It will discuss a range of views, from those who perceive Zionism to be a secular movement that defied tradition and religion, to those who perceive Zionism in religious and Messianic terms. During the first half of the course, we will discuss the evolution of the subject from the origins of the Zionist movement to the establishment of the state of Israel and the Six Days War. In the second half of the course, we will discuss current views about the subject and its implications for contemporary Israeli society and the Israeli-Arab conflict. Course requirements: 1. One short paper, in which you will be asked to analyze a primary source, should be submitted online by February 28, 2011 (maximum 1250 words, 20% of the final mark). 2. One research paper, due on March 21, 2011 (maximum 3000 words, 40% of the final mark). A list of suggested topics together with detailed instructions will be posted. You are welcome to write your research paper about a topic that is not on the list, with the Instructor’s advance approval. 3. A final exam, at a date to be determined by the Faculty of Arts and Science (40% of the final mark). -

Kathryn Lee Leader A thesis submitted to the University of Sydney in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Performance Studies July 2008 Abstract In this thesis, I examine the role performance plays in the adversarial criminal jury trial. The initial motivation behind this inquiry was the pervasiveness of a metaphor: why is the courtroom so frequently compared to a theatre? Most writings on this topic see the courtroom as bearing what might be termed a cosmetic resemblance to a theatre, making comparisons, for instance, between elements of costume and staging. I pursue a different line of argument. I argue that performance is not simply an embellishment of the trial process but rather a constitutive feature of the criminal jury trial. It is by means of what I call the performance of tradition that the trial acquires its social significance as a (supposedly) timeless bulwark of authority and impartiality. In the first three chapters I show that popular usage of the term ‗theatrical‘ (whether it be to describe the practice of a flamboyant lawyer, or a misbehaving defendant) is frequently laden with pejorative connotations and invariably (though usually only implicitly) invokes comparison to a presupposed authentic or natural way of behaviour (‗not-performing‘). Drawing on the work of Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu I argue that, whatever legal agents see as appropriate trial conduct (behaviour that is ‗not-performing‘), they are misrecognising the performative accomplishments and demands required of both legal agents and laypersons in the trial. -

CORE UA 537 Spring 2014 CULTURES AND CONTEXTS: MODERN ISRAEL Prof. David Engel This course will explore the cultural values and expressions through which residents of the modern State of Israel, established in 1948, have tried to come to grips with the manifold challenges their country has faced since its inception. The term “culture” in the course is taken to designate the set of ideas, practices, and objects through which human beings adapt to their physical and social environment. The founders of the State of Israel envisioned that the country would initiate extensive changes in the way its citizens interacted with their environment: they anticipated major modifications in their economic and political behavior, their family life, their attitudes toward their bodies, their relations with their neighbors, their religious outlook, and their view of their place in the world. They expected further that these changes would find concrete expression in literature, art, music, architecture, and intellectual life, all of which would promote their vision of how the State's population should behave. However, for all that they looked forward to cultural change, Israel's founders did not imagine that the environment to which the new culture was supposed to help Israel's citizens adapt would itself change profoundly. In the sixty-five years of its existence Israel has had to confront many challenges, brought about, among other things, by rapid mass immigration, periodic wars, shifting geopolitical alignments, transformation of the global economy, and sweeping technological innovations. The course will analyze these farreaching changes in the context in which the new Israeli culture has functioned and investigate how that culture has responded to them. -

This article examines the relationship between genre-mixing and cultural commentary in four documentary series produced for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that centre on established comedians. These series are Lawrence Leung’s Choose Your Own Adventure (2009), Judith Lucy’s Spiritual Journey (2011), Judith Lucy is All Woman (2015) and Luke Warm Sex (2016). Each series combines the documentary and comedy genres by centring on a comedian’s investigation of a theme such as spirituality, gender or sex. While appearing alongside news satire, these docucomedies depart from the latter by eschewing politics in favour of existential themes. Embracing conventions of personalized documentaries, these series use performance reflexively to draw attention to therapeutic discourses and awkward situations. Giving expression to uncertain and questioning views of contemporary spirituality, gender and mediated intimacies, the docucomedies of Lawrence Leung, Judith Lucy and Luke McGregor stage interventions in contemporary debates that constitute forms of public pedagogy. Documentary comedy These series can be identified as documentary comedies, or docucomedies, which combine humour and non-fiction representation without adhering primarily to either genre. Although the relationship between comedy and factual screen works has received little sustained attention, notes Paul Ward, a program can combine both genres (2005, 67, 78–9). -
