Understanding the Filipino Teens’ Consumption of Korean Popular Music and Videos, Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication. This thesis looked into the popularity of Korean popular (Kpop) music among the Filipino teens aged 15-19 years. The study used the combined assumptions of Straubhaar’s Cultural Proximity Theory, Ball-Rokeach and De Fleur’s Media Dependency Theory, and Blumler and Katz’s Uses and Gratifications Theory. The researcher conducted both traditional and online surveys among 270 Filipino teenage Kpop fans, and focus interviews to six (6) Filipino fans of the Korean groups Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, Shinee, SS501 and U-Kiss. The researcher determined the variables of consumption of Kpop content, cultural offerings present in Kpop content, and needs of the fans satisfied by Kpop content. The study found out that Filipino teens are highly exposed to Korean popular music, and consumed these media texts everyday by utilizing various media, most specifically the Internet. The Filipino fans are also attracted to the cultural offerings of Kpop content, especially the visual elements including the physical appearance of the artists (face, fashion, hairstyle) and visual aspects of the music videos (choreography, sets). It was found that consuming Kpop content gratified the entertainment need of the fans through its appealing visual elements and high-quality content (songs, choreography, and talented artists). vii ABSTRAK Alanzalon, S.M. Nagsagawa ang mananaliksik ng tradisyonal at online na sarbey sa 270 na kabataang Pilipino, at anim na pokus na panayam sa mga tagahanga ng mga sumusunod na grupong Koryano: Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, Shinee, SS501, at U-Kiss. Sinuri ng mananaliksik ang mga konsepto ng pagkonsumo, elementong kultural, at pangangailangan ng kabataang Pilipino. Natuklasan ng saliksik na mataas ang pagkakalantad ng mga kabataang Pilipino sa Kpop, at ginamit nila ang iba’t-ibang midya sa pagkonsumo, lalo na ang Internet. Nagustuhan nila ang Kpop dahil sa mga elementong kultural, higit lalo ang mga biswal na aspeto tulad ng panlabas na kaanyuan ng mga Koryanong artista (mukha, porma, ayos ng buhok) at ang kalidad ng mga music video (koryograpiya, set). Much like daily activities such as eating, walking, watching television, reading books and the like, fandom is a habitual activity for a fan. Sandvoss described fandom as the “regular, emotionally involved consumption of a given popular narrative or text”.1 There are emotions invested in the part of the fan such as adoration, idolization and other extreme feelings of fondness.

    The K-pop Wave: An Economic Analysis Patrick A. Messerlin1 Wonkyu Shin2 (new revision October 6, 2013) ABSTRACT This paper first shows the key role of the Korean entertainment firms in the K-pop wave: they have found the right niche in which to operate— the ‘dance-intensive’ segment—and worked out a very innovative mix of old and new technologies for developing the Korean comparative advantages in this segment. Secondly, the paper focuses on the most significant features of the Korean market which have contributed to the K-pop success in the world: the relative smallness of this market, its high level of competition, its lower prices than in any other large developed country, and its innovative ways to cope with intellectual property rights issues. Thirdly, the paper discusses the many ways the K-pop wave could ensure its sustainability, in particular by developing and channeling the huge pool of skills and resources of the current K- pop stars to new entertainment and art activities. Last but not least, the paper addresses the key issue of the ‘Koreanness’ of the K-pop wave: does K-pop send some deep messages from and about Korea to the world? It argues that it does. This research focused on how three agencies – the government, public broadcasting, and the culture industry – have negotiated their relationships in the process of globalization, and how the power dynamics of these three production sectors have been influenced by Korean society’s politics, economy, geography, and culture. The importance of the national media system was identified in the (re)production of the Korean Wave phenomenon by examining how public broadcasting-centered media ecology has control over the development of the popular music culture within Korean society. The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)’s weekly show, Music Bank, was the subject of analysis regarding changes in the culture of media production in the phase of globalization. In-depth interviews with media professionals and consumers who became involved in the show production were conducted in order to grasp the patterns that Korean television has generated in the global expansion of local cultural practices.

Geores Department of Geographical Sciences Education is viewed as central to improving the quality of life in developing countries. Indeed, two United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) respectively call for every child worldwide to receive at least a primary education and the elimination of the so-called “gender gap,” favoring boys, at all education levels. India has been striving to meet these MDGs, and has virtually eliminated the gender gap at the primary level. MDG statistics show, though, girls still trailing boys at the secondary level and a much wider tertiary-level gender gap. This research studies, in a spatial context, a purposefully selected group of students--young Indian women who have been challenged not only by gender but also in some additional social, economic, geographical, or other relevant way. Nonetheless, these students are educational success stories. The four study participants all have been schooled in India through at least the undergraduate level and are graduate students in the United States. The research investigates the specific social spaces, and the settings and processes found in or between these spaces, enabling the participants’ educations. The role of patriarchy is also explored. Conducted by an “outsider” American woman, the multiple case study is principally qualitative. Feminism, through a geographical lens, provides the theoretical framework. An extensive questionnaire and in-depth personal interviews have been utilized as the main participant information collection tools. Data collected have been coded into categories used to construct participant education narratives.

This new popular culture legitimatizes sex workers in a growing services industry and carries important de-stigmatizing messages about sex workers, who continue to be among the most stigmatized of women workers in the U.S.

YOUNG Under the direction of Amira Jarmakani ABSTRACT Using textual analysis of 49 young adult paranormal romances, I answer what is it about the cultural milieu that makes these novels popular right now? This thesis argues that the discourse which emerges from the novels reflects contemporary discourse and narrative about the girls and young women who read this genre and who place themselves within this discourse and narrative. The novels respond to this discourse by offering instances where the girls’ ideologies, built on the discourses taught to them, can be temporarily restored when the narrative proves false. These novels also undermine the confining discourse which the girls find themselves stuck in.
