    BULLETIN OF THE ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF MALTA (2020) Vol. 11 : 103–117 DOI: 10.17387/BULLENTSOCMALTA.2020.18 The jumping plant-lice (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) of the Maltese Islands David MIFSUD* ABSTRACT. Twenty-one species of jumping plant-lice accommodated in five different families are here recorded from the Maltese Islands in an annotated checklist. The Aphalaridae is represented by four species (Agonoscena targionii (Lichtenstein), Blastopsylla occidentalis Taylor, Colposcenia aliena (Löw) and Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore), of which two (B. occidentalis and G. brimblecombei) are alien species originating from Australia. The Homotomidae is represented by Homotoma ficus (Linnaeus) and Macrohomotoma gladiata Kuwayama, the latter being an alien species originating from the Far East. The Liviidae is represented by Euphyllura olivina (Costa), Diaphorina lycii Loginova and Psyllopsis fraxinicola (Foerster). The Psyllidae is represented by Acizzia uncatoides (Ferris & Klyver), Cacopsylla myrthi (Puton) and C. pyri (Linnaeus), of which Acizzia uncatoides is an alien species originating from Australia. Finally, the most species-rich family is the Triozidae, represented by nine species (Bactericera albiventris (Foerster), B. crithmi (Löw), B. trigonica Hodkinson, Heterotrioza chenopodii (Reuter), Lauritrioza alacris (Flor), Trioza centranthi (Vallot), T. galii Foerster, T. kiefferi Giard and T. urticae (Linnaeus)). For each of the above species, collection data, distribution, host- plant data and other relevant information is provided. Lycium intricatum Boiss. is a new host-plant record for Diaphorina lycii, and Rhamnus lycioides subsp. oleoides (L.) Jahand. & Maire is a new host-plant record for Cacopsylla myrthi. A host- plant shift is documented for Bactericera crithmi, which alternates between Ferula melitensis Brullo et al. in winter and Crithmum maritimum L.

The pioneering encyclopaedias of Brisson (1756, 1760) and Buffon (1749-1767, ­1770-1783,­ and­ supplements)­ were­ the­ first­ to­ be­ solidly­ based­ on­ specimens­ examined­ by­ the­authors.­Collectors­in­the­Mascarenes­assembled­substantial­material­for­these­works,­but­ only­a­part­ended­up­in­the­published­encyclopaedias.­Part­of­this­was­due­to­loss­in­­transit,­ but­more­was­apparently­simply­overlooked­amidst­the­mass­of­material­the­writers­were­deal- ing with. As a result, several species collected &/or illustrated in the mid-18th century and apparent­ly­available­to­the­encyclopaedists­were­not­formally­described­for­several­decades­ or­ even­ a­ century­ later,­ notably­ Pseudobulweria aterrima, Coracina newtoni and Taphozous mauritianus from Réunion, Alectroenas nitidissima, Nesoenas mayeri, Mascarenotus sauzieri, Mormopterus acetabulosus and Phelsuma ornata from Mauritius, and Psittacula exsul and Cylindraspis peltastes from Rodrigues. The colonial collector-correspondents also sent much useful life history data that also did not make it into print at the time. TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000).

On our exploration of these idyllic isles, we will search for birds in the most spectacular scenery, be it rugged, forest-clad volcanic peaks, verdant forest patches or white, shell-laden beaches, fringed by warm water and teeming coral reefs. Island wildlife is generally susceptible to extinction and the islands of this area are no exception, with birds like the unfortunate Dodo serving as stark reminders of Mans’ heavy hand in these sensitive environments. RBL Indian Ocean Islands – Comoros Itinerary 2 The Comoros form an archipelago of volcanic islands off the central-east African coast. They are divided between the Union of the Comoros, a sovereign nation formed by the three islands of Grande Comoro, Anjoua & Mohéli, and the French overseas department of Mayotte. The vast evergreen forests that once dominated these islands have largely been removed leaving a few remaining pockets of pristine habitat boasting roughly 24 endemic species (and likely to reach a staggering 40 with further research). The addition of incredible scenery, a series of easily approachable active volcanoes and particularly friendly locals have made these islands an enticing and rewarding experience. We welcome you to join us as we island-hop with binoculars in hand on our quest to find the birds of these heavenly Indian Ocean isles. This tour allows a rare opportunity for any serious lister to connect with some of the rarest, most range-restricted, and/or endangered species on the planet. These include Karthala Scops Owl, Moheli Scops Owl, Anjouan Scops Owl (with all three being listed as Endangered by the IUCN), Mayotte Scops Owl, and many other fantastic species, a large number of which are endemic to the Comoros (with their respective subspecies being endemic to their specific island). Apart from the owls mentioned above, we will also target numerous other endemic birds of the Comoros/Mayotte, as well as some more widespread Malagasy/Indian Ocean Islands endemics. These include Comoros Green Pigeon, Comoros Blue Pigeon, several localized white-eyes, brush-warblers and drongos, the beautiful Comoros Fody and Red Fody, Malagasy Paradise Flycatcher, Lesser and Greater Vasa Parrots and lots of others (please see the details within the itinerary below). Crab-plover is another of our targets: although less range-restricted than the other species mentioned, it’s a charismatic, beautiful tropical wader/shorebird. Not only is the birding spectacular, but so too is the scenery and the variety of fauna and flora that one picks up along the way as a byproduct of the birding.

    Okinawa Custom tour 14th – 17th April, 2016 Tour leader: Charley Hesse Report and photos by Charley Hesse. (All photos were taken on this tour) The endangered endemic Okinawa Rail is a ‘must see’ on the island (Charley Hesse) This short custom extension was run prior to the Taiwan set departure tour. We just visited the main island of Okinawa where we concentrated on the forested north of the island with the local name ‘Yambaru’. Our main targets were the endemic Okinawa Woodpecker & Okinawa Rail, the latter only described as recently as 1981. We saw both easily, but we were also happy to see the endemic Ryukyu Robin & Ryukyu Minivet and several Ryukyu endemic subspecies, including Japanese & Ryukyu Scops-Owls, Whistling Green-Pigeon and Japanese Wood-Pigeon. We enjoyed fantastic birding and some great night excursions on which we saw several owl species, woodcock, the rare Ryukyu long-furred rat and beautiful Akamata snake. Our lodge was perfectly located in the native forests with all the targets on our doorstep. We were lucky to have the lodge to ourselves and the very friendly and helpful staff cooked us some wonderful Japanese food. After cleaning up in the north, we birded our way back to the capital Naha, hitting several areas of rice paddies and mudflats on the way back. We saw several interesting species such as Ruddy-breasted Crake, Yellow Bittern plus the endangered East Asian endemic Black-faced Spoonbill. Closed-mouth vocalizations generate resonance conditions that favor low-frequency sounds. By contrast, open-mouth vocalizations cover a wider frequency range. Here we describe closed-mouth vocalizations of birds from functional and morphological perspectives and assess the distribution of closed-mouth vocalizations in birds and related outgroups. Ancestral-state optimizations of body size and vocal behavior indicate that closed-mouth vocalizations are unlikely to be ancestral in birds and have evolved independently at least 16 times within Aves, predominantly in large-bodied lineages. Closed-mouth vocalizations are rare in the small-bodied passerines. In light of these results and body size trends in nonavian dinosaurs, we suggest that the capacity for closed-mouth vocalization was present in at least some extinct nonavian dinosaurs. As in birds, this behavior may have been limited to sexually selected vocal displays, and hence would have co-occurred with open-mouthed vocalizations.
