ANGIE MCMAHON - STORY - 500 WORDS - LONG FORM

Angie McMahon is experiencing a rapid rise to success. Her intimate and powerful songwriting puts melancholy and solitude hand in hand with anthemic guts, this truth in her music and her story connecting audiences far and wide. Angie’s music has the ability to bring you tears and slowly help you piece things back together.

Describing herself as someone who loves honest and romantic songwriting about life, love and takeaway food, it is Angie’s humanness and authenticity that draws an audience in and has helped her fill some of Australia’s most revered venues off the back of three singles.

Drawing inspiration from Bruce Springsteen, Lianne La Havas, Big Thief and Tom Waits, Angie’s music shifts between gravelly intimacy and pounding rock, covering the full dynamic spectrum. There is strength in Angie’s fragility, as her powerful performances swell with vulnerability and a self-deprecating sense of humour.

In her upcoming ‘A Couple Of Songs’ EP Angie aptly titles her single Pasta where she likens eating too much gluten to feelings of loss and hope. Angie describes the song as being “about feeling really tired, trying anyway, and wanting to rock out like Springsteen.” On the EP’s other single, Keeping Time, Angie says “This song is me yelling at myself to get off my ass and do some work… but in a loving way. You can either back yourself or keep bad habits, so take note of where you’re at and use it as fuel. It’s like a love song to self-discipline.”

Angie's relatable familiarity and openness help audiences access their emotions, as she sings about being embarrassed by heartache, unsure of how to conquer exhaustion, and unwilling to be fake. Off the stage, Angie is DIY - she remains candid by drawing her dogs onto tour posters and clothing, and openly sharing her feelings. Angie McMahon is breaking down walls and letting you into her world; she encourages connectedness and truth, offering up normality while making remarkable music.

Armed with a selection of bedroom demos built up over several years, Angie and her friend Alex O’Gorman (co-producer, bass player) retreated to a scout hall about an hour outside of Angie’s hometown of . They rented the country property for a week and finished recording Angie’s debut record, a unique collection of songs that range from whispering ballads to punchy rock.

The album dips in and out of crunchy guitar sounds, propelling drums, and moments of delicacy and isolation, all lead by Angie's storytelling as she inspects the sometimes quiet and sometimes brutal lessons that have come with growing into a young woman. Throughout the songs on the record there is a musical fluidity and freedom as Angie showcases different influences, while it is her soaring vocal and intimate lyrics that remain the focal point, closing with the album's final song which bears a resemblance to a lullaby.

Up until recently Angie was booking the bands at a local Melbourne venue while simultaneously her music started connecting around the world. Remaining an active part of the Melbourne music community, a scene which Angie often gives credit to, Angie chooses to work with like minded musicians and collaborators who share similar inspirations and morals.

As an artist in the spotlight, with audiences singing her songs back to her at festivals and venues, Angie remains humble. She confesses a constant willingness to improve and continue to connect to audiences with her art.

Angie McMahon’s upcoming ‘A Couple Of Songs’ EP is out in March 2019, followed by her debut album ‘Salt’ in 2019, followed by a world tour. Angie is set to make her US debut with her band in March 2019.
