Chairperson’s Report

It seems that each year when I come to sit down and write this report even more has changed than I could have imagined since the last year’s report.

In the past twelve months Fresh has seen a lot of change. We’ve got a new GM, another new breakfast team, some new board members, and we’ve been embarking on a new review of the station and how it works.

What hasn’t changed, however, is the passion and dedication of the Fresh team, from the volunteers to the Board to the staff. It is that passion which keeps us going, and which will see us succeed moving into the next stage of evolution.

This report cannot be written without paying tribute to a person who has made a significant contribution to Fresh and its success. This year we said ‘farewell’ to Troy Sincock, our long serving General Manager. Troy served as GM from 2004- 2007 and then again from 2011 to 2018. During his time, Troy has helped to steer the station through innumerable challenges, and he has been at the helm during many of our greatest successes. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Troy for his efforts and dedication to the station.

Troy’s large shoes would never be easy to fill, but we have been thrilled to welcome our new GM, Dave Shearer who is equal to the task.1 Dave brings a wealth of experience to the station, as well as a fresh2 approach to how things are run. With Dave on board, the station continues to sound great, and our listener figures show just how strong Fresh’s brand is.

Along with Troy, we have in the past year said farewell to a number of other Fresh staff, all of whom have moved on to new exciting careers. I would like to pay tribute to Ryan, Cam and Alex, Bianca, Mariah, and Tess. Whilst I am sad to see all of these amazing people move on from Fresh, I am proud that it is representative of Fresh’s continuing tradition of helping people in their career progression, and laying the foundations for success.

From a content perspective, Fresh has had incredibly encouraging results. The most recent McNair Survey of radio listeners in South shows that Fresh is achieving a weekly listenership of 159,000 people, an amazing result that places Fresh above the like of and FiveAA, an outstanding feat for a community radio station.

It has been another tough year financially, but our sales team have been working hard to keep sponsorship coming in, and in recent months we have seen an uptick in sponsorships coming in.

We are grateful to Arts SA for a grant which has allowed Fresh to undertake a review of its operations from both a content and commercial perspective. The reviews undertaken by industry experts Phil Dowse and George Fiacchi have analysed the station from every angle, looking at what we do well, where we can improve, and what lessons can be learnt for the community radio sector as a whole. Whilst the reports are still in the process of finalisation, the results of the work George and Phil have conducted are already being felt in the way the station sounds and is operated.

I finally would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Board members who stepped down this year, Emma Georgiadis and Simone Douglas. They have both made valued contributions to the station, and I am grateful for all they have done. I have also had the pleasure of welcoming Kelly Noble and Caroline Tucker to the Board, their fresh perspective on matters is already showing benefit to us.

Finally I would like to thank the Board, staff and volunteers. We do everything we do at the station for you, and I hope that we continue to deliver a station that you are proud to be associated with.

General Manager’s Report

Firstly, I’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone who has made me so welcome in my new role. As I have told many people, I believe this is one of the most exciting media opportunities in South Australia and I appreciate the support I’ve had so far. It’s been great reconnecting with many Life Members who have been passing on their knowledge and information which has helped me gain a deep understanding of where we have been, and more importantly, helping with the vision we are creating in our 20th year.

We’ve all heard the stories about it being a challenging market and how tough it is out there in the media landscape. It’s true, and in my many years of radio experience around the world, it’s as tough as it has ever been. The good news is that we have a team that are well prepared to meet those challenges head on and “make a difference”.

Since my arrival in mid-April there have been many challenges and some refocus on the business has helped us all to overcome them and prepare for the next 20 years of Fresh 92.7.

I’m extremely proud of the can do attitude of our staff who all go above and beyond each day. Most people are doing the work of 3 or 4 people in the world of commercial radio and their dedication has impressed me immensely. The station is nothing without our volunteers and I thank each and every one of them who work tirelessly to help us achieve the success we’ve had this year. We can’t do it without you and I’d encourage anyone who’d like to get more involved to join us as we have some great plans moving forward.

It’s no secret that things have been, and continue to be financially challenging. Revenue is increasing thanks to a greater in-market presence, however in these financially challenging times we can’t rely solely on sponsorship dollars. I acknowledge the great work our sales team does in such a competitive market.

We’ve increased our grants process (thanks to Tiff Downing for your superb efforts with this) and are confident we can see an increase in the new financial year. We need greater variety in our revenue streams and are open to any suggestions, as well as an open invitation to help put those plans into action.

We also need to diversify and move with greater speed. We cannot just rely on being a radio station if we are to ensure long-term survival and there are plans being worked on that look deeper into what we can do with our loyal and dedicated audience. 159,000 people listen to Fresh 92.7 for an average 12+ hours each week. The passion for our brand is incredible and we are aware of the need to form greater relationships with them. There will be some huge changes to the radio landscape in 2019 in South Australia and it clears a path for us to own a largely unchallenged portion of the listeners who are unhappy with their current choice of station, and will continue to look for something different.

We are aware that since my arrival we have been working largely “in” the business because that’s what has been needed. We are now working more “on” the business and we are always keen to hear thoughts, ideas, comments and support that will help us grow.

There’s a lot of love for Fresh 92.7 in this region and we want to continue to play an important part in SA’s future.

Thanks for your continued support.

Consulting Director of Sales’ Report

An increasingly positive year and future with a strong sales pipeline ahead of us.

Just over a year ago we started with a 100% new sales team, this meant 3 new account executives to train up and hit the ground running plus also finding a new Sales Support which directly impacted revenue and relationships in market.

To add to this in the past year we have seen a new breakfast show, loss of Ryley our anchor in drive a new General Manager plus been through numerous internal and external reviews.

These all affect sales revenue in the way of lost time, relationships in market, intel and of course manpower as the focus moves to recruitment and training vs focusing on sales.

What I am VERY pleased to report on is the current team at Fresh and now under the strong and experienced leadership of Dave Shearer.

Everyone is multi-tasking, working around the clock and doing an exceptional job in keeping us on air but a massive increase in sales revenue coming through to the station based on the previous year.

Currently our local market is not in growth and our sales people are having many more competitors to keep fighting for our share of voice.

I am very proud of all our people on the ground.

We have continued with a lot of our major station partners and thank the likes of MyBudget, SANFL, CMAX and our Government clients and agencies especially Wavemaker and Carat.

An abundance of new business wins like – Anytime Fitness, HQ complex back on board, Paradise Motors, SA Housing Centre, Marketing Sweet, Boost Juice, Flight Centre and the list goes on.

From a numbers point of view, everybody has got right behind the sales team and from a calendar year perspective year on year I can report an increase of 22% YOY uplift in sponsorship revenue, which equates to around $140,000k up on last year same time.

Client retention is very strong and more importantly clients are getting great results on Fresh as we now focus on monetising all our other non-traditional channels such as social, digital, etc.

We are always on the lookout for more volunteers, sponsors and talent banking for staff so if you think you can help then please let us know.

Huge thanks to everyone contributing and helping on a daily basis and here’s to an even stronger 2018/19 Period!

Regards,

Darren Pike Consulting Sales Director

Crony Awards

Each month, Fresh 92.7 staff and members have the opportunity to vote for one volunteer to win the inaugural Crony Award. This initiative was created to acknowledge the outstanding behind-the-scenes work of dedicated volunteers and contributors who help the station to thrive. Over the past year, our ‘Cronys’ have exceeded expectations, and are a great showcase of diversity, initiative and talent.

JULY 2017 Production Interns aka Prod Squad!

This is just the second time in history the ‘volunteer of the month’ has been awarded to a group. There’s good reason for this exceptional award though. Production Engineer Marty Haros has created an outstanding curriculum for emerging audio producers with volunteers joining as from all sorts of pathways, be it School of Audio Engineering, TAFE or High School. The Interns build their skills and as they work through the 40 modules and they’re given greater opportunities as they progress. They’re certainly a talented bunch! Beyond their radio work, the bond they’ve formed has enabled them to collaborate musically on their respective projects too. Caleb Roach, Pietro Filippone, Sam Hunt, Jason Walker, Tim Whitt, Adam Bennett & Alex Walendy all have exemplary attitudes, work hard and fit in well with staff and volunteers alike. These guys are on fire, and they’re showed us just how powerful they can be when they pull together as a team.

AUGUST 2017 Owen DeBoer

Owen has long impressed the station community (both staff and volunteers) with his exemplary attitude. Owen has gone above and beyond from the outset, proving himself to be a man of integrity - reliability, trustworthy, hardworking and talented! Owen built his reputation by writing New Music intros and then eventually progressing to voicing them.

Owen is an important volunteer in the Content department with strong focus on the music side of things. In addition to writing promos he took on creating helpful documents to keep our announcers informed about new music, he contributes to music meetings, produced Drive with Ryley on Mondays and has learned how to schedule music too! He even stepped up into a role normally taken on by staff playing the role of Assistant Content Director Zane Dean’s right hand man when he was on leave.

SEPTEMBER 2017 Will Porter

Will was proven to be a committed and dependable Producer. He began producing Drive with Ryley and with his thirst for knowledge and exceptional attitude he immediately added value to the show. During Ryley’s leave period he assisted fill-in Caroline Tucker with tremendous support at a time she was learning the ropes of a new show. Will is continually in pursuit of personal growth while at the same time passionately celebrating the successes of his fellow Freshies.

Since Luke Wilton scored a job at SCA, Will stepped into his shoes to ensure we consistently deliver our specialist programs, and became a vital member of the Content team. C o n t e n t s | 13

OCTOBER 2017 Alex Walendy

Alex joined Fresh 92.7 in April and made an immediate significant impact at the radio station. He showcased his skills in the Production department with Marty, following through the 40-stage program with apparent ease.

His exceptional attitude and attention to detail has seen him not only produce some outstanding work but also go on to voice ads that were being broadcasted for sponsors such as Sammy D Foundation and Preece’s Surf Shop! Alex continued to show leadership, taking time out to guide new interns to not only produce some amazing work but further develop their skills, lifting the capability of the team overall.

NOVEMBER 2017 Josh Day

Josh joined Fresh 92.7 over a year ago and produced immediate results. It’s rare to have someone attend an Information Session and express an interest in Sales, and after passing his Member interview, he was immediately on-site assisting Darren and the Sales Team with market research and taking on any project thrown at him with great enthusiasm. Josh is like a sponge, soaking up everything he can at the station, no matter the task. He helped the Sales team with many leads and allowed Sales Coordinator Bianca Hill to complete her ‘to do’ list, including a major project that provided a very positive outcome. Josh’s is incredibly committed, conscientious, willing to learn, friendly, and fits in with the team as if he’s been with Fresh for years. His hard work, solutions focus and new perspective has provided enormous value to the team. So much so, he’s now taken on contacting clients who previously sponsored Fresh, to re- engage them and provide solutions for their business.

DECEMBER 2017 Blythe Woods

Blythe developed into an outstanding contributor at the station. It’s Blythe’s brilliant attitude that captured the attention of staff and her fellow volunteers. She is keen to learn and willing to take on any task. Not only that but she’s open to feedback and responds immediately to coaching. It’s transformed her performance in 2017. Over the busiest period heading into Christmas Blythe generously gave her time to man the reception desk enabling staff to focus on their responsibilities knowing our customer service over the phone and face to face continued to be delivered to a high standard. In addition to her admin work Blythe was a great member of our Promotions department, helping out with Street Team, activations and she’s was an important member of our 20th Birthday Committee, where she took on a leadership role and spearheaded some of the exciting plans we had for 2018, taking initiative, developing ideas, researching and drawing on her marketing studies. Even better, Blythe spoke to us after our last Member Engagement night to declare her commitment to Fresh 92.7 and discuss how she can get even more involved in the station. This young woman is a powerhouse! C o n t e n t s | 14

JANUARY 2018 Kym Thomas

Kym aka Gunda G, host of the Thursday night bass music workout, The Bassbin has been a member for 7 years. In that time he has embodied the station’s values with an attitude that puts youth first. Kym is exactly what we expect of a senior volunteer, mentoring and sharing his knowledge and experience with emerging volunteers. He has proudly facilitated opportunities for up and coming DJ talent and provided an environment where they’re put front and centre on The Bassbin.

In addition to this Kym has been a regular and reliable Book A DJ contractor assisting with all kinds of bookings including a series of gigs at AIME (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience). Kym has stepped up to assist with panelling Top 92 and generally offering his services, passion and commitment wherever he can.

FEBRUARY 2018 Holly Dundon

Holly threw herself into radio work complimenting her journalism degree, and made a quick impression as someone who is reliable, hardworking, highly capable, and team focused.

When Wavelength was impacted by a team member dropping the ball, Holly stepped in with just 18 hours’ notice to speak to Coriole, Longview and Penny’s Hill back-to-back on a Saturday about young Adelaide’s wine culture. One of the interviewees later contacted us to say Holly was ‘a consummate professional’! She turned the story around within 24 hours and had it in the can ready to broadcast Monday night (normally the Wavelength team work on a story over a fortnight period!). What’s more extraordinary is that she recorded another story in the Garden of Unearthly Delights off her own back for consideration. Now that’s initiative!

Holly didn't stop there either, she’s seen the opportunity to learn new skills helping out in admin and maned the front desk two days a week. Outstanding effort.

MARCH 2018 Ashleigh Bagshaw

Little legend Ashleigh Bagshaw has been with Fresh for over a year now, and in that time shown she is the absolute definition of a team player. On top of ALWAYS putting her hand up for more news shifts in the news department, she’s always jumped in and filled shifts other people are unable to make – she’s quite literally saved the day a few times. And it’s always breakfast shifts, which aren’t easy!

Ashleigh, without fail, always has a positive attitude and infectiously bubbly personality shift after shift, which makes her a brilliant asset to the team and culture here at Fresh.

Ash undertook additional duties with the Wavelength team, further cementing her role as a valued, respected and dedicated volunteer. We got the first glimpse of the serious nature of Ashleigh’s dedication when she crashed her car on the way to her member interview, and still decided to go through with the process!! C o n t e n t s | 15

APRIL 2018 David Charles Eickhoff

David joined Fresh in November of 2017 and made a real impact! Not only was he all hands on deck for the flight centre promo, he also went out of his way to return hire gear afterwards AND on his way back brought us all donuts!!!

He was a great help to Zane over the months in the content department and was more than willing to help out in Admin whenever he isn’t battling a netball injury.

David has a positive vibe and is always putting up his hand to help out the station – he has an exemplary attitude and Fresh 92.7 is proud to have had him as part of the ever growing volunteer team.

MAY 2018 Meagan Kupke

Meagan joined Fresh in 2017 and since then she has shown so much dedication to Fresh! Meagan has made herself available to assist across multiple areas of the station, regardless of whether or not it’s her passion.

She primarily assisted Zane in the digital space but also volunteers for Street Team when needed, volunteered at Reception, put her hand up to write the monthly Fresh Mate newsletter, and will literally tackle any task thrown her way.

She’s dedicated, thorough, hardworking, and talented. She absolutely never complains, and has a super sunny disposition.

JUNE 2018 Arjuna Ganesan

Arj joined us back in October of 2017 and has been involved in a variety of areas at Fresh. In particular, Arj done a lot of work for the news team, but most notably, he has really stepped up in Administration! We’ve had a few gaps in this area since the loss of Tess, but Arj jumped in head first! He went from one half day per week, to almost 4 full days this week alone! In fact, he’ll often finish up a Breakfast News shift and head straight to reception! He’s had to very quickly school himself on policies and procedures and has done so with a smile. Arj has a super positive vibe, amazing attitude and is always eager to learn something new.

C o n t e n t s | 16

JULY 2018 Tayla Mezzino

Tayla joined the Fresh Team in April this year & has been a complete pleasure to be around – here’s just a few of the amazing comments from Staff that cemented her win!!

“Super bubbly and bright and exactly the kind of volunteer we need around Fresh…….works tirelessly at reception & has also begun working within the Street Team.”

“Always putting her hand up to help out in reception and street team as well as helping out Tarlia…….She was thrown in the deep end and has been a massive help to the team.”

“Tayla is always happy to help in anyone in any way – she is such a bright spark to be around – definitely an asset to our Reception & Street Teams!!”

“Obviously with so many changes in staff, having Tayla around ready to help & teach others (including me!!) has been a dream & it was a unanimous vote with everyone agreeing Tayla is amazing & we are proud to name her as our Volunteer of the Month!”

“Very reliable and just great to have in the station!...... She has an exceptional attitude and always goes above and beyond……………..She’s always cheerful……..She has such a great attitude and willing to learn new things. “

Contemporary Music Program

Fresh 92.7 sought funds to continue to run and strengthen the Contemporary Music Development Program. Our program’s intent was to launch careers, which is a complex process requiring a multi-faceted approach. We wanted to create a program with no dead ends, providing a matrix of pathways which artists can move between at every stage of their career to produce, promote and perform their music.

Through a combined series of events including music forums (Open House), electronic music production courses, live performance opportunities for emerging electronic musicians, a mentoring opportunity through the Producer’s Series – song writing edition and three dedicated local music radio shows, the Fresh CMD program provided a professional development pathway for local electronic musicians. The only program of its type offered in South Australia.

Fresh 92.7s CMD program is more than the sum of its combined parts, the ability for musicians to move through our selection of programs creates a strong community and support structure around Fresh allowing emerging electronic musicians to build a fan base, professional experience and provides the opportunity for more established electronic musicians to give back to the community through telling their stories in our forum structure and providing mentorship and inspiration to up-coming talent.

Fresh Air, The Jump and The Come Up continued to provide massive exposure opportunities to local artists. A massive thank you is owed to Caroline Tucker for continuing to spearhead Fresh Air and The Jump, Miki McFayden for her services on The Come Up, and Kym Thomas who has taken over the reins of The Come Up.

In addition to our Fresh Air Open Houses last year with Slumberjack, The Kite String Tangle and Pendulum, we also did an Open House in the heat of Summer with Cosmo’s Midnight. Keep an eye out for a return of the Fresh Air Open House series soon! We once again teamed up with Adelaide City Council for The Jump Start, and our own Caroline Tucker won the vote to perform at Adelaide’s New Year’s Eve!

The EDM Production Course continued throughout 2017, but temporarily ended in December of 2017 due to grant budget restrictions. The engagement we get through the course is strong, however, so we plan to bring it back in the 2019 Calendar year bigger and better than ever.

Brand, Promotions and Events

It was another big year for Fresh 92.7! We threw some major events, signed a deal with Adrien Brian Hyundai for Street Vehicles to get the Street Team back out on the road, partnered with some HUGE brands for some really cool and exciting promotions and competitions, and we sponsored some great causes!

The Top 92 kicked off 2018 with a bang, hosted by Ryley and Caroline Tucker following the departure of Cam & Alex at the end of 2017. Straight off the back, we threw a tropical-inspired OB hosted by Caroline Tucker in Station Lane at the Adelaide Casino and gave one lucky listener the opportunity to head over to to catch Australia’s first ever Ultra Music Festival.

Fast forward to March, and Fresh 92.7 celebrated hitting 20 years old! We delayed the party just a little, and got ShockOne down in June to throw one hell of a party at HQ and raised over $20,000 in the process.

We presented some exclusive movie screenings just for our listeners and members over the 2017/18 year, plus our Street Team hit up Marden Senior College for their Orientation Day, Flinders University for their O’Week and Open Days, and Boost Juice in Rundle Mall for a little dance party! Thanks Ryley! And that’s just to name a few.

In terms of promotions, we made love happen with the Haigh’s Honey, sent one lucky person to Denmark (and the other to Renmark) with Flight Centre, gave away a bunch of South Aussie prizes with Brand SA’s Choosedays, re- visited Credit Union Cash Unlock and gave away up to $2,000 in cash prizes to multiple winners,

And who can forget when Cam & Alex literally swapped jobs with listeners, or when we put Carzi on stage in front of over 50,000 at Adelaide’s NYE?!

For the third year in a row, we jumped on board as the media partner for the Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards and threw Loz & Thomo to the wolves with their first live hosting experience at the awards gala dinner. Sorry guys! We backed the local, live music event, Scouted, and supported the AIR Awards for the second year in a row.

If that’s enough, I don’t know what it is!

Initiatives

BOOK A DJ

This revenue stream continues to be in high demand, particularly once the warmer weather hits. The 2017-18 saw Book A DJ coast along very comfortable, but come 2019 the initiative will have an even stronger focus. Brand & Promotions Manager, Tarlia Hill, is currently interviewing new DJs to add to the roster, is in the process of getting a new logo designed, and revamping the webpage. Plus new promos are set to hit the airwaves shortly. This will open up some volunteer opportunities for those with a high level of organisation and attention to detail to assist with the booking of DJs.

In a nutshell, Fresh 92.7 are providing DJs for Weddings, School Formals, Engagement Parties, Birthday Parties Corporate Events, Charitable Events, and public events like the Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards. A huge thank you goes out to Kym Thomas (Gunda G) for his continued support of the AIME Mentoring program and working almost every week for virtually nothing. AIME is an educational program that supports and educates indigenous students.

We can’t wait to see what this next year has in store!

NEWS & WAVELENGTH

This year has seen News and Wavelength at Fresh 92.7 lift its game massively!

Our news team has had a bit of an overhaul – we rewrote our style guide from the ground up for the first time in nearly four years, resulting in us delivering tighter bulletins with a broader range of topics, and a sharper focus on what our community of interest wants and needs to hear about. We also ran our first News workshop with a beloved member of Fresh, Dorian Tisato, who imparted his commercial experience at Mix 102.3 onto our news team.

Wavelength has continued to kick goals, covering topics like marijuana legalisation, consent and sexual assault, and the Hutt St Centre controversy. We interviewed Jay Weatherill and Steven Marshall, providing election coverage that matters to our listeners. We also said goodbye to our first proper co-host, Laura O’Callaghan, who joined our Breakfast team – but thanks to volunteers like David Simmons and Madeline Coats we weren’t lacking for co-hosts on the show this year.

Wavelength has been put on hiatus over Winter but will return in October with renewed focus and a bevy of new team members – keep an eye out for the official return date soon! C o n t e n t s | 24

FRESH 92.7 RADIO PRODUCTION COURSE

This year, our legendary Production Engineer, Marty Haros, developed a comprehensive program for her Production volunteers to ensure they were getting the most out of their experience with us. Even when she can’t be with them because she’s literally responsible for all the pre-recorded audio you hear coming out of the speakers, her volunteers can continue to learn.

The course is reserved for Fresh Members only and is a forty- stage program that guides volunteers through the basic steps of audio editing, voicing and other key elements of the production department. Students begin with the fundamental basics including importing audio files, creating editing sessions and learning the basic terminology used daily. Throughout the course they move onto stages such as vocal coaching, which puts them in the engineer role and teaches them techniques to run a voicing session from start to finish.

Not only do students walk away from the program with skills they can apply to any commercial radio job but they also can keep their work as an audio resume. This includes a voice demo, sales ad examples and a content imaging library. Over fifteen volunteers have taken part in the program since it began in 2017. Two have completed all forty stages and approximately ten students are nearing the end. There have also been three placement students from SAE take part in the program in the hopes of having them join the station as a member. The Fresh Radio Production Course provides invaluable hands on skills and experiences that will benefit volunteers who want to pursue a career in audio production.

Many of her volunteers are already contributing the some of the imaging on Fresh!

Awards

Last year Fresh 92.7 won SACBA Awards. We won Best Station ID, Station Promo or Program Promo for our Production Course Promo, Best Sponsorship Message for an advertisement we produced for Nano, and our Board Member Dorian Tisato was bestowed with the honour of Volunteer of the Year.

Fresh was also nominated for four CBAA Awards, competing at a national level. We were nominated for Best Station Production for our Production Course Promo, Best Station Promotion or Fundraising Campaign for Trapped, Excellence in Music Programming for Fresh Air, and Outstanding Youth Contribution for our Assistant Content Director, Zane Dean. Unfortunately we did not win anything this year.

This year, Fresh 92.7 received two nominations for CBAA Awards – Excellence in Digital Media for our brand new App, and Best Station Production for our promo for the brand new App! We’ll find out if we’ve won anything in November.
