An examination of the early Saint-Simonian journal, Le Producteur, however, reveals the articulation of an appeal to contemporary men of letters. A survey of the life and career of Hippolyte Carnot, a prominent Saint-Simonian man of letters, confirms and illustrates the nature of this appeal as it developed alongside Saint-Simonian ideology. Central to this appeal was the Saint-Simonians‘ attributing to the ―artist‖ the role of moral educator. -

My first encounter with the anonymous author of Considérations sur la France (anonymous because Maistre was in 1797 an official of the Sardinian government that had secretly signed a peace treaty with France) was some sixty years ago. Isaiah Berlin gave a lecture on his political thought which I attended as an undergraduate at the London School of Economics. It was a memorable experience to hear him describe how “Every new doctrine since the ages of faith is torn to shreds with ferocious skill and malice.” Berlin went on to acknowledge that Maistre’s “armoury of weapons against liberal and humanitarian doctrines is the most effective ever assembled,” who argued that attempts to reverse the French Revolution were “as if one had been invited to drain the Lake of Geneva by bottling its waters in a wine cellar.”[1] The remark that remained imprinted on my mind was Berlin’s emphasis upon Maistre’s apotheosis of the public executioner. Far from recoiling from the Jacobins’ resort to the guillotine to preserve their precarious hold on power, he asserted that no stable authority was possible in a wicked world without this God—sanctioned author of social order. The efficient, shameful secret of sovereignty, revealed by Thomas Hobbes, was the fear of death, so “all grandeur, all power, all subordination rests on the executioner; he is the horror and bond of human association. -

La classe ouvrière française n’avait pas alors la conscience politique permettant de récolter les fruits de sa victoire. Les premières grèves des canuts lyonnais de 1831 et 1834, suivies attentivement par les saint-simoniens, seront facilement écrasées. Les organisations démocrates révolutionnaires, comme la Charbonnerie avaient déployé leurs activités parmi les étudiants et dans une moindre mesure dans les couches plébéiennes, notamment chez les compagnons artisans. Ce n’est que durant la monarchie de Juillet que leurs membres commenceront à opposer clairement les intérêts du peuple à ceux de la bourgeoisie. (Abendroth, 2002). La monarchie de Juillet inaugure les luttes ouvrières à l’ère industrielle. De nombreuses couches populaires connaissent un sort peu enviable. L’industrialisation parvient à un stade tel que ses effets sociaux ravageurs, suscitent des agitations à répétition tant chez les prolétaires employés dans les nouvelles grandes fabriques industrielles que chez les ouvriers de métier et les compagnons traditionnels. -

The search for a libertarian communism: Daniel Guérin and the ‘synthesis’ of marxism and anarchism I have a horror of sects, of compartmentalisation, of people who are separated by virtually 1 nothing and who nevertheless face each other as if across an abyss. – Daniel Guérin Concerned that his reinterpretation of the French Revolution, La Lutte de classes sous la Première République (1946), had been misunderstood, Daniel Guérin wrote to his friend, the socialist Marceau Pivert in 1947 that the book was to be seen as ‘an introduction to a synthesis of anarchism and Marxism-Leninism I would like to write one day.’2 This paper aims to analyze exactly what Guérin meant by this ‘synthesis’, and how and why he came to be convinced of its necessity—for as Alex Callinicos has commented, ‘[g]enuinely innovative syntheses are rare and difficult to arrive at. In particular section 3 “To each according to his ability” is relevant. pp. 17-31: “The Difference Principle and the Distribution of Education and Resources versus the Redistribution of Revenues” This is a joint working paper with Caleb South with input from Marc Fleurbaey. It is an attempt to spell out a model inspired by Saint-Simon’s slogan “To each according to his ability”. It is very much early work. Three Slogans Marx writes in the Critique of the Gotha Program in 1875 that the Communist society can write the following slogan on its flag: “From each according to his abilities; To each according to his needs”. There are earlier versions of the same slogan in Louis Blanc in 1848, Étienne Cabet in 1845, and of the second half of the slogan in Constantin Pecqueur in 1842.1 Before that there were versions of a different slogan in the early socialist literature, viz. -

Anglo-American historians of my generation, when they looked to the political and social thought of the Third Republic, devoted most attention either to the founders of sociology, to existentialists, or to figures and movements of the radical Left and Right – extreme nationalists, anti-Semites, and proto-fascists on the right; terrorists, anarchists, syndicalists, and revolutionary socialists on the left. Julian Wright represents a new generation of English-language historians looking at figures and movements between the extremes. Wright’s first book was about the regionalist movement during the Belle Époque, and it focused on the intellectual and organizational leader of this movement, Jean Charles-Brun.[1] Wright situated Charles- Brun within a French political discourse that recommended regionalism, federalism, conciliation, and gradualist praxis, a discourse that extended back to the Old Regime, but grew in importance during the nineteenth century, as prominent intellectuals like Pierre-Joseph Proudhon criticized the state and recommended mutualist and federalist organizational forms. Charles-Brun, Wright insisted, should be placed at the center of the French political tradition that looked to regional bodies to make reforms, one that respected the cultures and particular needs of local populations. Wright took a generous view of what Anne-Marie Thiesse termed Charles-Brun’s “consensual nationalism,”[2] arguing that even when Charles-Brun served on the Commission des Provinces set up by Pétain, he was not a collaborator, but instead was pushing for moderate reforms, an agenda that avoided socio-political abstractions and focused on quotidian concerns. -

Surrealism and the Politics of Eros charts the chronological development of the French branch of the Surrealist movement through chapters devoted to a series of International Surrealist exhibitions from 1938 to 1965. While the history of French Surrealism before 1945 is well documented, the movement’s evolution from the outbreak of World War II to the 1960s remains understudied: thus Mahon’s intervention is an important contribution to the literature on the movement.[1] The book begins with an analysis of the 1938 International Exhibition at the Galerie Beaux-Arts in Paris; this chapter is followed by one on the dispersion of the French Surrealists during World War II and the re-establishment of the movement in New York City. In the opening chapter Mahon sets the 1938 Surrealist exhibition against the backdrop of the Nazi-sponsored “Degenerate Art” exhibit held in Munich the previous year, as well as the Surrealists’ support of the Spanish Republic, arguing that “the 1938 exhibition began the Surrealists’ radical appropriation of the public exhibition to expose repressed, national desires and fears through an uncanny manipulation of the gallery space” (p.19). In the next chapter Mahon discusses the interaction between André Breton, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, and American patrons such as Peggy Guggenheim, as well as two exhibitions that opened in New York in the fall of 1942: the “First Papers of Surrealism” organized by Breton and Duchamp, and the Surrealist display in Peggy Guggenheim’s “Art of This Century” gallery. -

Theoretical Construction of Our Subject of Study Resumen En este capítulo nos detendremos a delimitar teóricamente nuestro objeto de estudio, analizando las diversas corrientes que concurren y las numerosas fuentes —tanto teóricas como doctrinarias— que lo apoyan. Atenderemos especialmente la lectura que sobre la relación mercado-sociedad tuvieron los clásicos de la sociología. Nuestra hipótesis es que esta discusión fue central tanto en Marx, como en Weber, Tönnies, Durkheim y Parsons, en sus respectivos marcos teóricos, aunque con carencias notorias e importantes limitantes para dar cuenta cabal de los comportamientos socioeconómicos alternativos. Abstract In this chapter we theoretically define our subject of study, analyzing the diverse currents that converge along with the numerous sources, both technical and doctrinaire, that support it. We specifically focus on the interpretation of the relationship between markets and societies found in the sociology classics. Our hypothesis is that this discussion was central in Marx as well as Weber, Tönnies, Durkheim and Parsons, in their respective theoretical frameworks, although with notable and significant limitations for fully understanding alternative socioeconomic behaviors. Bertrand’s Voyage from Icarianism to Mormonism: French Romantic Socialism and Mormon Communalism in the Nineteenth Century A thesis presented to the Department of History The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Waltham, Massachusetts By Erik Freeman In 1851, a prominent French Romantic Socialist journalist, Louis A. Bertrand, converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormonism) in Paris. His conversion from French Icarianism--a form of Romantic Socialism--to Mormonism did not modify his previous religious or social beliefs. In fact, he considered Mormonism as the ideal version of a Romantic Socialist sect. This thesis looks at similarities and differences between Romantic Socialism and Mormonism throughout the mid-nineteenth century focusing specifically on Bertrand’s story. Furthermore, writings by other Romantic Socialists and Mormons on issues of community, religion, economics and revolution reaffirmed that Mormons paralleled these French socialists. Ultimately, iii Bertrand’s story among Romantic Socialists in France and Mormons in America, suggests that American Mormonism throughout
