Social Media and the Unyielding Flow of Cable News in the Age of Trump
Social Media and the Unyielding Flow of Cable News in the Age of Trump Deborah L. Jaramillo, Boston University An early observation about television’s daily architecture warrants a reevaluation as new technologies and shifting viewing patterns call into question its relevance. For all the justified criticism, adaptation, and elaboration of Williams’ earliest description of flow, a return to the general concept helps us decode what is happening on cable news in the Trump era. The new routine on cable news generally revels in the sort of disruption instigated by political turmoil, scandal, a renewed investment in investigative reporting, and the decision of cable news producers to include and fixate on Trump’s Twitter feed. Information flow, Twitter flow, and programming flow live together now, sometimes uncomfortably. The key to flow on MSNBC, in particular, is the way that this new living arrangement moves not toward denouement and relaxation at the end of the programming day as broadcast flow does. The blow of each revelation snowballs so that flow is not just a sequence of possibly connected stories from dawn through midnight. I argue that the crux of flow on MSNBC is actually about memory and magnitude—not the resolution of but the accumulation of politically charged information, crises, and catastrophes across the day and, as we are seeing, across all days. Cable news has created a space where continuity, repetition, anticipation, and disruption commingle; the resulting atmosphere is ripe for continuous, live political catastrophe. Cable news relies on the relentless flow of time to frame its usefulness for viewers. -

Submission on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Commitment to Reflecting and Representing Regional Diversity
Submission on The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's commitment to reflecting and representing regional diversity Dear Sir/ Madam, I welcome this opportunity to comment on The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's commitment to reflecting and representing regional diversity within the terms of reference as set out by the Environment and Communications References Committee. Regional diversity and national identity will be diminished with the loss of the ABC Tasmanian Production Unit. Programs of high quality reflecting and representing regional diversity have been produced in Tasmania and include Auction Room, the extremely popular “Collectors” and “Gardening Australia” when it was hosted by Peter Cundall. These Tasmanian programs enabled national viewers to enjoy and appreciate the state’s distinctive heritage and culture. The Tasmanian bushfires were best reported by local journalists who have a personal understanding of the state; its people and conditions. The decision to cut ABC production in Hobart has met with opposition from 12 Federal Senators and the Premier, Lara Giddings who is unable to match funding from the State budget for Screen Tasmania to offset ABC cuts as requested by the ABC’s Managing Director (ABC, 2012)1. Similarly, Western Australia also has limited ABC production with the cessation of “Can We Help?” enjoyed by viewers over six years. The decline, according to Cassellas (2012), has been evident since 1985 when WA had a low but reasonable 7.8 per cent of ABC’s staff compared with just 5.4 per cent in 20122. Now the WA studio is mainly unused or hired out to companies like Screen West. By comparison, NSW had 49.2 per cent of the ABC’s staff last year. -
Stephen Harrington Thesis
PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE BEYOND JOURNALISM: INFOTAINMENT, SATIRE AND AUSTRALIAN TELEVISION STEPHEN HARRINGTON BCI(Media&Comm), BCI(Hons)(MediaSt) Submitted April, 2009 For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology, Australia 1 2 STATEMENT OF ORIGINAL AUTHORSHIP The work contained in this thesis has not been previously submitted to meet requirements for an award at this or any other higher education institution. To the best of my knowledge and belief, the thesis contains no material previously published or written by another person, except where due reference is made. _____________________________________________ Stephen Matthew Harrington Date: 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the changing relationships between television, politics, audiences and the public sphere. Premised on the notion that mediated politics is now understood “in new ways by new voices” (Jones, 2005: 4), and appropriating what McNair (2003) calls a “chaos theory” of journalism sociology, this thesis explores how two different contemporary Australian political television programs (Sunrise and The Chaser’s War on Everything) are viewed, understood, and used by audiences. In analysing these programs from textual, industry and audience perspectives, this thesis argues that journalism has been largely thought about in overly simplistic binary terms which have failed to reflect the reality of audiences’ news consumption patterns. The findings of this thesis suggest that both ‘soft’ infotainment (Sunrise) and ‘frivolous’ satire (The Chaser’s War on Everything) are used by audiences in intricate ways as sources of political information, and thus these TV programs (and those like them) should be seen as legitimate and valuable forms of public knowledge production. -

SPORTS WITHOUT BORDERS Sports Participation Conference & Sports Technology Expo 2014
SPORTS WITHOUT BORDERS Sports Participation Conference & Sports Technology Expo 2014 Friday, 2 May 2014 - Moonee Ponds, Melbourne Win or Lose: Is it really how you play the game? The essential event for every grassroots sporting group, administrator and community leader in local communities and local government ourcommunity.com.au 1 Sports Without Borders! Drugs, betting scandals, misbehaving heroes, controversial trade deals – professional sport is often in the news for all the wrong reasons. Happily, amateur sports usually fare better. At the grassroots, it's all about fun, health and social inclusion. (At least, it should be.) Competition is still important but in the final analysis, it's how you played the game that truly matters. In Australia, our sports values are intricately entwined with our community values – for Australians to affiliate themselves with a game, a team, a club, they want to be sure that everyone's getting a fair go and enjoying joining in. This conference will provide the inspiration and the practical support to ensure sports participants, administrators, volunteers and supporters get it right and get everyone involved. Key takeaways: • How to foster an ethical framework without compromising a winning spirit • Meet people who care about what you care about • Get inspiration for the year ahead • How to get more people involved in your club • How to raise money without burning out your members • How to use technology to recruit and retain players and supporters Why should I attend? The 2014 Sports Without Borders Conference brings together the complete picture – sportspeople, club officials, volunteers, policymakers, government funders, government and local government workers, peak bodies, and sports administrators.
