  • Olivier Assayas
[email protected] • www.janusfilms.com “No one sees anything. Ever. They watch, but they don’t understand.” So observes Connie Nielsen in Olivier Assayas’s hallucinatory, globe-spanning demonlover, a postmodern neonoir thriller and media critique in which nothing—not even the film itself—is what it appears to be. Nielsen plays Diane de Monx, a Volf Corporation executive turned spy for rival Mangatronics in the companies’ battle over the lucrative market of internet adult animation. But Diane may not be the only player at Volf with a hidden agenda: both romantic interest Hervé (Charles Berling) and office enemy Elise (Chloë Sevigny) seem to know her secret and can easily use it against her for their own purposes. As the stakes grow higher and Diane ventures into deadlier territory, and as Sonic Youth’s score pulses, Assayas explores the connections between multinational businesses and extreme underground media as well as the many ways twenty-first-century reality increasingly resembles violent, disorienting fiction. Fairlie, ’Modern-day Witch of L.A.: A Profile of Marnie Weber’ Spring 2014, p. 2 - 7 Modern-day Witch of L.A. A Profile of Marnie Weber by Ariane Fairlie “When your subconscious is creating dreams it creates images & juxtaposes them.” Marnie Weber is a modern-day witch o f Los Angeles. Her diverse artistic practice spans mu- sic, video, performance, costume design, and, of course, collage. Her mythology is spellbind- ing as you become acquainted with her strange characters and domain. Ghostly dolls, clowns, and animals such as bunnies, bears, and mice are all returning roles in her grand narrative. Weber’s imagination is refreshingly youthful; she is prolific but seemingly unencumbered. Driven by longing and romanticism, she delves deeply into her childhood to feed her production. Weber’s engagement with collage coincided with her career in the alternative rock scene, performing with The Party Boys and Perfect Me in the 80’s and afterwards making two solo albums: Woman with Bass (1994) and Cry for Happy (1996). She began her collage practice by creating a limited edition of 100 handmade collages, distributed on one side of her LP album covers. She says the experience was like a boot camp to understand collage. Since then, she has created album covers and promotional posters for many musical acts, most notably the cover for Sonic Youth’s A Thousand Leaves.

  • Sonic Youth: Celebrity DIY
Essays — Peer Reviewed ZoneModa Journal. Vol. 7 (2017) https://doi.org/10.6092/issn.2611-0563/7585 ISSN 2611-0563 Sonic Youth: celebrity DIY Alice Militello Pubblicato: 29 dicembre 2017 Abstract In New York City’s early ’80s music scene and beyond, the band Sonic Youth represents a special case of the celebrity’s concept. It cannot be reduced to the record sales or scandals, like other famous people. They don’t have the typical self-destructive streak of the stars of the show business, which is the basis of the fortune and, at the same time, the defeat of other musicians. They don’t even have the cult of personality, which has destabilized other crews of the time. However Sonic Youth, during their three decades of career, have been able to find a space in the music scene, to involve a broad segment of audience and lovers; becoming a kind of model for younger generations of musicians. Furthermore, the members of Sonic Youthcan be considered such as influencers ahead of his time, thanks to their ability to find new talents. The present study aims to analyze the concept of celebrity applied to the Sonic Youth language, from 1981 (starting year) to 1994, the year of Experimental Jet Set, Trash No Star album, which brings the group to that DIY (Do-It-Yourself) punk ethics that denotes them from the beginning; to plot the New York’s environment in which they fit; and how the entry into the mainstream world changes the aesthetics of the group. In other words, the research is a breakthrough of the band’s long career, marking the highlights that made them the Sonic Youth.

On the surface, the film follows Diane (Connie Nielsen) who works for VolfGroup, a hugely powerful conglomerate that is negotiating the acquisition of TokyoAnime, whose revolutionary pornographic 3-D manga is set to annihilate the competition in an extraordinarily lucrative market. Two companies are battling for exclusive rights to Volf’s new images on the Web: magnatronics and Demonlover. MAgnatronics has recruited Diane to torpedo Demonlover from within and she finds a connection with the latter company and an interactive torture Web site known as “The Hellfire Club.” However, Diane is soon challenged every step of the way by her amoral colleague (Charles Berling), and antagonistic and mysterious assistant (Chloe Sevigny) and an outspoken, pot-smoking American executive (Gina Gershon). Brilliantly shot by Denis Lenoir (who previously collaborated with Assayas on films such as Late August, Early September and Cold Water), the film captures a culture spiraling out of control in which reality is posited as a video game and where every twist escalates the film to a new level.

  • Tony Oursler Sound Digressions: Spectrum 08 Sept > 28 Oct 2017 Press Release
TONY OURSLER SOUND DIGRESSIONS: SPECTRUM 08 SEPT > 28 OCT 2017 PRESS RELEASE Tony Oursler belongs to the generation which renewed the use of video by freeing it of the limits inherent to the television screen. His works cannot be reduced to the video image itself but are made of complex systems which are at the borders between sculpture, drawing, installation and performance. He is one of the essential figures in the recent history of multimedia and video art and he has been deeply involved with sound production since the 1970s. He composed and designed many soundtracks for his video tapes and installations throughout the years. Many of these have been released in various forms. He also founded the band The Poetics with Mike Kelley and has collaborated with many musicians, notably, Tony Conrad, Kim Gordon, Glenn Branca, David Bowie, Thurston Moore, Jim Shaw, Arto Lindsay, and Beck. HITHERTO UNSEEN INSTALLATION AT GALERIE MITTERRAND While at California Institute of the Arts, Oursler studied with John Cage and worked with the Paik-Abe synthesizer. These formative experiences are evident in his multimedia work, which often involves chance strategies, which occur in his installations. With the Sound Digressions series, Oursler continues this experiment by working separately with 7 notable performers and combining these recordings in a perpetually phasing, playback system. The resulting installations have the effect of a living, ever changing composition for the viewer. These musical performances, shot in 2005, were originally conceived as raw material for the seven-part series, based loosely on the relationship between sound and the color spectrum.

Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.
