Vegetation of Trampled Habitats in the Prekmurje Region (Ne Slovenia) HACQUETIA 4/2 • 2005, 151–159 VEGETATION OF TRAMPLED HABITATS IN THE PREKMURJE REGION (NE SLOVENIA) Andraž ČARNI* Abstract The work deals with the vegetation growing along and on roads, footpaths and wheel tracks in the Prek- murje region. The author concludes that the communities appearing in these habitats can be classified into several syntaxa. The most characteristic associations are classified into the class Polygono-Poëtea annuae. On less trampled sites one can find also the communities that are otherwise partly adapted to trampling, how- ever, they are classified into other syntaxonomic units, for example into the alliance Sisymbrion or Malvion (both from the class Stellarietea mediae) or into the alliance Plantagini-Prunellion from the class Molinio-Ar- rhentheretea. The following plant communities were established Matricarietum discoideae-recutitae Jarolímek et al. 1997 (Malvion neglectae), Polygono arenastri-Lepidietum ruderalis Mucina 1993 (Sisymbrion) and Poëtum annuae Felföldy 1942 (Polygono-Poëtea annuae) and Prunello vulgaris-Ranunculetum repentis Winterhoff 1963 (Molinio- Arrhenatheretea). Izvleček Delo obravnava vegetacijo na cestah in ob njih, ob poteh in kolovozih v Prekmurju. Avtor ugotavlja, da lahko združbe, ki se pojavljajo na teh habitatih, uvrstimo v več sintaksonov. Najbolj značilne asociacije uvrščamo v razred Polygono-Poëtea annuae. Na manj pohojenih rastiščih pa najdemo tudi združbe, ki so sicer delno pri- lagojene na teptanje, vendar pa jih uvrščamo v druge sintaksonomske enote, na primer zvezi Sisymbrion ali Malvion (obe iz razreda Stellarietea mediae) ali v zvezo Plantagini-Prunellion iz razreda Molinio-Arrhenatheretea. Ugotovljene so bile naslednje rastlinske združbe Matricarietum discoideae-recutitae Jarolímek et al. 1997 (Mal- vion neglectae), Polygono arenastri-Lepidietum ruderalis Mucina 1993 (Sisymbrion), Poëtum annuae Felföldy 1942 (Polygono-Poëtea annuae) in Prunello vulgaris-Ranunculetum repentis Winterhoff 1963 (Molinio-Arrhenatheretea). W. Gatehouse The naturalisation and subsequent spread of non-indigenous plant species (NIPS) is a major problem for most regions of the world. Managing plant invasions requires greater understanding of factors that determine initial naturalisation and distribution of wild NIPS. By the year 2000, 2252 NIPS were recorded as wild (1773 fully naturalised and 479 casual) in New Zealand. From published literature and electronic herbaria records, I recorded year of discovery of wild populations, and regional distribution of these wild NIPS. I also recorded species related attributes hypothesised to affect naturalisation and/or distribution, including global trade, human activities, native range and biological data; and regional attributes hypothesised to affect distribution, including human population densities, land use/cover, and environmental data. I used interval-censored time-to-event analyses to estimate year of naturalisation from discovery records, then analysed the importance of historical, human activity, biogeographical and biological attributes in determining patterns of naturalisation. Typically, NIPS that naturalised earlier were herbaceous, utilitarian species that were also accidentally introduced and/or distributed, with a wide native range that included Eurasia, naturalised elsewhere, with a native congener in New Zealand.

Large-scale (national) 21 distribution seemed related to the availability, but not dominance, of forest; abundance was 22 generally higher in woodland than on farmland. However, abundance in woodland 23 increased with additional structural diversity and proximity to farmland, and abundance on 24 farmland increased with greater availability of non-farmland features. Nesting occurred 25 most frequently on trees (secondarily on bushes) but we found geographical differences in 26 the type of nesting substrate, with thorny bushes being used more frequently in the north, 27 and open canopy trees in the south. Turtle doves fed on a wide spectrum of seeds with a 28 predominance of wild, particularly early-flowering, plants; but we could not identify a single 29 plant species whose abundance determined turtle dove numbers.

The alien species are in two categories ● neophytes ○ archaeophytes Neophytes are aliens that were introduced by people in recent times (post-1500 by convention) and for which we typically have precise dates for their first British and first Berkshire records. Neophytes may be naturalized (forming self-replacing populations) or casual (relying on repeated introduction). Archaeophytes are naturalized aliens that were carried about by people in pre-historic times, either intentionally for their utility, or unintentionally as contaminants of crop seeds. Archaeophytes were typically classified as natives in older floras.

    Plant Crib STELLARIA 1. Stellaria nemorum / Myosoton aquaticum Southern botanists have been known to record Stellaria nemorum L. in error as Myosoton aquaticum L. Moench in northern England and Scotland. They are easily distinguished as Stellaria nemorum has 3 styles and Myosoton aquaticum 5 styles. Both species differ from the Stellaria media agg. in having the stem hairy all the way round, especially below the nodes (usually in two lines in S. media). 2. Stellaria nemorum subsp. montana S. nemorum L. subsp. montana (Pierrat) Berher (subsp. glochidisperma Murb.) is a Welsh taxon recorded for V.c. 35, 42, 44-48. It is distinguished from the widespread subsp. nemorum by bract, seed and petiole characters, the former two being the most reliable (Green 1954). The inflorescence proper has a flower arising between the two dichotomous branches; ignore the small flowering branches which occur occasionally in the axils of the upper leaves. Immature seeds may have marginal tubercles which seem longer in proportion to breadth than when mature. The petiole character is not diagnostic in itself and is unreliable where the specimen is either a very lush subsp. nemorum or a diminutive subsp. montana, whilst young growth, vegetative shoots and the lower flowering stems of both subspecies have stalked leaves. Rarely, intermediate populations (e.g. with, prominent tubercles without a barbate cap) have been recorded from V.c. 34 and one or two Welsh vice-counties. Subsp. montana and an intermediate plant are clearly illustrated in Holland et al. (1986) page 18. Subsp. nemorum: Inflorescence bracts decreasing gradually in size at each dichotomy of the cyme, the second pair 30-85% the length of the first; edge of the ripe seed with ± hemispherical tubercles; uppermost leaves of flowering stems usually sessile or with petiole 5 mm or less.

  • An Ecological Database of the British Flora
    An Ecological Database of the British Flora submitted by Helen Jacqueline Peat for examination for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Department of Biology University of York October 1992 Abstract The design and compilation of a database containing ecological information on the British Flora is described. All native and naturalised species of the Gymnospermae and Angiospermae are included. Data on c.130 characteristics concerning habitat, distribution, morphology, physiology, life history and associated organisms, were collected by both literature searching and correspondence with plant ecologists. The evolutionary history of 25 of the characteristics was investigated by looking at the amount of variance at each taxonomic level. The variation in pollination mechanisms was found at high taxonomic levels suggesting these evolved, and became fixed, early on in the evolution of flowering plants. Chromosome number, annualness, dichogamy and self-fertilization showed most variance at low taxonomic levels, suggesting these characteristics have evolved more recently and may still be subject to change. Most of the characteristics, however, eg. presence of compound leaves, height and propagule length showed variance spread over several taxonomic levels suggesting evolution has occurred at different times in different lineages. The necessity of accounting for phylogeny when conducting comparative analyses is discussed, and two methods allowing this are outlined. Using these, the questions: 'Why does stomatal distribution differ between species?' and 'Why do different species have different degrees of mycorrhizal infection?' were investigated. Amphistomaty was found to be associated with species of unshaded habitats, those with small leaves and those with hairy leaves, and hypostomaty with woody species, larger leaves and glabrous leaves.
