With the track waterlogged Nottinghams's challenge match against Rye House was called off on Tuesday morning and will now, weather permitting, be held this Wednesday March 26. Considerable credit therefore to track preparation man Colin Meredith, even if his expertise could not prevent an undulating surface. In the circumstances though a reasonalbe meeting. If a night for care and caution rather than heroics, dashing Bob Garrad was in a class of his own, clocking consistently faster times than anybody else. However his dominant display was not sufficient to save Rye House from defeat. Indeed victory, no matter by only a one-point margin, provided a supremely satisfying outcome for Nottingham. Tenacious Glenn McDonald and battlling Craig Featherby were their notable successes. John Homer supplying reliable support and Mark Collins demonstratinghis possibilities with an impressive reserves' race win. Bob Garrad dropped his only point to Dave Perks in Heat 11, while his team-mate Ashley Pullen let one-slip alson to Perks in Heat 5. Perks scored 13 for his five rides. Colin Ackroyd was unlucky and worth at least double his score. He won Heat 2 and four later was leading for a lap until passed by Kevin Smith. His machine then slowed and stopped. In Heat 8 he was brought in as a reserve and was set for a 5-1 when his machine again slowed on this occasion he scored a point but the following race he had to retire once more. Although Rye won their opening home League match, Oxford must be counted as unlucky. There was a bumper crowd to witness Peterborough's opener and what a superb meeting it was.
