Five College Center for East Asian Studies National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) 2012 Japan Study Tour The Human and Physical Geography of Japan Reports from the Field United States Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad with additional funding from the Freeman Foundation Five College Center for East Asian Studies 69 Paradise Road, Florence Gilman Pavilion Northampton, MA 01063 The Human and Physical Geography of Japan Reports from the Field In the summer of 2012, twelve educators from across the United States embarked on a four-week journey to Japan with the goal of enriching their classroom curriculum content by learning first-hand about the country. Prior to applying for the study tour, each participant completed a 30-hour National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) seminar. Once selected, they all completed an additional 20 hours of pre-departure orientation, including FCCEAS webinars (funded by the US-Japan Foundation; archived webinars are available at www.smith.edu/fcceas), readings, and language podcasts. Under the overarching theme of “Human and Physical Geography of Japan,” the participants’ experience began in Tokyo, then continued in Sapporo, Yokohama, Kamakura, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, Miyajima, and finally ended in Naha. Along the way they heard from experts on Ainu culture and burakumin, visited the Tokyo National Museum of History, heard the moving testimony of an A-bomb survivor, toured the restored seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and dined on regional delicacies. Each study tour participant was asked to prepare a report on an assigned geography-related topic to be delivered to the group in country and then revised upon their return to the U.S.

  • The Literature of Shibata Renzaburō and a New Perspective on Nihilism in Postwar Japan, 1945 – 1978
The Literature of Shibata Renzaburō and a New Perspective on Nihilism in Postwar Japan, 1945 – 1978 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Artem Vorobiev, M. A. Graduate Program in East Asian Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Richard Edgar Torrance, Ph.D., Advisor Etsuyo Yuasa, Ph.D. Naomi Fukumori, Ph.D. Copyrighted by Artem Vorobiev 2017 Abstract This dissertation intends to delineate and explore the work of Shibata Renzaburō (柴田錬三郎, 1917-1978), author of kengō shōsetsu novels, the genre of historical and adventure novels, which occupies a large and important niche in popular Japanese literature of the twentieth century. Shibata Renzaburō is widely known in Japan; his works have seen numerous editions and reprints, and a number of his most popular works have been adapted for film and television. Shibata Renzaburō is an iconic writer in that he was instrumental in establishing and solidifying the kengō shōsetsu genre, a genre in which stories were usually set in the Edo period (1603-1868) and which involved elaborate plots and revolved around fictional master swordsmen, featuring intrigue, adventure, masterful swordplay, and fast-paced narratives. While the notion of a master swordsman protagonist was not new and came about during the prewar period, Shibata’s writing differed from prewar works in several important aspects. One of the points of difference is the role and influence of French literature in Shibata’s work, in particular, in the character of Nemuri Kyōshirō, the protagonist of the eponymous Nemuri Kyōshirō series.

'Animatrix' producer Michael Arias becomes the first foreign director to enter Japan's cult domain | The Japan Times Online 6/21/12 5:43 PM HOME The Japan Times Printer Friendly Articles 'Animatrix' producer Michael Arias becomes the first foreign director to enter Japan's cult domain By PATRICK MACIAS Special to The Japan Times Much has been written about how Japanese anime has stomped across the globe like an out-of-control juggernaut, scooping up legions of fans along the way. Such unbridled success usually results in cross-pollination; new talent floods in from far-flung shores, as was the case with the hordes of Europeans who swarmed to Hollywood in its golden age and still go there today. But Japan's anime industry has remained largely closeted, and certainly no foreigner has ever made the logical move of stepping behind the camera to seize the controls. Until now, that is. Southern California native Michael Arias is the first foreigner ever to helm a feature-length anime film in Japan. "No one was ever stupid enough to try before," he says of the distinction that defines "Tekkonkinkreet," his animated adaptation of Taiyo Matsumoto's cult-classic manga (published abroad as "Black and White"). Although "Tekkon" is Arias's directorial debut, the Japan resident of 15 years has long been active behind the scenes on a number of high-profile movie projects, including stints as a special-effects technician on James Cameron's "The Abyss" (1989) and "Total Recall" (1990). Arias, who admits that he's "not much of a draftsman," went into developing software, a career move that eventually led to work on animated films in the United States and elsewhere.

  • Australian Participation in the Occupation of Japan, 1945-1952
AUSTRALIAN PARTICIPATION IN THE OCCUPATION OF JAPAN, 1945-1952 By Iwane Shibuya, BA (Hons) This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Murdoch University 2015 Declaration I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. .................................... Iwane Shibuya ii Abstract This thesis examines the Australian experience of the Allied occupation of Japan that followed World War II. Its primary focus is on what the occupation brought to Australia, rather than what Australia brought to the occupation. I analyse Australian participation in the occupation both at the level of government policy and the experience of the troops who went to Japan as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force. I argue that participation in the occupation was a key experience for the Australian government and for Australian society: it reinforced Australia's growing independence from Britain, its accommodation as a small nation with Pax Americana and the realities of the Cold War, and its creation of postwar agendas of democracy and reconstruction. The reality of the occupation experience revealed both the ambition of and the limits to these emergent national agenda. The experience of ordinary Australian soldiers in Japan, moreover, and their responses to the realities of postwar Japanese life, foreshadowed longer-term shifts in Australian attitudes to Asia. As soon as Australian soldiers arrived on the ground in Japan, however, problems arose, often in the glare of the media. Amenities for the troops were at first inadequate, relations with US forces were sometimes strained, some troops behaved badly, and the official policy of 'non-fraternisation' with the Japanese population proved difficult to implement.
