In 1676, London’s St. Mary of Bethlehem Hospital for the Insane, also known as Bethlem or Bedlam, moved to a new building in Moorfields which was three times its former size. This event was the first sign of a new tendency nationwide: in the following decades, Britain witnessed the opening of many new mental care institutions and the expansion of existing ones. The first attempt to regulate the burgeoning of these institutions was the Madhouses Act of 1774, which provided for licensing and inspection of private madhouses. By focusing on the years 1676-1774, my work considers roughly the pe- riod that Michel Foucault defines as the Classical Age in his influential Folie et déraison. Histoire de la folie à l’age classique, 1961 (History of Mad- ness, 1972 [1965]). Although I do not endorse Foucault’s much contested idea of a European «Great Confinement», I explore its possibilities as a means to point out a change in the feeling towards mental trouble in sev- enteenth- and eighteenth-century Britain. This book proposes an interdisciplinary approach, with literature as the main field of inquiry. The following chapters examine how various seventeenth- and eighteenth-century poets represent their experience of the changing definitions and treatments of mental disease. Specifically, I analyse the texts of five authors, James Carkesse (ca. 1636-1711), Anne Finch (1661-1720), William Collins (1721-1759), Christopher Smart (1722-1771) and William Cowper (1731-1800),

Salman Mazaya University College, Dhi Qar, Iraq *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: The present review discussed the species diversity of herpetofauna in southern Iraq due to their scientific and national interests. The review includes a historical record for the herpetofaunal studies in Iraq since the earlier investigations of the 1920s and 1950s along with the more recent taxonomic trials in the following years. It appeared that, little is known about Iraqi herpetofauna, and no comprehensive checklist has been done for these species. So far, 96 species of reptiles and amphibians have been recorded from Iraq, but only a relatively small proportion of them occur in the southern marshes. The marshes act as key habitat for globally endangered species and as a potential for as yet unexplored amphibian and reptile diversity. Despite the lack of precise localities, the tree frog Hyla savignyi, the marsh frog Pelophylax ridibunda and the green toad Bufo viridis are found in the marshes. Common reptiles in the marshes include the Caspian terrapin (Clemmys caspia), the soft-shell turtle (Trionyx euphraticus), the Euphrates softshell turtle (Rafetus euphraticus), geckos of the genus Hemidactylus, two species of skinks (Trachylepis aurata and Mabuya vittata) and a variety of snakes of the genus Coluber, the spotted sand boa (Eryx jaculus), tessellated water snake (Natrix tessellata) and Gray's desert racer (Coluber ventromaculatus). More recently, a new record for the keeled gecko, Cyrtopodion scabrum and the saw-scaled viper (Echis carinatus sochureki) was reported. The IUCN Red List includes six terrestrial and six aquatic amphibian species.

Here we take the opportunity to provide a new and updated checklist of freshwater fishes of Iran based on literature and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history and new fish collections. This article lists 288 species in 107 genera, 28 families, 22 orders and 3 classes reported from different Iranian basins. However, presence of 23 reported species in Iranian waters needs confirmation by specimens.

The morphological aspects of the territory; the colors; the human trace on the physical territory; the history, culture and traditions are but some of the elements of a landscape fascination. The Veneto region, where Padua always played and still plays a lively cultural role, is particularly rich of suggestions and throughout the centuries inspired artists, musicians, writers. Johann W. Goethe, Lord Byron or Henry James wrote beautiful memories of their Italian journey and left us extraordinary depictions of cities like Padua, Venice and Verona surrounded by hills, mountains, lagoon, but also rural landscapes. Following the path of these famous travelers, the course aims to offer students the opportunity to discover the Veneto region through literary and cultural experiences. By means of on-site lessons, readings and field trips, students are able to recognize the local identity that deepens its roots into the landscape (natural and anthropic), culture (progress and tradition), language (Italian and dialect), history and society. During the course, students will read and discuss extracts from works by Luigi Meneghello, Mario Rigoni Stern, Dino Buzzati or Giovanni Comisso to only mention some, and visit places such as the Dolomites, the Veneto countryside, or cities like Padova, Treviso, Vicenza or Venezia.

Dopo la laurea in lettere a Nizza, si dedica all’insegnamento nelle scuole medie e poi nei licei, conciliando questa attività con quella di scrittore. Nel 1973, dopo il servizio militare, scrive un pamphlet contro i falsi miti della vita militare. Nel 1979 soggiorna per due anni in Brasile, fonte d’ispirazione del romanzo Ecco la storia (Le Dictateur et le hamac 2003). Nel 1985 scrive, per la Série Noire (Gallimard), Il paradiso degli orchi e così Benjamin Malaussène ed i suoi amici di Belleville fanno il loro ingresso nella letteratura. Il ciclo Malaussène prosegue con La fata carabina (1987), La prosivendola (1989), Il Signor Malaussène (1995), Ultime notizie dalla famiglia (1995/96) La passione secondo Thérèse (1999). Parallelamente scrive una tetralogia per bambini, con eroi vicini all’universo infantile, che abbraccia i temi della scuola e dell’amicizia, il cui protagonista è Kamo. A questi romanzi si aggiungono altri tipi di opere fra cui: Come un romanzo (1992), saggio di pedagogia e Gli esuberati (2000), fumetto ironico e impegnato in collaborazione con Jacques Tardi.

    MEDICINA NEI SECOLI ARTE E SCIENZA, 30/2 (2018) 505-530 Journal of History of Medicine Articoli/Articles THE LOST LANGUAGE OF ANCIENT BABYLONIAN PLANTS: FROM MYTH TO MEDICINE BARBARA BÖCK Instituto de Lenguas y Culturas del Mediterráneo y Oriente Próximo Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Madrid, ES SUMMARY The Sumerian myth of Enki and Ninḫursaga, which conveys Enki’s metaphorical nature as power behind the irrigation of the Mesopotamian marshlands, contains a passage that brings together plants, pains and deities. The raison d’être for the choice of these eight plants has so far escaped scholars. In analysing the evidence for the plants according to cuneiform literary and medical sources the present contribution offers a discussion of their nature and possible connection with the god Enki providing thus an explanation for their choice and shedding light on the storyteller’s motivation for including the episode on plants in the myth. Although Ancient Babylonians did not produce mythological nar- rations or other literary traditions about plants comparable to the Classical world, references to the plant kingdom indeed entered the cuneiform belles-lettres. A rather bizarre passage that brings togeth- er plants, pains and deities and which will be discussed in the present contribution is included in the Sumerian myth about the god of wis- dom and sweet waters, Enki, and Ninhursag, a mother goddess. The narration is also known as “Sumerian Epic of Paradise” as coined by its first editor Stephen Langdon in 19151. The Sumerologist S.N.     1 Translator’s Introduction: Luigi Meneghello, Dispatriate There is no good way to reproduce the sparkling sense/nonsense of Libera nos a malo, the title of Luigi Meneghello’s first1 and best-loved book. “Deliver us from evil”: the well-known phrase, in Latin, comes from the Paternoster, of course, but it also evokes pure childish fun, for Malo is the name of the country town near Vicenza in northeast Italy where Meneghello was born and raised. That malo pronounced during the mass set off a chain of associations for a native, not only because it bizarrely summoned up a real place on the local map, but because the vernacular (male) means not just evil but also pain, suffering, illness, and harm, practically the sum total of everything terrible. “Deliver us from luàme,” the children prayed: from the dung heap, “the dark splatter of death, the lion’s jaws, the bottomless pit.” And yet the little town of Malo—the name is a lopped off version of its medieval place name Maladum—was not, we quickly learn, a place synonymous with misery, suffering, or sorrow. There certainly was all that, yes, but also much to laugh about. It seemed that even a place on a map could be impertinent, irreverent. By turns sharp, amused, ironic, light-handed, and sometimes vigorously rude, Meneghello’s first book is a recollection of childhood in a time and place—rural Italy of the 1920s and 1930s—that was already disappearing when it was published in 1963. Although the events in his story take place less than a century ago, Meneghello describes a world in some ways closer to the peasant Italy of the Middle Ages than to the twentyfirst-century urban sprawl that characterizes the region today.

This research obtained values of serum electrolytes and hematological pa- rameters in crucian carp ( n = 15) and common carp ( n = 13). Significantly different values of K +, Cl – and Ca 2+ con- centration were detected. In serum of common carp there were significantly higher concentration of K + and Cl – and lower concentration of Ca 2+ , compared to the crucian carp. Hematological parameters differ in these two species. In blood of common carp significantly lower PCV, hemoglobin concentration, RBC and MCV and notably higher MCHC and WBC were obtained, compared to crucian carp. This preliminary research is important in establishing referential range of biochemical and hematological parameters in cyprinid fishes.
