Palaces, patrician houses and mosques incorporate elements of Baroque style; new European techniques and decorative touches that recall Italian arts are evident at the same time as the increased use of foreign labour. 1810 - 1880 Tunisia Fine And Applied Arts A new lifestyle develops in the luxurious mansions inside the medina and also in the large properties of the surrounding area. Mirrors and consoles, chandeliers from Venice etc., are set alongside Spanish-North African furniture. All manner of interior items, as well as women’s clothing and jewellery, experience the same mutations. 1810 - 1830 Tunisia Economy And Trade Situated at the confluence of the seas of the Mediterranean, Tunis is seen as a great commercial city that many of her neighbours fear. Food and luxury goods are in abundance and considerable fortunes are created through international trade and the trade-race at sea. 1810 - 1845 Tunisia Migrations Taking advantage of treaties known as Capitulations an increasing number of Europeans arrive to seek their fortune in the commerce and industry of the regency, in particular the Leghorn Jews, Italians and Maltese. 1810 - 1850 Tunisia Migrations Important increase in the arrival of black slaves. The slave market is supplied by seasonal caravans and the Fezzan from Ghadames and the sub-Saharan region in general. 1810 - 1930 Tunisia Migrations The end of the race in the Mediterranean. For over 200 years the Regency of Tunis saw many free or enslaved Christians arrive from all over the Mediterranean Basin. -

OPINION - 08 APR 2017 documenta 14: Benaki Museum The third in a series of our editors initial impressions from documenta 14 Athens, Jennifer Higgie on the Benaki Museum B Y JENNIFER HIGGIE During the press conference on 6 April that launched documenta 14 in Athens, the artistic director, Adam Szymczyk, made an impassioned plea: he asked us to unlearn what we know and immerse ourselves in the darkness of not knowing. He also declared: We must assume responsibility and act as political subjects instead of simply leaving it to elected representatives. Now thats what I call a mixed message. Surely, to become a political subject means discovering how to instigate change, which would, Id assume, involve a great deal of learning not its opposite. And as for unlearning: while Im the rst to admit my ignorance of many things, I also like to think that some of the stu I know isnt so bad. Although Szymczyks request obviously stems from a desire to prise open closed minds, the reverse also holds true: the darkness of not knowing is what got much of the world into the mess its in today and I, for one, dont particularly want to immerse myself in it. It begs the question: was Documentas director being ironic when he titled the show Learning from Athens? I assume not, as many of the themes that have dominated Greece over the past decade economic instability, the refugee crisis, political extremism are the ones that shape this enormous, multi-faceted exhibition. The strength of Learning from Athens lies in its recognition of the worlds and by association arts complexity. -

by Konstantinou, Evangelos Precipitated primarily by the study of ancient Greece, a growing enthusiasm for Greece emerged in Europe from the 18th century. This enthusiasm manifested itself in literature and art in the movements referred to as classicism and neoclassicism. The founda- tions of contemporary culture were identified in the culture of Greek antiquity and there was an attempt to learn more about and even revive the latter. These efforts manifested themselves in the themes, motifs and forms employed in literature and art. How- ever, European philhellenism also had an effect in the political sphere. Numerous societies were founded to support the cause of Greek independence during the Greek War of Independence, and volunteers went to Greece to join the fight against the Ottoman Empire. Conversely, the emergence of the Enlightenment in Greece was due at least in part to the Greek students who studied at European universities and brought Enlightenment ideas with them back to Greece. This new movement was founded by Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717–1768) (ᇄ Media Link #ab), who identified aesthetic ideals and ethical norms in Greek art, and whose work Geschichte der Kunst des Altertums (1764) (ᇄ Media Link #ac) (History of the Art of Antiquity) made ancient Greece the point of departure for an aestheticizing art history and cultural history. -

In 1928 he enrolled at the School of Fine Art, Athens to study painting under Constantinos Parthenis, Spyros Vikatos, Georgios Iakovides and Dimitris Biskinis, graduating in 1933. Between 1930 and 1934, he also studied with Fotis Kondoglou who introduced him to Byzantine painting. In 1935, Tsarouchis spend a year in Paris, where he studied etching at Hayterre studio; his fellow students included Max Ernest and Giacometti. -

GEORGE ZONGOLOPOULOS George Zongolopoulos (Athens, 1903-2004) Was One of the Most Important Greek Artists and Representatives Of
GEORGE ZONGOLOPOULOS George Zongolopoulos (Athens, 1903-2004) was one of the most important Greek artists and representatives of the so called “Generation of 1930s” with diverse and internationally recognized work. The work of the artist, who was often called the “eternal teenager”, extends across the unusual vector of time of almost eight decades, and its rich range of subject matter is characterized by incessant renewal. Biography George Zongolopoulos was born on March 1st, 1903, in Deligiorgi Street in the center of Athens, while his place of origin was the village Manna or Markasi in Corinth (as Zongolopoulos narrated to his family the real year of his birth was 1901 and not 1903 as is appeared in all his official documents). He grew up in a family of lawyers that did not encourage him to deal professionally with art, although he showed a special inclination towards painting and drawing from childhood. He served his military service as a sergeant until 1923 and during that period he met his peer and later important Greek architect Patroklos Karantinos, who became one of his closest friends and colleagues. First years of apprenticeship o National Technical University of Athens, Athens School of Fine Arts (1924-1930) In 1924 he entered the Athens School of Fine Arts and studied sculpture under Academician Thomas Thomopoulos. In his student years he expressed with militancy his opinion on the need for modernization and reorganization of teaching, and also on the need to increase the School‟s budget. His attitude towards the academicism of the School and his participation in the “occupation” of the School by its students in 1929 meant for the young Zongolopoulos expulsion from the School for a year.
