51) and Malkin (46), and they are also two of just five current players to score 20 or more goals versus the Capitals.

PITTSBURGH’S TAXI SQUAD Below is a list of the players currently on Pittsburgh’s taxi squad:

F – Jordy Bellerive F – Josh Currie D – Yannick Weber G – Emil Larmi

NOTABLES FROM LAST GAME (FEB. 23 AT WSH) *The Penguins once again won by one goal, their league-leading eighth win by one goal.
