SLSWA Administrator of the Year

It’s hard to believe that 38 years ago, when Margaret Bond joined Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club, women were not able to become Active members of the Association.

Fast forward to 2017 and women like Margaret, our Administrator of the Year, have been crucial to the success of their clubs and the Surf Life Saving movement – both on the beach and behind the scenes.

Back in July 1980, when women were officially allowed to become Active members, Margaret was part of the first female squad in WA to receive their Bronze Medallion. Since then, Margaret has shown no signs of slowing down.

Sally Johnston (nee Johnson), Marg Bond, Sally Packard & Kerryn Briody

We asked her about her experiences below: Q. How would you describe yourself in one word? A. Organised

Q. Tell us about when you first joined Cottesloe SLSC in 1979 A. I’m originally from Queensland and lived at Maroochydore before moving to WA. I had a number of friends from Maroochydore and Alexandra Headland Surf Clubs. My brother was also a member at Noosa Heads SLSC. After moving to I joined Cottesloe SLSC as a social member and became the Social Co-Ordinator, organising club functions.

Once women were allowed to join as Active members, a number of women were keen to obtain their Bronze and the club captain, John Barrington, who was only 20 at the time, was interested in instructing us. After much negotiation by John with SLSWA, it was agreed we would sit our Bronze exam on 01 July 1980. We completed our dry skills then, but the wet skills assessment was deferred due to the weather and we had to wait until the following Sunday 06 July 1980. We had the usual couple of examiners on the beach and another ten “men in white” spectating. Upon our return to the clubhouse, we were given a lecture on how to behave in a surf club before the question was asked, “had we passed?”. It was a great achievement with quite a lot of interest from the media.

Cottesloe SLSC is recognised as a family club where everyone has a role to play. I have a loyal band of supporters who always offer to help whenever I call on them for events such as Open Day, the Annual Dinner and the CottMile to name just a few. I couldn’t do it without them and I thank them for their energy, spirit and unflagging support over the years. However in saying that, we are always looking for more volunteers.

Q. What was it like being among the first females in WA to get your Bronze Medallion? A. Women have played an integral part of Cottesloe SLSC’s history from the very early days where women ran their own carnivals, gave funds to build the men’s clubhouse, assisted behind the scenes, helped with administration and even leadership to nowadays when there is full participation.

It was hard in the beginning as many older members felt there was not the infrastructure within WA clubs for women to belong and to participate in activities and events, however this gradually changed as they saw how committed we were to surf lifesaving and the club. It took another three years before there was any interclub competition for women and then an additional four years before SLSWA ran all events for women in carnivals.

We didn’t do it for glory – it was something we were passionate about and of course still are. Three of the original squad are still active within Cottesloe SLSC and two others are active at other clubs. We’ve met up on 6 July every five years since obtaining our Bronze.

I’ve worked in some way or another for the club ever since obtaining my Bronze including being the first female Handicapper in the club for the 1980/1981 season. I did leave Perth for a few years but always remained a member. Once I returned I naturally reconnected with Cottesloe SLSC and have held numerous and quite varied positions throughout the years and in 2013 I was privileged to receive a Life Membership.

Q. How has being a lifesaver changed since you first joined? A. Many of my generation and the generation before are still in the club and close friends to this day. We relished doing patrols and meeting up afterwards to relax and have some fun. Our patrol tower was 8 metres high with a ladder on the outside and a trapdoor into the lookout box. The person already in the tower had to straddle the trapdoor to let the next person in – not great if you have a fear of heights.

Our Boxing Day BBQs were renowned, with people coming from far and wide to attend. We started our own swim club, the Walruses, at Beatty Park and had over 30 members attend each Monday night. We still meet up at the club each Christmas morning for champagne and a get together. People lead very differently lives now and we often struggle to get active members to complete their patrol hours – an issue most clubs are dealing with and one the Lifesaving Committee is often exploring. Fortunately, there are now any number of ways members can help out around the club and they don’t even need to get wet!

Q. What do you do outside of surf lifesaving? A. Travel has always been important to me as well as reading and staying in touch with family and friends. This has been so much easier for me since I retired two years ago. I recently went to Spain to celebrate a significant birthday and I’m off to Uluru to see the Field of Lights installation, The Olgas (Kata Tjuta) and King’s Canyon in September. I made sure I was here for our Open Day, which is two days before I leave. Fortunately, I have great support from wonderful parents, the Age Group Managers and our fabulous members who all help me throughout the season.

2

Q. What is your favourite beach in WA and why? A. Cottesloe Beach of course! How could you not love the wide, white sandy beach, the majestic Norfolk pines and Sunday slurpies at the Club watching the sunset over the beautiful Indian Ocean while looking for our famous green flash.

Q. In what way are you the same as your childhood self? A. I always loved to read as a child and family and friends have always been important to me. I grew up with 3 siblings and although they all live around Brisbane we are still very close. We loved to joke and tease each other as children and we still do so to this day.

Q. What is your favourite song lyric or movie quote? A. I don’t really watch movies and while I love going to concerts I prefer peace and quiet when I have spare time. There’s an old English proverb ‘Where there’s a will there’s a way’ and that probably sums it up for me. If you are determined enough, you can find a way to achieve what you want, even if the road ahead is difficult and fraught with obstacles.

Q. What is the funniest memory you have from your time with surf lifesaving? A. When I look back there are just so many happy times and fond memories but one that comes to mind are the Australia Day Country Carnivals. Cottesloe SLSC was a great club for attending the carnival, back in the days when we had a long weekend for Australia Day, and the Cottesloe Revues were renowned. A large contingent would travel to the carnival and all stay in the one area at the campsite. On the Saturday night we would dress up and perform skits followed by a BBQ. Clubs would try and stay near us and have their chairs set up theatre style ready for the revue and the Managers of the Denmark Caravan Park always made sure they had front row seats. It was so much fun and made for a great weekend.

Q. What is your favourite joke? A. I’m one of those people who loves hearing jokes but can never remember them!

Q. If you could speak to everyone in the world at the same time, what would you say? A. “Hello World” … one for the IT people! On a more serious note I would ask what could you do today to make a positive change for yourself and those around you? It doesn’t need to be big but something to make a difference and perhaps to make someone around you smile.

Q. What values has surf lifesaving taught you? A. Commitment, loyalty, dependability and enjoyment are just a few that come to mind. Our club values are respect, excellence, honesty, fun, potential and achievement, which guide us in all areas of the Club’s operations. The skills, knowledge and leadership opportunities you develop and undertake at a surf club can assist you in all aspects of your life both personally and professionally.

Q. What is one piece of advice you have for younger members of surf lifesaving? A. Be bold – you can achieve great things with belief in yourself particularly with help and assistance from other members. Take advantage of the experience the older members have and learn from their wisdom. Talk to them and get to know them and listen their thoughts and suggestions. While at the club watch and learn and give back, as it is often when we give back that we truly see the path ahead and perhaps mostly importantly have fun, laugh more and find enjoyment in every day.

Maxwell John Guilford Clarke 15 April 1944 - 30 May 2017

Maxwell John Guilford Clarke was born on 15th April 1944 to Ron and Phylis Clarke. Max had one younger sister, Judith, to whom he was particularly close; and the humour between the siblings was something to behold and always looked forward to, particularly at Christmas.

Max attended Cottesloe Primary School and it was here that Max met two of his greatest mates, Richard Thomas Wigzell (“Son”) and William Alexander Robertson (“Guv”). To know Max would also be to know Tom and Bill as there was no show without Punch and Judy. Their friendships would prove to be, literally, lifelong! And indeed continued into the afterlife.

Max completed his secondary education at John Curtin Senior High School and went on to UWA to achieve a Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis in geography and english. This background knowledge, no doubt, led to many a night as a quiz participant and later as the “I am always right!!” quizmaster. To question Max was to “lose points!”.

Max gained his bronze medallion in 1960 (WA 710) and became a very active Cottesloe Surf Club member. An above average swimmer, Max won a silver medal for Junior R & R (U/19 nowadays) at the Australian Titles in Moana (SA) in 1961. He also won two Junior R & R State Titles. Moreover he competed with success in a number of March Past teams too.

However, Max’s first love was as a boat rower. As a Junior boatie, Max along with Bill Robbo, Maurie Hayes, Peter Chivers, stroke Ken Gathercole (arguably Cottesloe’s greatest rower) and sweep/coach Danny Kay, took all before them winning two State Titles; as Juniors they were the best crew (beating the open crews) in the long distance races in the “West Australian” marathons which went from Leighton to Scarborough in a number of surf disciplines. Max was in the similar crew which then went on to win three open State Titles. The dominance of Cottesloe in boats in the sixties and the early seventies was such that the Club won some eight open boat titles at state level.

Along with gaining a National bronze, being Club Captain & being awarded Life Membership (1978), Max made many more lifelong friendships which are too numerous to mention here.

During 1972 at the Cottesloe Surf Club car raffle, Bill had taken one of the young ladies from work as he thought she might be a catch for Max; he described her as bit of a Boll Weavil – in that she was looking for a home. Her name was Maxine. Ron (Max’s father) gave it six weeks. Just prior to Max’s passing, Max and Maxine had celebrated some 44 years together!

In 1975 Max was transferred as a teacher to Derby for a quick two year stint. Eldest son Ben was born in July 1975. Max was transferred to Kojunup and Pingelly and second son Richard was born in February 1979. Max returned to Derby in 1981 as the Principal of Derby District High School and he remained there till retirement in 2004.

Max’s other great love was golf; although one wonders if this was merely a means of getting to the 19th hole on a fairly regular basis. During his time in Derby, Max was instrumental in leading the development of the Derby golf course being transformed to an all grass course from tee-to- green - and with the ubiquitous boab trees as part of the hazards.

7

Max maintained his swimming prowess as well as becoming the Derby Sharks’ swim coach for some 20 plus years enjoying much success at swim meets throughout the Kimberley and Darwin.

Max returned to Perth in 2005 and competed regularly with the Cottesloe Veterans and held office in the Vets. He also participated in the celebrations of the Cottesloe Surf Club in 2009 particularly in editing the 100th year book.

Max’s health during the past four years took its toll and although he fought the good fight, Max went to meet his great mates on 30th May 2017.

William Alexander Robertson 1st June 1944 – 28th October 2016

Bill was a family man, a businessman, a surf life saver, an athlete, a loyal team member & a man of high moral and ethical values. He was a prodigious volunteer, a local councillor and a natural leader. He was as good a mate as you could ever wish for.

Bill joined the Cottesloe SLSC in 1953 as a 9 year old. Seven years later in 1960, a bronze team was put together consisting of Bill Robertson, Max Clarke, Jim Laurenson, Barry Olson, Des Duff, Dirk van Drunick and John Ryan. The instructor was Eric Hofmaster and they passed the bronze examination on the 13th October 1960. Bill’s bronze number was WA709.

The surf club was a passion. He immersed himself in it. As well as patrols and competition, over the years Robbo found time for a long list of committees and leadership positions and was awarded his Life Membership of the club in 1985. But he wasn’t in it for the awards - it was part of his life. He continued his club contribution including four years as President from 1998.

It didn’t stop at club level. He was vice-president and president of the State association over seven years from 1987. Among the many positions he held, he was State Team Manager for four years. He was awarded Life Membership of Surf Life Saving WA in 1996. He was honoured with the rare life-membership double.

Life-long friendships were forged at the club; Bill and Max Clarke particularly became inseparable, Robbo and Clarkey, “Guv and Dingo”. If Max and Bill were in the building you knew it - they had presence … and they had volume. Bill met his wife Gail at the Club. They married at St Lukes Church Mosman Park on the 3rd November 1973.

When it came to competition, Max and Bill were drawn to the boat arena. With Danny Kay sweeping and Ken Gathercole stroke, they worked hard and had unprecedented success. Through the ‘60s, Bill won three senior State Championship gold medals, to add to the two junior titles the crew had won earlier. Cottesloe boats were a force in that era, due mainly to that crew.

It was a stella career of voluntary community service and sport at the highest level.

President Report

I proudly took on the role of President CSLSC last July in the hope of recreating my childhood experiences as a CSLSC Nipper and Cadet for our 500 or so Nippers and Titans.

I have many fond memories of growing up in and around Cottesloe with the beach and the Surf Club being my backyard. It was a safe playground for all the Nippers on the beach in those days with all parents and friends watching out for each other and each other’s kids, working together for the good of the Club and, ultimately, the children of the Club.

It seemed to me back then the majority of members were proud to volunteer, participate in Club activities and compete, all for the good of the Club and their fellow members. I remember members working together, supporting each other, socialising and forming lifelong friendships within the Surf Club and the children being their common bond. Well that was nearly sixty years ago and times have changed.

The 16/17 Season has had some ups and downs, positives and negatives, bad press, good press and, of course, there was that “fake news”. Most importantly it has been lots of fun on the beach and in the water and we have had success in many and various competition arenas.

Members of all ages proudly competed for their Club with many medals won at local, state, national and international competition. Large numbers of members also represented the Club at the 2016 RAC Christmas Pageant and again at the 2017 Cottesloe ANZAC Day Breakfast.

We also had members win awards in various categories outside the competition arena. Eliza Jackson (Town of Cottesloe Australia Day Citizen of the Year - Youth), Ben Stephens (Clubs WA Lifetime Contribution to Volunteering Award), Margaret Bond (SLSWA Awards of Excellence Administrator of the Year), Charlie Kavanagh and Jarred Davies both finalists in the SLSWA Awards of Excellence in the and Shane Mogan nominated by his school and being awarded the RSL WA Branch Surf Life Saving Cadet of the Year. Shane represented WA in the ANZAC Day Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

10

A special mention must go to our group of young Titans, some of whom joined the Club as five year olds and have progressed through the age groups developing skills and building strength and fitness, achieving qualifications in areas as diverse as Drone Pilot, CPR, Advanced Resuscitation and Spinal Management to Jet Ski/IRB Drivers and Helicopter Rescue Service crew members.

These young adults are now entering university and joining the workforce. Some have achieved amazing school results and received university scholarships. They are now heading off in various directions towards their future and taking a little bit of Surf Club life and Surf Life Saving skills, discipline and confidence with them. The Clubs AGM’s, trainers, coaches, mentors and helpers can take some credit for the success our young members have achieved away from the Club. They will make us proud.

Thank you to the members of the Management Committee, Jo Cammack, Sam Cowie, Jiorja Ralston, Susie Kay and Peter Berry. Being on the MC is hard work, time consuming, frustrating and not very rewarding and I thank you for your service. I could not have done it without you.

Thank you also to my predecessor Ben Stephens and to our Registrar, Margaret Bond, who have both been tireless workers and constant backstops throughout a very turbulent year.

Thank you to Gemmaley Walsh, Jane Govournet, Danny Savage and Ditte van der Linde for their tireless support. Thank you to our Patrol Officer, Peter Kuhne and his team of Patrol Captains. You somehow managed to put the fun back into patrolling.

Thanks to those members who have given their time serving on sub committees, helping out around the Club and on the beach, attending carnivals as officials and providing water safety. Brett McCarthy, Graham Pember, Ian Vilkson, Bruce Simpson, Mike Ivey, Greg Madden, Tash and Peter Leversuch, Anthony Whelan, Joelle Matier, Patricia Carmichael and Tom Brown, Tony and Jo Suda, Addison & Liam Ogg, Aurora and Indiana Leversuch, Bella Cowie, Lucy Irvine, Robert and Oliver Line, Liberty Madden, Marina Scull-Ward, Gail Burling, Gail Robertson, Helen Franks, Jim Laurenson, Jean Burling OAM, Chad Burling, Doug Simpson and the many, many more who deserve a mention.

A special thank you to Leesa Matier and Jan Stephens for all the time and effort they have put into Friday Night Food and Sunday food preparation.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many members who elected me President CSLSC, it has been a pleasure doing the job and helping out where and when I could. In the words of past president, Paul Gerrard, the job of most Presidents is to “just keep the seat warm” for the next JFK.

I will now stand aside for Ben Stephens to take back the position of President and ask the entire membership to get behind Ben and support him 100%. The future of the Club depends on everyone moving in the same direction. With Ben’s passion and commitment and the members support, he is the Clubs next JFK.

For the 12 months to April 2017 the Club returned a deficit of $51,093. This equated to a cash deficit of $38,243. Normalised revenue – excluding the $300,000 donation received last year and grant income which is non-recurring and not cash – was $501,381, down 19% compared to a year ago. Costs were $570,155, down 8% on prior year.

The Club has been lucky in recent years with significant income coming from hosting Sculptures by the Sea, the Havaianas Challenge, the Pylon Club and the third party gym agreement. For various reasons we didn’t have these income streams in 2016-17 and they were not replaced. In addition to this there has been a reduction in membership income, Sponsorship is down on last year reflecting the tough economic conditions we are experiencing, fundraising continues to be tepid and the Bar has performed poorly. Costs were lower than last year but this has not fully offset the reduction in revenue. Furthermore, costs can only be cut for so long as we need to invest in the club on an ongoing basis, including repairing and replacing equipment and maintaining the building. In short we need to grow the top line, not just control costs.

The Club is still in a healthy position financially as we had cash reserves, excluding the Foundation of $180,745 at 30 April, and this means that we can survive a bad year like this one, but relying on this is clearly unsustainable. Our costs, including capital investment, should be funded by revenues during the year, not funded by past savings.

Part of the solution relies on us pulling together as a club. There are many people who already donate a lot of time to the Club and we are extremely grateful to those people, but they only have so much bandwidth. To turn around the club’s fortunes we need more of us to get involved in fundraising activities throughout the year.

On a more positive note, money in the Foundation increased by $26,878. This was made up of $15,400 from the Club, $4,000 from the Veterans and $460 from Sonja Madden, with the remainder being interest earned. During the year $450,000 of Foundation cash was moved into two Term Deposit accounts earning a much higher rate of the interest than the club’s normal bank accounts.

Other successes to mention are that the Cottesloe Mile continues to be a popular event on the open water swim calendar, the Friday night food trucks have been popular, and the Eighties night was enjoyed by all.

From a personal point of view I would like to thank Greg Madden, Peter Ferguson and Patricia Carmichael for their continued assistance through the year on the Finance Committee and the Foundation Committee for the work they put into opening the Term Deposit accounts.

Secretary Report

Another year flies by. Over the course of the 2016-2017 season we have celebrated many moments and events. From the fabulous Cottesloe Classic Mile to the spectacular Annual Dinner. Together with these events we have committed to a continuance of service to the community with thousands of hours of patrol. We also welcomed SRC certificate and Bronze Medallion Award members as new patrolling members.

I would like to congratulate all our patrolling members who give so much to our club and provide such an essential service to the local community. It has been a very busy year with many hours spent on the beach but you have proven once again how well you all work as a team. I would also like to thank all those members who tirelessly give of their time to service the club, whether it be in the canteen or kitchen, behind the bar, taking care of the club and its surrounds or on the beach.

Many of our members continue to devote their time and love to the Club. Having the opportunity to work with some amazing and inspirational people has certainly been a positive to this role. Thank you to our President, David Hounslow, the Management Committee, Margaret Bond, Ditte van der Linde and Ben Stephens for your support and guidance. Being a part of a committee is not only educational but valuable.

Congratulations to our finalists for the WA Awards of Excellence (AoE) Awards: Marg Bond for SLSWA Administrator of the Year, Charlie Kavanagh, Support Operations Volunteer of the Year and Jarrad Davies Lifesaver of the Year. It was a great win for Marg as SLSWA Administrator of the Year Award (see full story elsewhere in this Report). Other notable achievements by Cottesloe SLSC members: Eliza Jackson, Town of Cottesloe Australia Day Awards Citizen of the Year – Youth, Marg Bond, Town of Mosman Park Long Serving Volunteer Recognition Award, Ben Stephens, Clubs WA Lifetime Contribution to Volunteering Award & Shane Mogan, Returned & Services League of Australia WA Branch, Surf Life Saving Cadet of the Year.

A big thank you to Paul Gerrard, Chairman of the Awards Committee, for his dedication to Marg Bond’s nomination and for his ongoing assistance with all AoE nominations over the past couple of years. Also, thank you to Marg Bond for her club member recognition nominations to Town of Mosman Park & Town of Cottesloe as well as Ditte van der Linde for the Clubs WA nomination. It is great to see our members being recognised in the community as well as within the club.

Grant & Community Chest applications were also submitted by Leesa Matier to Bankwest, Ditte van der Linde to Town of Cottesloe and Marg Bond to Town of Mosman Park. Leesa’s application was successful with funds used to increase kitchen utensils & equipment for use on Friday night and Sunday morning club activities. Administration will continue looking at all avenues of support to non-profit organisations this coming season.

Once again, the Annual Dinner & Presentation of Awards was spectacular and a fitting end to the season. Congratulations to the Committee, Marg Bond, Jo Suda, Joelle Matier, Eliza Jackson and Bella Cowie. Many commented it was the best ever so hope to see everyone there next year!

The Constitution is currently under a major review in line with the changes to the Associations Act of WA. Marg Bond and Joelle Matier have worked diligently on this for many months and hoped to present to the year’s AGM. However, after working on it in line with SLSA’s template for three full months and with an end in sight, SLSWA introduced a brand new template (not in line with SLSA) so they had to start again. They will meet with other Committee members, Paul Gerrard and Chris Inglis, for final discussion before sending to the relative Departments for approval.. Once obtained, the new constitution will be submitted to members for discussion and endorsement. Life Member & long term club member & competitor, Tash Leaversuch, has agreed to assist the committee with the major revamp to the existing By-Laws.

I wish all club members and volunteers all the best for the next season and I encourage all members to take the time and continue to volunteer their time and expertise to this wonderful club.

Susie Kay Secretary

Administration

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members and volunteers for their contribution to the Surf Club across Season 2016/17. Volunteers are the backbone of the Surf Club and it is obvious that without them we would not be able to achieve what we do. Thank you to everyone for taking time of out of your busy schedule to make the Surf club a succuss; whether this is one or many hours! Special thanks goes to the Administration Committee of Marg Bond (Registrar), Tania Hill and Gail Burling (Apparel Shop Coordinator) and Susie Kay (Secretary), for their assistance and contribution. I would also like to thank Ben Stephens for is ongoing teachings about Surf Life Saving and the Management Committee.

The Surf Club operates at its best when each member or officer undertakes their specific task or role. The office is in a privileged position to see all these goings on and to assist in the smooth running of the Club. As in any organisation it does become a struggle when communication gaps emerge, and lack of awareness of other’s or your own roles results in tasks being left to the last minute or overlooked. This does result in ‘reactive’ work in the office, which is not the most efficient way of supporting the Club, in terms of the unplanned volume of work on top of the regular tasks…there are only so many hours in a day!

Work on a new Club website and integrated calendar, together with the finalising of job descriptions for office bearing positions will hopefully help.

I look forward to seeing you all back on the beach in Season 2017/18!

Club Registrar Report

Dear Members

Cottesloe SLSC welcomes all new members who joined the club this past season. We look forward to you and our existing members have a long and rewarding association with the club for many years.

The challenges in membership continue to remain around nippers and we also note a reduction in Active 15 – 18 yrs Titan members rather than in the Cadets age group the previous season.

The table below details the different membership categories and number of members over the past three years.

375 members did not renew from last season – a reduction from previous years (463 did not renew from 2015 & 460 from 2014 season). All non-renewing members were contacted about renewal with most advising they were trying other sports this season.

We note that 31 families were amongst those who did not rejoin. It is worth noting that there were only five families in the Minnows age group (moving from the Under 6 to the Under 7 age group - 21 children in all) who did not rejoin and all five families had more than one child within the club. Based on this, it would not appear that fees played a part in the decrease in Minnows numbers for existing members.

Breakdown of the rest of the non-renewing membership records shows members who would have been in the following categories upon renewal: 19 x Under 19, 22 x Under 17 & 9 x Under 15.

Table below shows Membership Categories which recorded the majority of non-renewing members.

The Club had 336 new members join last season compared to 382 the previous season. See table below for comparison in majority of membership categories.

Whilst the numbers transferring to other Clubs appears high in the figures below, again the majority transferring were not current members - all bar 12 were members prior to the 2014/2015 season. Records also include four current members who transferred to & from Brighton SA SLSC to compete for them at the Australian Titles. Members who did not rejoin this season comprise 4 x Junior Activity members, 2 x Active 15 – 18 yrs, 2 x Active 18+ and one Long Service member. There was no real trend evident this season showing members transferring to any specific clubs:

To other Clubs: 5 to Fremantle (21 last season), 12 to North Cottesloe (13 last season), 6 to City of Perth & 7 to Fremantle.

From other Clubs: 4 from North Cottesloe (14 last season), none from Swanny (13 last season) and 3 from City of Perth.

Thank you to our loyal band volunteers at the Club’s Open Day in September who continue to support the club and provide invaluable insight in what being a member of Cottesloe SLSC means to our prospective members. As in previous years, Junior members continued to represent the majority of new members who join on the day. This event continues to play a vital role in attracting new members and showcasing educational services prior to the start of the season.

Renewal of online membership was strongly encouraged again last season as it alleviates hours of data entry for myself and the office administrator. Competition fees were liable again this season and it is hoped that the new Club Captain will take ownership and ensure members are advised that they will not be entered in carnivals unless they are fully financial, paid their Competition Fees & have completed their rostered patrols. Follow up has caused a major impost on time within Administration over the past two years when we could have been focusing on other areas.

Fees are currently due on 01 July each year but will be changed in line with the financial year with the new Constitution. With the changes to the Financial year from end June to end April, it would be great to see fees for the new season made a priority within Management before the end of April annually & before the current season ends and members go on leave or do other sports. This way we can let members know the fee structure immediately the season ends. We acknowledge Club finances and budgets are closely monitored by the Finance Committee, however, we recommend collaboration between Finance and Administration prior to Management endorsing any new fees for the next financial year so we can provide feedback from our dealing with members - as was done in previous years.

Thank you to the many volunteers and supporters who also assist me each year with the Cottesloe Classic Mile registrations. Your support to myself and the club helps make this one of the key fundraising events for the club. We hope to be down on the beach next year so we can be in the midst of it all – so see you there!

Once again, thank you to those on the Admin Committee (Susie Kay, Ditte van der Linde & Gail Burling) whose support of each other this past season was invaluable.

Please continue to tell your friends and family about the club & I look forward to seeing you all again next season.

Yours in Surf

Club Captain Report

First of all, competitors need to be proficient with a current Surf Rescue qualification, be financial and have paid their competition fees in order to compete during club events and represent Cottesloe Surf Life Saving at carnivals. Rostered patrol hours must also be completed for eligible members. For those age 15 years and over, a Bronze Medallion is needed to be able to use equipment and compete. The Surf Rescue Certificate is an age-appropriate qualification for under 14 years and under 15 years Cadet members.

Parents are always welcome and encouraged to join the club as Cottesloe is a well-known family-orientated club. The Nippers program was directed by our Junior Activity Officer, Glen Eldon, as well as Sam Cowie (Youth Development Officer). This Nippers Program runs for 90 minutes every Sunday morning from October to April, which allows children to be educated about Surf Awareness and Surf Rescue skills as well as many competitive Surf Life Saving Skills that have been proven transferrable to other sports. Certificates are awarded at the end of each season.

A numerous number of carnivals were held this 2016/2017 season, of which the major competitions are Club Championships, State Championships and the Australia Surf Life Saving Championships. Members can enter individual events and team events. Team selection for State Championships is based on their ability over the whole season. As a result of some emerging talent in the Cottesloe Titans (Under 14’s – Under 19’s), Boats, Rescue and Resuscitation, Masters and Board Riding, Cottesloe S.L.S.C moved up the ranks from the previous year. A special recognition goes to Sophie Lloyd (Under 17’s) who was selected to represent Western Australia at the 2016/2017 Australian Interstate Surf Life Saving Championships in NSW.

At the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, Jarrad Davies won gold in the Open Longboard Riding on the Gold Coast in April. There were other age categories represented including Opens, Masters Boats and Youth members. A special thank-you goes to all Officials, especially those from Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club, who dedicate their time volunteering to help keep all competitions running. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen Cyclone Debbie, many events were cancelled due to extreme weather conditions. Some of our competitors even had to relocate from their accommodation.

Water Safety I would like to show appreciation to all those club members who took the time to do water safety this year on Sunday mornings, at the Rottnest Channel Swim, Cottesloe Triathlon, Cottesloe Mile, SunSmart State Championships and Ocean and Beach Series hosted by Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club. Cottesloe members provide water safety to ensure the safety of all competitors and demonstrate a commitment towards community service.

14

Age Group Managers/Sunday Morning Activities Age Group Managers conduct each Sunday session by taking attendance, ensuring children are SunSmart and conducting Beach and Water-based activities designed for fun, fitness and surf awareness. Junior Age Groups start from Under 5’s until Under 13’s. The Age Group Category starts from the 30th September each year. An age-appropriate proficiency for their current qualification is usually held a couple of weeks prior to the season starting. Other activities provided by the club are board, ski, and beach races run every Sunday for those who are 14 years and older. Also, the very popular and iconic club swim around the pylon is held on Sundays, usually over 400m. The majority of the swims are handicapped and senior surf race club points are highly contested. In accordance with the By-Laws, members must attend 50% of swims, be proficient and be financial to win the trophy.

Board and Ski There are a number of board and ski training sessions to attend at Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club, with board sessions running all year around catering to all skills and age groups. The club is very lucky to have Pete, Natasha and Carla who are in-house coaches and who have all individually received gold medals at State Championships with Natasha receiving a number of golds at Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (the Aussies).

Boats Rowing boats is very technical and requires power to be generated from the back, legs and arms. The correct technique is needed to ensure legs produce most power. Cottesloe is lucky to have an experienced sweep in Jeff Burling as coach and mentor to the Under 19 and Under 23 male and female crews. We also have many other accomplished boat rowers of all ages, coaches, sweeps and officials. Thanks also to Doug Simpson who has been the Boat Referee for many years representing Cottesloe at all carnivals in WA and at the Aussies.

General Over the past season, I cannot thank my Competition Committee enough. Thank-you to my Vice-Captain, Age Group Managers, Co-Boat Captains, Board and Ski Captain and Beach Captain for all their dedication and the supportive yet competitive environment they provide. Not to forget in my team, Cottesloe’s specialised Board Coaches and the Handicapper who continue to commit their time & knowledge. There were many in the Competition Committee who went above and beyond their role and I thank them for their contribution over the years and wish them well in all they do in the club in the future. I look forward to the 2017/2018 season especially as the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships will be held in Western Australia.

Board and Ski Report

This year saw continued development in the Club’s board paddling pathway and the initiation of ski paddling opportunities.

Recognising that members participate in board & ski paddling for many different reasons, our plan has been to construct a system with three key outcomes: 1. active lifestyle 2. participation and 3. excellence.

In recent years we have seen a greater number of nippers progressing into Sunday morning senior activities with the foundation skills and interest to actively join in board races. It is vital this continues into the future. These efforts have underpinned the development of a sound paddling participation base. Each week it was common for over 60 x U/14’s, U/15’s, U/17’s and U/19’s to enter handicapped races that focused on personal bests. Sunday events were a highlight of the season & in particular the ‘all-age’ relays where teamwork and camaraderie were the main outcomes. A big thank you to the many members who reliably helped.

In particular:  Jim Lauro (chief starter and apprentice marshal)  Steppy ‘husband of Paula’ Redbond (ski handicapper and trainee starter)  Gail Robbo (Robertson), Helen Franks, Liz Ross (recorders)  Anthony Whelan, Brett Wood-Gush (set-up and marshalling)  Connie Nicoletti-Lewins, Robyn Thompson (photographer)

As the season progressed so too did participation in ski races. A field of 10 x starters, all U17 & U/19, in the final weeks before the States gave a glimpse of the Club’s future ski squad.

The more structured Sunday morning format also resulted in parents and friends showing a real desire to become more actively involved. Engaging and supporting these members should be a focus for next year.

The Club took a significant step toward establishing opportunities for our members to pursue excellence. Regular mid-week and weekend training was taken by Kane Cresswell and Carla Payne.

These efforts combined to produce some encouraging results at carnivals and State Championships. In particular at the States: Gold – U/17 Board Rescue – Sophie Lloyd and Maddie Hanlin Silver – U/17 Ironman – Sophie Lloyd Silver – U/17 Board Relay – Sophie Lloyd, Maddie Hanlin and Jessica Lewis Silver – U/17 Taplin Relay – Sophie Lloyd, Maddie Hanlin and Jessica Lewis Bronze – U/17 Ski Relay – Sophie Lloyd, Maddie Hanlin and Jessica Lewis Bronze – U/14 Cameron Relay – Millie McCarthy, Daisy Buchanan, Charlotte Thompson and Bella Poll

15

I encourage all board and ski squad members to reflect on the season past, consider their goals for next year and make the commitment to improving their performance in both training and competition.

Beach Captain Report

Beach competition this year consisted of flags and sprints; with every 3rd or 4th Sunday doing a 2km run.

Big thanks to all the competitors and especially the helpers; Drew Masters (flags), Pete Leaversuch (sprints), Jim Laurenson (2km run) and many many more who helped write down placings for races. Big thanks to Jesse Tucek and Riley Prentice for helping run Tuesday beach training sessions, taking over from Drew Masters and Stephan Gracie.

The beach events this season had a huge turn out with nearly all competitors taking part after water activities which was encouraging to see.

Handicapper Report

Starting with the most important thing, don’t be confused here by thinking that this is the results, it is the thank yous. There are so many people who give up their time week after week for little acknowledgement and thanks but without whom the race wouldn’t happen. So a huge thank you on behalf of myself, the swimmers and the club goes to:

 Jim Laurenson – this man can herd cats, but isn’t able to get the rabble that is the Cott Sunday swimmers from the teahouse to the start line. He’s also a timing demon.  Tamba (Trevor Maybank) – managed to make sure the course was accurate over the season, no matter what you doubters thought.  Helen Franks – famous for her head counts, or should I say bottom counts. You know you’re a contender when you get a poke on the bum as Helen counts you in. Also known for complaining that the handicapping is too good and making her job of recording the finish times too hard (lovely nod to myself there).  Sonja Madden – this woman doesn’t just know who you are, she also knows how to spell your name. Beware.  Gail Robertson – picking up the slack and helping out doing whatever, whenever.  Greg Madden – the backseat handicapper, always able to help with technology issues and setting up the website and of course auditing the weekly results.  Anyone else that I missed, especially those of you who watched over my child.

Whilst the season got off to a slow start due to beach closures, we were finally able to go and the usual suspects were all there to make sure they snapped some easy early season points, and, more importantly, the first complaints of the season. Paul Montaut you managed to snag the first complaint of the season, but you were most certainly not the last.

Trent Madden took out the first race and kept his form up over the season to take out the under 15’s trophy for the year as well as the Marbrook trophy. Trent was also the only swimmer who managed to retain their title from the 2016 season, what a season. Sadly for his dad, Greg, the numbers were not so kind, guess that’s what happens when you aren’t the handicapper anymore. Joke Greg! Biff (Anthony Paini) also showed similar promise in the B grade division taking the first race, running away with the division trophy, as well as the Huitenga Trophy. Perhaps on reflection of the season he should have been in the A grade. I’ll leave his categorisation issue to the next handicapper contender.

And so down to business, the winners were:

A Division Graham Pember Under 19 Riley Prentice B Division Anthony Paini Under 17 Nick Thompson C Division Graeme Johnson Under 15 Trent Madden

All in all, what a great season of competition! Whilst Biff and Nick Thompson ran away with the B grade and U17s respectfully, for the rest of you there weren’t more than 2 points between first and second for each division. An average of 42 swimmers turned up every Sunday, peaking with 61 for Steppy’s Groyne to Groyne Trophy event.

So thanks for a great season, even the weekly audit findings on the results from those of you who poured over the website results, and I’ll see you at the start line next year.

Masters Activities Co-Ordinator Report

Australian Championships North Kirra was the venue for this year with some pretty hefty waves pumping in over the sand bank and causing havoc. Numbers were down with only Rob Slattery and Stan Davies making the journey.

The single ski race was looking good as Rob and Stan turned the last can in second and third place respectively, but it was not the will of the surf gods and Rob was tipped off by a wave and Stan slewed sideways in the channel and both missed out. The Board Rescue for O/65 was the next race and a great swim by Rob getting to the can first set the race up for a convincing win. With a comfortable 25m lead, they picked up the Gold Medal.

Day two was the O/65 Double Ski. Rob & Stan were both fired up to have a win and looked on track leading all the way around the cans only to have the second team pick up a nice runner and relegate Cottesloe to the Silver Medal. Stan had one more event the O/60 Longboard Riding held at Miami on the Wednesday. Having not put the work in this season, the Bronze Medal was a pleasant surprise.

Jarrad and Stan Davies Gold Medallists Over 65 Board Rescue: Robin Slattery & Stan Davies

State Championships Due to a clash with the Rottnest Chanel Swim numbers were way down across the board for the Championships. This year the winners circle saw the 240yrs boat crew of Owen Ashby, Peter Rattigan, Ian Johnson, Peter Kuhne and Jeff Burling (sweep), Ian Vilkson in the O/65 Tube Race and Stan Davies in the O/65 Ski Race. Silver Medals went to Ian Vilkson in O/65 Surf Race, Stan Davies in O/65 Board Race, Rob Slattery in O/65 Ski Race, Stan and Rob in the O/65 Double Ski and the Stan, Rob and Ian in 170yrs Taplin Relay. Bronze Medals went to Stan in the O/65 Ironman and Stan Davies, Rob Slattery and Peter Ferguson for the 170yrs+ Ski relay. In the beach arena Stuart Cowie toiled away all day but was just out of medal contention.

240 Min Mixed Surf Boat Gold Medallists (Harmony Boat Crew): Owen Ashby, Jeffrey Burling (Sweep), Peter Rattigan, Peter Kuhne & Ian Johnson

The World Lifesaving Championships The Worlds were contested from 1st to 18th of September 2016 in the city of Eindhoven and Noordwijk in the Netherlands. With approximately 4,000 athletes, coaches and officials from 40 nations, the World championships is the largest lifesaving event conducted in the world.

Cottesloe Surf Club crafted an experienced team of four men (Stan Davies, Glenn Eldon, Rob Slattery & Stephen Redbond) and two women (Paula Redbond & Lisa Eldon) to make an assault on the 2016 Championships. The aim was to contest the Ocean Events, where their knowledge and skills had been honed in over decades of competition with the Cottesloe Surf Club. All members had their individual events sorted and had been training all over a cold Perth winter to get themselves in peak condition for racing. Selection of team events was important with the men’s teams being the same as the previous Worlds in France in 2014. The women were a little hesitant in the beginning being their first Championship but, after some discussion and gentle persuasion, the girls were ready to compete in their individual events and in the Board Rescue - the only event available for a two-person team.

The ocean events were held at Noordwijk, a popular destination by many Europeans for their summer vacation. One would expect fairly gentle and calm conditions but the morning of day one was far from that. With strong winds blowing throughout the night, quite a swell had been whipped up and organisers had trouble with the buoy’s breaking loose.

Cottesloe’s men (Rob Slattery, Stan Davies and Glenn Eldon) all have the Single Ski as their pet event with all having won this event before. When the gun was fired all three got away to a great start and led their fields all the way recording convincing wins by over 30 to 50 meters.

17

Not to be out done by the men, Lisa Eldon pulled off a surprise win in the Over 40 yrs Board Race, leading all the way and displaying some great surf skills, she caught a wave to put the result beyond doubt. Lisa teamed up with Paula Redbond in the Board Rescue where they won a bronze medal, a very satisfying result. The Ironman Race saw Rob Slattery O/70yrs and Glenn Eldon O/45yrs have good wins and Stan Davies O/65yrs managed a bronze medal. Rob and Stan teamed up to win the Over 65yrs Board Rescue - a favourite of theirs. After some stiff opposition from Half Moon Bay, Byron Bay and Northcliffe Surf Clubs, Rob, Stan and Glenn beat the current World Champions from France and managed to win a bronze medal in both the Ski Relay and Ironman Relay for over 170yrs. As a team Cottesloe Surf Club was the second placed club behind a much larger Surfers Paradise contingent out of 53 teams from around the world in the Ocean Events.

The next Worlds are in Nov 2018 at Glenelg Beach in South Australia.

Board Riding Report

Australian Surfboard Riding Championships

Miami Beach on the Gold Coast was the chosen venue for 2017. The surf was small and fluky during the Shortboard riding. Jarrad Davies was eliminated in the quarter final. During the Longboard Riding the waves were slightly bigger and better suited to a longboard. Jarred left his best till the final and won on all judges sheets defeating three times champion Anthony ‘Harries” Carroll from Bronte SLSC. In the O/60’s, Stan Davies was pleasantly surprised with the Bronze medal having not spent a lot of time on his board this year. Jarrad’s surfing saw him nominated for Open Athlete of the Year in the State Awards of Excellence for the second year in a row. Unfortunately he was not successful.

State Surfboard Riding Championships

Five surfers from Cottesloe struck gold when they competed in the Surf Life Saving Association State Shortboard Riding Championships. Leading the charge was Bella Poll, who secured a memorable win in the under 13 girl’s inaugural event with some controlled surfing. The under 17’s was dominated by twins, Oliver and Robert Line. The boys were on fire, with Oliver winning the gold and Robert, right on his tail, securing the silver. Stan Davies (65) managed a bronze medal in the over 50’s event, competing against surfers 15 years his junior.

The open men’s final was hotly contested with Jarrad Davies picking up the silver medal. The last event was the prestigious team event for four surfers – three are scored on two waves and the fourth is scored on three. The Line twins got Cottesloe off to a fantastic start and then power surfer Jarrad Davies put the result out of reach with scores of eight and nine on two of his three waves. This left Stan to catch his two waves and finish within the 60-minute time limit to help secure the gold.

Longboard State Championships

Secret Harbour was the venue for the Longboard Riding with some sizeable swells crashing down on the bank. The Open saw some outstanding surfing but nothing compared to Jarrad Davies dazzling display in the final eclipsing the final with a near perfect score of 9 on one of his waves. A memorable win. In the O/60’s Stan Davies was emulating his son but not with same spectacular surfing and claimed the Gold Medal.

Lifesaving Report

The 2016/2017 season has been a big year for the Lifesaving Committee and a massive learning curve for myself. I have been so fortunate to have my first year as Lifesaving Officer working together with such an awesome team such as Gemmaley Walsh, Chris Inglis, Peter Kuhne and Danny Savage. For Danny, Peter and myself it was our first year to take on a senior role in the club, which I think I can say for all has been challenging yet extremely rewarding. I am so very appreciative for all the support and advice I have had throughout the season.

Thank you to all those that have taken the time to help me through….I must have driven you nuts with all my questions. I definitely couldn’t have done it without you. I would also like to make a special mention and thank Ben Stephens and Chris Inglis who stepped in to take over Education at the beginning of the season when we lost our Chief Instructor.

Now down to the facts… For 2017 our patrolling operation consisted of 14 patrols, coordinated by Peter Kuhne. The season was a busy one with 292 of our active members patrolling for a total of 6826.5 hours. This was slightly down on the 2015/2016 hours of 7264 hours.

Top 5 Patrol Teams

Lahiff - 674 Addison - 570.75 Knight - 570.75 Redfern - 540 Hartley - 527.25

Our patrolling members assisted 142 cases of first aid and performed a total of 42 rescues. Most of the rescues were in shallow water, with 7 rescues requiring the use of the rescue board and the IRB. Our patrols also undertook a massive 1,014 preventative actions, with the majority of those being warning beach goers of potential hazards, such as jumping off the groyne.

Thank you to all our patrolling members for keeping our beach safe. In particular, I would like to thank the 12 members that completed 100% or more of their patrols – committed and reliable members such as yourselves are what make Cottesloe SLSC and our beach so awesome!!

Chief Instructor Report

The start of the season was difficult for the club’s trainers and assessors to conduct the proficiencies and awards with many planned sessions postponed due to either a build-up of seaweed or adverse weather conditions closing the beach. Although assessment conditions were very tough for some of the courses, the new members young and old persevered and received their awards.

This season, 224 of our existing patrolling members passed their annual Bronze Medallion (BM) proficiency along with 23 of our youth passing their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) proficiencies. We are also very proud to welcome 38 new Bronze and 40 SRC holders, five IRB Crewpersons and seven members who gained the Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management award, all of which have bolstered support for our patrol teams. This should put us in good stead for next season’s patrols. Well done to those new members commencing their patrolling experience within our great club.

None of this would have been achieved without the tireless efforts of our trainers and assessors. Special acknowledgment must extend to trainers Ben Stephens, Stephen Goddard and Dean Davidson (Bronze), Nick Hancock and Liberty Madden (SRC) and David Hounslow and Danny Savage (IRB) as well as trainee instructor, Eliza Jackson. Training courses is a thankless volunteer task and often done in the background, so it is important to recognise and thank these members for committing their time to furthering the interests of the club and being the first point of contact for new members.

Our Assessors were Ben Stephens, Stephen Goddard, Dean Davidson, Anthony Paini, Nick Hancock, Jean Burling and Kerryn Briody. They not only assessed proficiencies and in-house awards but also helped at a state level to meet our requirements for attending neighbouring surf club assessments. It was pleasing to see Liberty Madden and Luke Lumsden step up during the season completing the SLSWA Training Officer course. Various other members assisted with course sessions across the season and we thank them for their time.

A successful season is thanks to many people putting their hands up to help in whatever way they could, especially in our volunteer environment, so I encourage more members to assist and become qualified as trainers and assessors.

Patrol Report

My intention at the start of the surf season was to increase our patrol groups from 14 to 16, with obvious benefit of reduced patrolling hours for everyone. Unfortunately, this was not possible. Overall the patrolling season went well with most patrols well supported. Our volunteer patrols in particular were well supported.

I particularly wish to thank Mike Ivey and Anthony Panini for all the hours they put in during the Christmas and New Year period. They attended the incident at South Cottesloe on Christmas Day which unfortunately resulted in a negative outcome.

19

The Club has a core group of keen capable patrollers whom selflessly attend their patrols with no fuss. A big thank you to them. The young patrollers at the club have provided exemplary service and a particular mention to Emmalie and Jonathan Kaye. Emmalie in fact achieved the honour of Best Patrolling Member for the season. Moving forward, the Club needs more patrol groups so if you are interested in taking on the role of Patrol Captain, please let the Club know.

I have enjoyed working with all the Patrol Captains and hope that you are all returning to your roles if time permits for you.

I.R.B Officer Report

This has been my first year of being IRB captain and it has been very enjoyable season, It started with winter IRB racing in which we got a 3rd place in the Open Female IRB Mass Rescue at the State Championships.

We helped out this season with water safety for the Cott Mile, Cottesloe triathlon, Rottnest swim and Cottesloe to Swanbourne swim race which all went well. We also had the IRB in the water every Sunday morning whilst the nipper activities were taking place, keeping the parents happy that their loved ones were in good hands and safe.

We only had a chance to run one crew course which saw five new crew members put through.

Daniel Savage IRB Officer

First Aid Officer Report

To get the first aid gear ready for the season involved cleaning the first aid room, ensuring there was a ready rescue first aid kit and oxy-via kept in the training room, checking equipment was in good working order, completing a stocktake and ensuring all gear was serviced.

With the help of the Adminstrator, Ditte van der Linde, we tried to reduce costs in the first aid area by reducing the amount of oxygen bottles kept in the non-patrolling season. My job was made easier by club members and lifeguards informing me of equipment needed or replaced.

I would also like to thank the club members that helped to keep the first aid room stocked when I was injured.

Youth Development Officer Report

After three amazing years as Youth Development Officer it is time for me to step aside and handover the role to someone with fresh ideas & new enthusiasm.

It's been a great journey & I’ve met some truly wonderful people & made a lot of friends along the way. There is a wealth of knowledge, ability & experience within Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club & I have been very lucky to be supported in this role over the last few years by many. I encourage whoever takes on the role to use this wealth & add their own spin to help take the Club to even greater places.

Once again I'd like to thank Glenn Eldon for his tireless efforts with the Nippers at Cottesloe. He has been outstanding in his organisation of the weekly Sunday activities as well as for the many carnivals our nippers attended this season. The changes made by SLSWA with the separation of beach & water events meant that we were away at one carnival or another for what felt like most of the season! But Glenn still managed to ensure we had a tent, equipment & water safety at each event so our nippers were able to compete.

The AGMs have, as always, been fantastic. Thank you to Tracey Tchami, Amelia Carey, Bella Cowie, Carla Payne, Lisa Eldon, Bec Czaplinska, Craig Swain & Danny Savage for preparing & teaching our junior nippers to be outstanding lifesavers.

Thanks also to Elliott Cross, Alan Mercer, Rob Czaplinski, Sacha Locke, Jason Kennington, Marina Scully-Ward, Mark & Jacinta Duffy, Nick Broughton & Gary Matier for their enthusiasm & great effort in attending carnivals & helping our amazing senior nippers be the best they can be in competition but more importantly as surf lifesavers.

Our Titan & Senior members have again been privileged to have the support & mentoring of our senior AGM’s in their weekly club activities, as well as in carnivals. Many thanks to Brett Wood-Gush, Kane Cresswell, Tash Leaversuch & Anthony Whelan for managing our mighty Titans! Thanks also to Peter Leaversuch, Jim Laurenson, Helen Franks, Gail Robertson & Liz Ross for being part of this great team.

Additional training sessions have again been available to our youth to help them hone their competition skills - thanks to Stephan Gracie, Drew Masters, Carla Payne, Jeremy Mulcahy, Jason Kennington & Glenn Eldon.

Cottesloe’s motto “Vigilence & Service” is embraced by our members. From the nippers (& their parents), to the Vets & everyone in between, our members willingly give their time & skills to serve others; whether it is in service to our youth, in training them to be competitive & in turn serve others or in service to our club, in maintaining our facilities & fulfilling our obligations, or in service to the public or in lifesaving,

I am proud to be a part of an organisation that is run by a fabulous group of volunteers. And how lucky are we, to be able to do what we do at Cottesloe beach. As a wise person once said, “At the beach, life is different. Time does not move from hour to hour, but by mood to moment. We live by the currents, plan by the tides, & follow the sun.”

It has been both a pleasure & a privilege to be able to be a part of this fantastic surf club. Thank you for the opportunity.

Titans Report – U15’s to U19’s

The 2016/17surf season was another successful year for the Titans group (U14's - U19's inclusive). Thanks must go to our dedicated age group managers who assisted and emailed throughout the season:

U19 Anthony Whelan U15 Kane and Mikaela Cresswell U14 Brett Wood-Gush & Paul Thompson

Congratulations to the 38 club members who achieved their Bronze Medallion this season, the majority of the recipients came from the U17 age group. Acknowledgement to Ben Stephens and his helpers for instructing these members through this course. Also, congratulations to our 40 new Surf Rescue Certificate holders, all of whom came from the U14 age group. Thanks to Nick Hancock and Brett Wood-Gush for getting these guys through their first major qualification on their lifesaving journey.

Sunday activities were well attended and enjoyed by many. Most Sundays the weather gods were kind and we would have over 50 competitors competing in board/skis/relays/flags/sprints and 2km runs. Following our activities many of the Titans would then participate in the club swims. Thank you to our regular helpers, starters and recorders, Peter Leaversuch, Stephen Redbond, Jim Laurenson, Anthony Whelan, Tom Whelan, Drew Masters, Gail Robertson, Helen Franks and Liz Ross.

21

A different format was provided by Surf Life Saving WA for Carnivals this season, allowing more opportunities to compete while spending less time on the beach. A handful of Titans took these opportunities and those that did compete, performed credibly for themselves and our club. Thanks to Kane Cresswell for his ongoing support and presence at these events.

Coaches for our Titans this season include Stephan Gracie, Carla Payne, Kane Cresswell and Peter Leaversuch.

Also, thank you to our wonderful Titans photographers Connie Nicoletti-Lewins and Robyn Thompson, who captured many of our Titans in action at Sunday activities and carnivals.

Highlights of the season were the Club Marathon and the Senior Club Championships which were keenly contested by many of our Titans.

A list of winners and placegetters throughout the 2016/17 season is documented later in this Annual Report so I will not individually name everyone, however a special mention must be made of Sophie Lloyd (U17) who has consolidated on her previous form to have a great season this year. Sophie was selected in the State Team that competed in Queensland in January then she continued to train hard, with success at a club level as well as at a State level ably assisted by her teammates. Congratulations Sophie, well done.

Friday night Stubby Stakes were a bit of fun, with Trent Madden (U14) showing dedication and commitment to join both Mike Ivey and Julian Burridge on competing in 10 out of the 15 swims. Luke Lumsden (U17) provided the fastest swim time of the SS season with 5min 03sec.

Finally, thank you to all the Titans and their parents for their help and assistance throughout the year. It is a real team effort and, if the kids are happy, we are all happy.

Looking forward to the 2017/18 season.

Junior Activities Officer Report

The success of the Nipper program is not determined by the Junior Activities Officer but by the passion and commitment of our AGM’s and numerous parents who are engaged and assist in the development of our Nippers each Sunday. This season we had 17 AGM’s across 8 age groups and numerous helpers to encourage, nurture and protect our 340 Nippers in and around the ocean.

Our AGM’s have once again done a terrific job developing Cottesloe’s next generation of lifesavers and a special thank you goes to the following dedicated individuals:

U6 Tracy Tchami and Amelia Carey U10 Elliott Cross and Alan Mercer U7 Carla Payne U11 Rob Czaplinski and Sasha Locke U8 Lisa Eldon and Bec Czaplinskia U12 Marina Scully-Ward and Jason Kennington U9 Craig Swaine and Danny Savage U13 Mark and Jacinta Duffy, Garry Matier and Nicholas Broughton

Lisa Eldon & Bec Czaplinski with Santa Nippers with Roger Federer

Most of our Nippers embraced interclub competition this season and were more competitive at interclub carnivals, this is a trend I hope continues. There is so much opportunity for everyone to get involved and be part of the team at carnivals and I would especially like Cottesloe to be better represented in the R&R and Marchpast events next season.

The improvements in skills and fitness are a direct result of better preparation and the Nippers who attended the Beach and Water training sessions starting in winter had the most significant gains. These sessions would not have been possible without our volunteer coaches who we owe a big thank you to Stephan Gracie, Drew Masters, Jeremy Mulcahy, Jason Kennington, Elliott Cross and Marina Scully-Ward. Many hands make light work and it is great to hear the coaches and Nippers already talking about winter board training.

We had some great social events during the season starting with the Pirates of the Caribbean Disco in November & the Christmas Party in December where Santa had to beef up security after his mobbing from the previous year. The Friday night food vans were also very popular with our Nipper families.

The Club Marathon was also a great day with all age groups getting involved. The U9’s – U13’s were given the opportunity to complete the long course of 2.25km while the U6’s to U9’s completed shorter courses set by their AGM’s. Due to the involvement of parents, many of whom completed the course with their kids, the event was a huge success. The level of comradery amongst our Nippers was exceptional. The marathon results were; handicapped first across the line Flynn Czaplinski (U11) and the first girl to finish was Abby Colgan (U11). The fastest boy was Ethan Duffy (U13) in 17.38 and the fastest girl was Ashley Eldon (U12) in 20.18.

The Club Championships were run for the U9’s – U13’s age groups in conjunction with the Senior Club Championships. It was terrific to see our U9’s excel in their first opportunity to show off the skills they have learnt over the past four years of Nippers. There were plenty of hard fought races particularly in the flags arena and 25 different winners of club championships across five age groups. We are moving in the right direction, with our Nippers continuing to improve in all areas, which is great to see. All of our Nippers did a great job and it was a good practice run for the State Championships. Thanks to Drew and Stephan who ran the Beach Arena and our AGM’s for organising a great day for our Nippers.

The State Championships were held at Trigg Beach in March with small to flat surf conditions. Our competitors were confident in the conditions and achieved some excellent results. Once again the Cottesloe spirt shone through and quality overcame quantity. The committed group of Cottesloe Nippers were like a swarm of bees up and down the beach and in the water. The most pleasing part of the weekend was the culture of the group who all supported each other and shared in each other’s successes. Our Nippers who did not win medals gained valuable points for our club, tried their best, challenged and enjoyed themselves and were a vital part of the successful team. This was no more evident than when our Marchpast team flew the flag for our club finishing 5th.

Our final result for the State Championships was 6th out of 19 clubs in the Surf and Beach State Championship events up from 11th last year. Our medal tally increased from five last season to 18 with 12 of our Nippers winning gold medals and becoming state champions compared to one the previous year. The medal tally from the weekend was 4 Gold, 10 Silver and 4 Bronze, congratulations to these competitors.

The championships are a long demanding two days on the beach with so many people helping our team. You would have seen many great photos of our Nippers and I must thank Robyn Thompson for giving up her weekend to take these great photos. A special thanks also goes to our Water Safety: Stuart and Alasdair Cowie, Steve Nalty, Jonathan Kay, Tom Locke 3rd and Myles Kennington; Officials: Jean Burling OAM, Chad Burling, Gail Burling, Susie Kay and Ben Stephens & Setup Crew: Trevor Maybank (Tamba), Jim Laurenson, Jeremy Mulcahy (Jezza), and Anthony Paini.

The Junior Windup and Awards Presentation took over the entire clubhouse and car park to accommodate two water slides, face painting and crafts. The sausage sizzle and slushies were in the courtyard while the presentation of SLSA award certificates, trophies from the Marathon and Club Championships and Easter eggs took place up in the Don Morrison room. A big thank you to all of the parents who helped out and organised the event led by Pamela Italiano, Marina Scully-Ward, Judy Lucas and Naomi Lawrance. Thank you for organising this event which was a fitting end to a big season.

I wish our U13’s well as they leave the Junior Activities and move up to join the Youth area to compete at senior carnivals and start patrolling Cottesloe Beach. Next season the Australian Championships will be at Scarborough Beach and I encourage you all to be part of the event in some capacity. I hope we have provided you with fond memories and the skills and expertise to follow the path in surf lifesaving you desire whether that be lifesaving, training, community service, one of the competitive disciplines or all of these.

Finally thank you to our Youth Development Officer, Sam Cowie, for her help and support throughout the season.

I hope to see you all again next season.

Cottesloe Classic Mile Report

Once again the weather gods were kind, and the 2017 Cottesloe Classic Mile was held in perfect conditions on Saturday January 7th. A total of 515 swimmers registered for the events, a similar number to the 2016 races.

For the second year in a row we offered three separate races - the traditional mile swim, a 3.0 km race and a 400 m swim/wade event. The start line for the 3km race was adjusted to make it safer for swimmers.

Competitor numbers for the races were as follows:  400m: 41  3,000m: 113  1,600m: 361

Results: Male Female Solomon WRIGHT 18:21.2 First Jaime BOWLER 19:00.8 Simon HUITENGA 18:21.7 Second Chloe GREEN 19:01.5 William ROLLO 18:23.7 Third Heidi GAN 19:07.6

The Club was again supported by key sponsors: Mainpeak, Fun’s Back Surf and FINZ. Richard Lushey of Mainpeak continues to both support the event and also offer suggestions for future races. Mainpeak has been a generous supporter of the Club for many years now and this will hopefully continue into the future.

Key club members who continue to be involved with the event include Graham Pember (sponsor liaison), Margaret Bond (registrations), Steppy Redbond (course layout and starting), Jo Cammack (water safety), Mike Franz (setup and packup), Trevor Maybank (gopher), Owen Ashby (catering), Jim Laurenson and Gail Robertson (presentations) and Ditte van der Linde (back office). Joelle Matier commenced her traineeship with Marg & Gail.

We also thank Blue Chip Timing, through Stuart Fuller, who provide excellent registration, timing and results services for our event. With an event that stretches over 1.5km along the Cottesloe coastline, water safety is a major risk area. We are grateful for the many active members, both young and old, who turn up and provide water safety and first aid for the swimmers. There can never be too many red and yellow caps out there, so please make a note of the date of the next Cottesloe Classic Mile - Saturday, January 13th 2018.

Planning has already started for the 2018 event, and by the time this report is published the event registration page will already be open for entries. Key improvements planned for 2018 include:  Greater priority is to be given to promotion of the events through social media  Registrations, pre-race briefings, and presentations are to be held adjacent to the boatshed and terraces  Food options to be available from the boatshed  Energetic and knowledgeable announcer for the finish line  Possible instant time checking for racers at the finish area.

We are also considering different event options for future years. Stay interested.

Annual Street Appeal Report

Again the street appeal could possibly classify as the street appeal we never had. Out of the 80 tins received from State Centre, despite setting up in the courtyard prior to the appeal, we were only able to distribute approx. forty and most of these were mainly to the “Vets” and a few keen club members.

Club members have got to get behind this fund raiser which in the past has bought in up to $14,000; it is a simple thing to do to rattle tin for an hour and in that time you will collect approx. $100. The members of the public are only too willing to put their hand in their pocket and drop it into your tin, there is no need to solicit or be embarrassed and it can be a very friendly day with a lot of good banter from the public. We appeal to you to get behind the 2017 event and HAVE A GO.

Some twelve “Vets” collected with several taking multiple tins. The result was that the funds collected, were by far the worst we have seen in the history of the Street Appeal, at just some $3,200 (even worse than 2015) with approx. $2,653 of these funds being collected by the “Vets”. The best effort was from the Jim Laurenson and “Vets” chairman Rob Watkins, who manned the post at Booragoon shopping centre on their own, returning three tins full to the brim for a total of $1,154.35. Booragoon has been a great hunting ground for the street appeal over the years. Other fine efforts were put in by Jacinta Duffy, who collected $123.05 in the city, and Berkeley Allen who came in with $524.50.

Our thanks go to those who on the day gave of their time and to the counting house “staff” (Marg Bond, Gail Robertson & John Robertson) for their contribution. We also thank Samantha Cowie who dropped in to assist count.

We are confident that 2017 will see the club return with your help to the efforts of previous years, with a resulting increase in the amount collected.

Anzac Report

The club had the opportunity to display the Gallipoli 100 Surf boat at three events during the past season.

Spirit of Anzac, Centenary Experience This exhibition was conducted by the Australian War Memorial at the Perth Convention Centre on 29 November -11 December 2016. It gave the members of the public an opportunity to see exhibits from Australia’s contribution to the First World War and a century of service of Australia’s armed forces. Many of the exhibits from the First World War, 1914 – 1918 had not been on general exhibition apart from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

The club sought and received permission to display the Gallipoli surf boat in the exhibition as it contains the names of club members who went to the First World War as displayed in the clubroom’s honour board together all the Western Australians killed in the Gallipoli campaign. Cottesloe Surf Lifesaving Club has a unique situation as they are the only Western Australian surf lifesaving club to have members serve in the First World War. The display of the Gallipoli 100 surf boat gave members of the public the opportunity to view their family or relations details as displayed in the surf boat.

Acknowledgement is made to the following members who attended: Berkeley Allen, Owen Ashby, Graeme Johnson, Ian Johnson, Tom Locke and Mike McDonnell.

The Gallipoli 100 Surf Boat display was well received and many compliments passed to club members who manned the display and gave out information material.

Anzac Day 2017 – Cottesloe Civic Centre The Anzac Day service conducted by the Town of Cottesloe was attended by a record crowd. This service gave the club the opportunity to become involved in many ways as part of the service. The Town of Cottesloe sought to have the Gallipoli 100 surf boat on display again and it always draws a lot of attention from the public. Club members who were involved with the service were, Piper Tom Whelan, Australian flag raiser Owen Ashby, New Zealand flag raiser Anthony Whelan, Usher Graeme Johnson and the President David Hounslow who laid a wreath on behalf of club members.

The club will continue to remain involved in Anzac Day services at Cottesloe particularly in 2018 as this will culminate the period of the First World War, 1914 -1918. It is very important for the younger generation to remember the sacrifices club members have made to the club and country to make it such a wonderful place it is today.

Acknowledgement must be made of members Rob Turner and Tom Locke for their initiative and splendid effort in researching and recording the names of the club members within the surf boat who fought in the First World War and the names of all Western Australians (1023) who had died in the Gallipoli campaign.

Cottesloe Surf Lifesaving Club would like to thank the Town of Cottesloe for their invitation to participate in the 2017 Anzac Day service and in particular the Community Services Officer, Ms Sherilee Macready, for her outstanding skills in organising this and many community events on behalf of the Town during 2016 -2017.

Albany Surf Craft Challenge 4 June 2017 2 surf boat crews represented Cottesloe at the annual Albany Surf Challenge on the W.A. day long weekend, 4 June 2017. If you can imagine what Albany Harbour is like from within Princess Royal Harbour looking back at Mount Clarence, is the picture the Anzac troops would have seen as they left Albany bound for the Middle East and WW1. CottCafé Coordinator Report

The Cott Pylon Café has continued to play a significant part in the Club’s activities during the past season.

The Cott Pylon Café has not only provided another substantial income stream for the club (see accounts report), it has provided members of an all year meeting place to socialise and utilise club facilities, which would otherwise be underutilised. Gymnasium users stay for a coffee and a chat on opening days.

 The new coffee machine was purchased at a cost of $4,500 and installed on 17 August 2016  It has been serviced twice during the season, in September and March in line with recommended service criteria  Prices have remained at 2015 prices, which reflect that milk and coffee costs have not risen

26

 Profit from the Café has again topped $20,000 in line with expectations. See audited accounts for the exact figure. Profits from the Café since the coffee machine was installed have exceeded $200,000  A familiarisation course of the coffee machine conducted on 31 January 2017, resulted in two members taking paid Barista positions on Sundays.

Volunteer Baristas

The Café has continued to function on a volunteer roster drawn from the membership, and I would like to acknowledge the following 20 volunteer Baristas:

Owen Ashby Christopher Hall James Laurenson Gavin Ponton Tom Brown Dudley Harrigan Thomas Locke Snr Peter Rattigan Julian Burridge Simon Joel Michael McDonnell David Roper Patricia Carmichael Ian Johnson Lesley Meaney David Smith Dean Davidson Glendon Lane Greham Pember Tony Smith

The roster is drawn principally from Cottesloe Surf Veterans members (17). Working as a volunteer Barista is a great way to meet club members and parents, so if you want to become involved as a Barista, give me a call and a coffee machine familiarisation course will be arranged. Volunteering for Free is a wonderful way to give something back to the Club. The Cott Pylon Café was able to operate throughout the year with the volunteer baristas on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays and with the paid baristas of Jani Hanson, Joelle Matier and Beth Naim on Sunday mornings. Thank you Jani, Joelle and Beth for your efforts throughout the season. Marg Bond, Sam Cowie & Susie Kay & many age group parents all helped out of a Sunday. The well trained hard working Baristas have taken the standard of coffee provided to another level with comments “It is the best and cheapest coffee the western side of Marine Parade”

Acknowledgment and thanks are given to Samantha Cowie and Jo Suda and the parents for their untiring efforts in organising the cooking the sausage sizzle each Sunday morning. Tony Suda and Brian Christie did a wonderful job cooking sausages each Sunday. Kim Patterson, Tom Patterson and Paul Townsend were also called upon at short notice when the experts were unavailable. Several junior members and/or non- members gave their time by way of School Community Service to assist in the Café. Methodist Ladies College students Amy Ivey, Sophie Butler, Penny Major and Emilia Marshall turned up each Sunday morning without fail. Thank you so much for doing a great job handling the bread and drinks from the bottom bar area. The café is also staffed by a loyal band of helpers on the Club’s Open Day each September.

Additional Healthy Food Choices were prepared and provided by a dedicated band of helpers led by Leesa Matier & Janice Stephens. These included Margaret Bond, Joelle Matier, Lara Matier & Susie Kay and many parents for which I thank them for their hard work in very crowded work place at times. These Healthy Food Choices gave club members additional choice to the usual café takeaway fare.

Tom Brown and Patricia Carmichael considered opening the Café during the week when Sculptures By the Sea was at Cottesloe. They had great success selling coffee and cake given the little on offer around Cottesloe Beach. Others to assist were Julian Burridge, Jenny Davidson, James Laurenson and Owen Ashby. Frozen ices and ice creams are an area identified for future sales as many members of the public asked for them, particularly during the hot weather at the time.

Many thanks to Drew Randell and Phil Buzzard from the IGA store Eric Street who donated $270 through their Loyalty Shopper Docket Program, being 2% of purchases from the store. Members, please continue to support them as the club benefits from this initiative – let them know you are from Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club and they will swipe our Club Card for every purchase from a club member.

My penultimate thanks are given to Charles Anton Nash for his worldly advice on how to operate the Café and his ever reliability in cleaning and tidying up. Graeme Johnson also assisted in keeping the Café orderly throughout the season.

Finally a big thank you to you all, particularly the wonderful parents of Nippers who have assisted and supported the Café on Sunday mornings, as without you the Cott Pylon Café would not operate as successfully as it has during the 2016/17 season and I look forward to another successful year.

Maintenance Officer Report

The following maintenance was undertaken during the season:  Installed stainless steel hand rails in both male and female ablutions  Renewed skirting and shower tiles in female ablutions  Repaired cracked broken tiles in both male and female ablutions  Removed pine tree leaves from south side of building following heavy rainfall in March that flooded the gymnasium  Renewed numerous hand soap dispensers, privacy locks, coat hooks paper towel holders and toilet roll holders in both ablutions  Relocated 2nd pie warmer to bottom bar area from Café after installation of new pie warmer to Cafe  Installed stainless steel table and paper towel holder in bottom bar  Periodically apply CRC to all door locks/hinges  Prune and fertilize roses  Repair umbrellas and holders to BBQs  Periodically empty sand trap outside entry gate  Replace damaged sprinkler fittings in front car park and reset system  Fit shelving to outdoor BBQ trolleys x 2  Seal both sides of ceiling/wall space between office and training room  Replace and or repair taps and showers at both club house change rooms and boat shed The maintenance program could not have been undertaken without the assistance of Graeme Johnson and the worldly advice of Brian Christie. Assistance was also freely given by Mike Ivey and Myles Kennington. Special mention should be made to Ian Vilkson, Rod Sarson and Bruce Simpson who trimmed the edges and mowed the courtyard lawn each week.

Both Graeme and I felt like “2 x Dutchmen, each with a finger in the dyke” continually repairing or replacing items as the building nears its use by date.

Bar Manager’s Report

The bar was a mixed bag this season. Socially Friday nights were a great success thanks to the efforts of Leesa Matier, Jo Suda and their dedicated work force (often their children). Jo also took point on a great 80s night party that was well supported by members and friends of Judy Lucas who was celebrating her 50th!

Financially however the result has been terrible. This was largely the result of a half executed strategy to focus on members, where more choice was provided across the bar lines, Foxtel was engaged, lighting was improved in the female toilet, table clothes and new glassware was sourced. These steps were taken with the view of offering a more accessible social membership which would only have access to the social side of the club as distinct from the change rooms and the gym. As this didn’t happen there were considerably fewer bar users than expected. There was also a down turn in functions hosted, which has been a reflection of the whole hospitality industry over the last 12 months, but principally for us reflects a price point that was too high in the current market and the condition of the building.

The lack of universal access has also hit home, most directly in the $20,000 less from the Sculpture by the Sea hire, but also in preventing the hiring of the facility for ‘public’ style events such as art exhibitions and pop up shops which had previous been a source of bookings. As the bookings are often 8 to 12 months out, recent amendments to the hire fees has resulted in more bookings leading into November and December, however it will likely take capital investment in the space to return it to an inviting space for ‘members’ private functions’.

Special thanks to Jo Cammack for her assistance in our wine supply and Ruth Turnbull in undertaking a wine training course for the staff. Speaking of the bar staff, thanks in particular to Mike Cuttler, Claire Ross, Eliza Jackson and Joelle Matier who have been the main stayers of the bar staff and also to Jani Hanson, Jim Laurenson, Mike McDonnell and Stuart Cowie for jumping in an helping from time to time.

As I return to a role I’m more successful at, I wish the future incumbent all the best!

Veterans Report

Who are we and how do we fit in? A member’s cycle is usually made up of Nippers, Titans, Active Senior, Long Service and then us. We are a group of people, many who are still members of the Club, but also a lot of past members. We, like the Club in its earlier days of assisting to create Surf Life Saving WA, have also extended our membership to members of other Clubs. Our objective is to assist the Club in both a financial and a practical manner. Mostly we have the time to seek methods of raising funds and have the ability to have the members to service these needs. In other words, we are prepared to give a little extra over and above being a member of the Club.

From a financial sense, this past year we have donated $4,000 to the Club. Over our history this has now reached a total of $100,000. In addition we supplied a strong workforce for the annual Street Appeal. This money in totality goes to the Club. This additional source of funds adds strength to service a somewhat severe budget to run the Club, so it may provide the facilities that we need.

28

As a workforce, it may have been noticed that many of the barista’s in the Cott Café (apart from Sundays) are Vet members. It will be noted in the financial report that this area is also a good revenue earner to assist the management in the running of the Club. The group of people that assist run the points races each week are Vet members.

From a maintenance area, we have provided better conditions in both the female and male change rooms. Had you noticed the new skirting and the replaced tiles or did you just believe that “Sum Wun” provided this without considering the cost? When the gymnasium flooded after the heavy rains in March, the Vets cleared the pine leaves to prevent this happening again. All this assists the Club in keeping to a budget and still provide good facilities to its members. Apart from these more major items, there were many instances where additional assistance was required - a tap needed to be replaced or an additional pie warmer sourced to help out the café. Most of the general maintenance around the Club was carried out by Vet members as noted in Owen’s report.

So, if you wish to give a little back to the Club that has provided superior training over your active time at the Club, we invite you to become a member.

On behalf of the vets, we wish the Club a successful year and thank you for the opportunity of being in continuing assistance. The need to belong to a Club such as this is both compelling and rewarding.

Rob Watkins Chairman

Perpetual Foundation Fund

As Chairman, I report that the Foundation Board of Trustee comprising Robert Watkins, James Laurenson, David Hounslow and Margaret Bond together with myself met three times during the year.

The role of the Trustees is to manage and administer the Fund and I thank these members for their contributions during the year.

I am happy to advise the Fund cash in bank balance at 30th April 2017 was $477,416 and total interest received was $1,782. Donations for the year totalled $19,860 ($4,000 from our Vets, a contribution from the Club of $15,400 & a donation of $460 from the Madden family). We are pleased to note that $450,000 was invested earlier this year in higher interest Government Guaranteed Term Deposits for a term of 12 months which resulted in the higher interest accrued. Thanks to Greg Madden for his talk to the Committee, Marg Bond and James Laurenson for their contact with the relevant financial institutions and Marg for the preparation of the necessary paperwork and setting up the investments. A long & arduous task.

It is important that members are aware that as a Perpetual Fund capital is preserved, the Club’s Management Committee can only access five percent of the Fund without having to call a special general meeting for the purpose and obtaining a majority at that meeting to access funds in excess of this percentage.

I thank all donors to the Fund and can assure them that any such contributions will be properly managed and applied for the benefit of the Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club.
