FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Chrissa Pullicino August 4, 2010 Office: 845.266.4444, ext. 404 Omega’s 2010 Being Yoga Conference Retreat Brings 25+ Top Teachers to the Hudson Valley Senior Teachers Offer Classes to Preserve the Rich Tradition of Yoga RHINEBECK, NY –Today Omega Institute, one of the nation’s most trusted sources for yoga education, announced its annual Being Yoga Conference Retreat will be held on its Rhinebeck, New York campus, from August 20 through 22. The event offers an in-depth exploration of the many facets of yoga practice—from therapeutic to philosophical. “Since 1977, Omega has been a place where people from all walks of life come for lifelong learning, inspired living, and building community,” said Carla Goldstein, director of external affairs and the Women’s Institute at Omega. “During Being Yoga, beginner and experienced yoga practitioners gather in community to learn from leading teachers about the depth of this ancient tradition and the promising ways yoga can enhance their modern lifestyle,” concluded Goldstein. In addition to physical yoga practice, the Being Yoga Conference Retreat will offer classes on a wide range of topics, including health and wellness practices such as meditation, vegetarian cooking, and dance. Guests of Being Yoga will design their own schedule, choosing from more than 50 dynamic classes, to explore what it means to “live your yoga.” In addition to choosing classes, guests can spend time in quiet contemplation, make new friends during meals and community gatherings, relax with a session at the Omega Wellness Center, and explore the outdoors. The conference opens Friday evening August 20, at 7:30 p.m.

1042 N. Vista Street #8, West Hollywood, CA 90046 • 323.845.9781 [email protected] Chris Isaacson Presents in association with The VFC Project has announced #Hash(tag) America at Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood on Monday, November 18, at 8:30pm. #Hash(tag) America is a new theatrical musical, an urgent urban rock concert, and a soul stirring personal testimonial all rolled into one powerful explosion of sound, youth, diversity and truth. Set against original musical collaborations by Anthony Fedorov and other artists, this inspirational new musical explores true stories of social justice, gender identity, race, immigration, and economic inequalities within the fabric of the American experience. #Hash(tag) America began as a concept album entitled Calling On You (co-produced by Anthony Fedorov and Grammy Award-winner Jeeve Ducornet) from a successfully funded 2016 Kickstarter campaign. Los Angeles will be treated to a concert version of the show first performed to a rousing audience and critical response at New York’s The Green Room 42. — MORE— AT CATALINA JAZZ CLUB IN HOLLYWOOD [Page 2] Joining Fedorov (American Idol, Rent), Isa Briones (Star Trek: Picard, Hamilton), and Eden Espinosa (Falsettos, Wicked, Rent) will be Kyle Carter (The Lion King, In the Heights), Christina Sajous (SpongeBob SquarePants, Spiderman, American Idiot), and Heath Saunders (Alice By Heart, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert on FOX). Said Fedorov, “In the wake of our current political climate and as an immigrant myself, I felt like I had to do something. I started writing songs about racism, gun violence, and discrimination, and creating a show that will hopefully bring people together in these difficult times.

S*U*P*E*R CONSCIOUSNESS THROUGH MEDITATION DOUGLAS BAKER B.A. M.R.C.S. L.R.C.P. You ask, how can we know the Infinite? I answer, not by reason. It is the office of reason to distinguish and define. The Infinite, therefore, cannot be ranked among its objects. You can only apprehend the Infinite by a faculty superior to reason, by entering into a state in which you are your finite self no longer—in which the divine essence is communicated to you. This is ecstasy. It is the liberation of your mind from its finite consciousness. Like can only apprehend like; when you thus cease to be finite, you become one with the infinite. In the reduction of your soul to its simplest self, its divine essence, you realise this union, this identity. Plotinus: Letter to Flaccus CHAPTER 1 ANCIENT MYSTERIES Cosmic Consciousness The goal of all major esoteric traditions and of all world religions is entry into a higher kingdom of nature, into the realm of the gods. This kingdom is known as the Fifth Kingdom, and one’s awareness and experience of its world constitute what is referred to as the superconscious experience. It has been described by all those who have had this extraordinary glimpse of another world, in ecstatic terms, as a state of boundless being and bliss in which one’s individual consciousness merges with the universal consciousness, with the Godhead. It is a state of beingness and awareness that far surpasses one’s usual limited, narrow view of reality and transports one, for a brief moment, beyond the limits of time and space into another dimension.

  • Sikh Kirtan in the Diaspora: Identity, Innovation, and Revivalism
SIKH KIRTAN IN THE DIASPORA: IDENTITY, INNOVATION, AND REVIVALISM Navtej K. Purewal and Harjinder S. Lallie Introduction In 2003 the Dya Singh World Music Group, upon invitation from the Sikh Mayor of a medium-size California town with a considerable Sikh com- munity, arrived from Australia to run a Sikh youth camp for the com- munity in the area. For one week, Dya Singh and his group, comprised of both Sikhs and non-Sikhs, led the camp in teaching the children Gur- mukhi, gurbani kirtan, and translations in accessible language and story- telling styles to the children of the Guru Granth Sahib. The appealing world music style of kirtan was performed by Dya Singh’s group and the children participants on the final day of the camp in front of parents and the community, surprising many in how much the children had learnt in only one week. The immediate reaction from the Gurdwara Committee members ignited an opposition to what had gone on that week. As alleg- edly commented by one committee member: He turned Darbar Sahib into an entertainment center. He even made every- one laugh with some jokes! Religion is serious business . He is blasphe- mous! We should never pay him or invite him here again.1 Not only does Dya Singh’s group use the harmonium and tabla in its ren- ditions of shabad kirtan, but also the aboriginal didgeridoo, the European gypsy violin, the electric guitar and other instruments in their recordings and performance, stretching the imagination and boundaries of kirtan into the realm of world music.
